just returned from 2 weeks at the Melini. Really enjoyed ourselves. We were a bit worried when we read some reviews but there is nothing wrong with the place. Ok its a bit old fashioned but it's clean and the staff are excellent. We were amazed at our room it was huge and had a massive sun terrace that led straight into the pool which is great when you've got kids who are forever in and out! It 's a 3 star hotel and you get what you pay for I couldn't believe some of the moaning I heard about it. However be prepared for a shock when you have to pay for the air con and the safety deposit boxes it cost us 166 euros for 2 weeks! Protarus itself is a little on the small side, if you're just looking for a beach holiday then it's fine as there isn't much else to do. Since Cyprus went with the Euro it has gone really expensive so you may need to take a bit more spending money.

Stayed at the Melini for 2 weeks in August this year. Apartments are dated but clean. We had a 3rd floor apartment overlooking the pool and the Med. Had problems with ants in the room on several occasions (keep all food in your fridge). Maid service most days but seemed to deteriorate as our holiday was nearing it's end. The owners do not let you eat your own food and drink by the pool which is really cheeky bearing in-mind it's self catering accommodation. A large glass of coke from the poolside bar was 3.20 Euros which is extortionate and explains why you're directed to their bar. Would recommend sending the kids over to Happy Days shop across the road for a 1.5 litre bottle for 1.65 Euros. Usual rush for sun beds every morning - I abided by the rules and waited until 8.00am (as you were supposed to do) most mornings but by then the best spots were usually taken. One side of the pool is completely shaded from mid day on and hence everybody wants the beds on the roadside which enjoy more sunshine. Apartments in good central location near to all restaurants. The pool and pool area are very small and the pool is actually square - very clever photo taken in brochure which makes it look a completely different shape. Beach completely overrun by Greek Cypriots who take their holidays in early August so plenty of dodging bats and balls if you fancy a wander along the coastline. Second time for us in Cyprus but this place was not up to standards we had last year in Nissi Bay. Plumbing is so dated that you still can not flush loo paper which is not too pleasant when your maid goes AWOL for 3 days. Dont worry about building work as we didnt hear a thing. The hotel in my opinion is badly designed with pool on the roadside - we had strangers coming in for a drink and then using the pool. Also youngsters coming home from drunken sojourns were using pool in the early hours of the morning. This may explain why my 2 kids (and many others) got ear infections. We love Cyprus but would not stay at Melini again.

We stayed at the Melini for 2 weeks and despite some of the reports we had read
found it to be excellent,
the pool was more than adequate,
the island affair restaurant served up excellent food time after time although just a little expensive,
the rooms are quite basic but we were very lucky to get a ground floor apartment with a huge terrace area,
Air conditioning we found to be over priced as you have a unit in each room so unfortunately have to pay twice,
cleaning was done 5 times a week with fresh sheets and towels everytime,
all in all very good value,
the resort of protaras i would say is comfortable for families but could do with a little more for the kids of an evening,
If you are going as a family avoid ayia napa it as become totally unsuitable for families there are huge groups of clubbers around day & night and the place is now looking tatty
and there is a menacing atmosphere about the place
which is a shame as we went there a few years ago and thought it was great.

Don't worry about reviews about this hotel, we have just come back from a weeks holiday staying at the Melini and it was fine. There is some building working going on over the road but to be honest they've done most of the structural work and you can hardley hear any noise. If you're worried which i was we found that if you walk over the street and down to the beach you can use the sun loungers from the 1st hotel as they don't mind you being there, we also used there facilities too i.e the pool, bar, toilets etc and its a really nice hotel.
Back to the Melini, its very clean and most of staff are English which is funny but good as they know what you're asking for. The rooms are HUGE biggest rooms we've stayed in and ours had 2 bathrooms great for a couple! Only down fall was the air con, wasn't that cool and you have to pay roughly 35 euros for a week. The air con can only be used in one room at a time as it has lounge/kitchen & bedroom. Slightly old fashioned but clean, any problems you have they will fix asap. Food in restuarant was reasonable in island Affair which is next to pool and great toasties in the day at cheap price. All in all i would go back there for a cheap holiday, apartments were great don't worry when you read these terrible reports.

Melini was amazing- it a perfect location- slap bang in the middle of the main strip but set back slightly so wasn't noisy. I was a bit worried about the building work that was mentioned in other reviews, but that has all finished now and there is no noise from it. The staff were friendly enough and the rooms were cleaned everyday but one, with clean towels and linen each day. the only downside was paying 5 euros a day for air con.
The pool was beautiful and there were a lot of sun beds- that were free. You don't need to rush down in the morning to get one!
Just opposite the hotel is the slip road down towards the beautiful beach and our end was definitely the best part. sunbeds were 2 euros a day. There are also a lot of water sports but they dont get in the way of swimmers. The water was clean and you can see little fishes.
Cyprus was brilliant- would definitely go back, and its not too English- you can get lots of traditional meals and everyone is very welcoming. Prices are the same as England but thats because they have just changed to Euros.
would recommend the Ghetto bar for cocktails before 10pm and also the Love boat on Tues or Sat where my boyfriend got hypnotized and it was very funny.
Highly recommended!!

Me and my boyfriend had a lovel 2 week holiday in protaras. Melini apartments were basic and clean, was dissapointed that we had to pay 75 euros for air con and 30-40 euros for a deposit box when we arrived.
We were told that since cyprus changed to the euro in jan 2008 the prices havent settled yet and you will probably find you are paying the same price for a meal as you would in england!
A shop opposite "happy days" we used most days to by food, drink etc. And was resonably priced.
The apartments location was brilliant, it is on the main strip and you will find both restaurants and bars, whether you turn left or right out of the apartments.
would definately recomend the famagusta trip, and the waterpark in ayia napa was a good day out. (you can get the trip cheaper booking through Mr john the taxi transfer)
2 brilliant beaches down the road opposite the apartments, turn right at the bottom to head for fig tree bay beach which is beautiful.
would definately go back to protaras but probably stay half board as of the costs!

Just got back from two weeks at the melini. The hotel was in the centre of the strip which was perfect but the hotel itself leaves alot to be desired. A 3star hotel it isnt. It was very basic and generally dirty. Our room was supposed to have a double bed but just had two singles pushed together! The bedroom and the bathroom doors didnt lock which was fine until some man entered the apartment claiming something was wrong with the fridge! The balcony doors were held together by dodgy locks too! The apartment was abit of a miss match and a little out dated. Id advise people to bring there own towels as the ones supplied are like cheese graters and very worn. The staff are very friendly and helpful. I do advice paying the £5 for aircon each night, the weather we just had out there was 42. The pool was the best bit about the hotel and the bar and restaurant that are all part of the complex were also fab. Over all not a bad place to stay but there are certainly better places to stay.

We have just returned from the Melini apartments. After reading the reviews we were a bit worried but they turned out to be great.
Yes they are not the most up to date however... very clean, spacious, close to resort and staff helpful if needed.
We had a 2 bedroom apartment No.309 which was huge. On the balcony you could have held a party it was so big. It also had the fire escape (they were proper stairs), with 2 small children I wouldn't have left them out on their own on any balcony so it was not a concern.
There was a bar attached that was noisy but we were out most nights and those that we were in the kids slept through it- and it was good for us to sit outside and listen with a G&T in hand!
We would definitely return to the apartments.
Hope this helps.

Stayed in Melini apartments for a week. First impressions in need of improvements, the cot put in our room for our 1 year old child was appalling, mould on mattress stains of vomit on the cot itself.
In complaining was given replacement that as twice as bad. Contacted rep then was given something more acceptable. My advices don’t stay in here with children.

Just returned from one week, late deal, and holiday to Melini Apartments, Cyprus. Arrived in early hours of morning but checked in quickly and efficiently. Requested air-conditioning and safety deposit box. Was given keys for these and advised to pay in morning.
First impression was room was very basic but clean. Appeared very old fashioned but spacious even with sofa bed turned down in lounge area for our daughter.
Safety deposit box found, eventually, at top of kitchen cupboard!
You require 2 units for air-conditioning to cool both bedroom and lounge area-deposit of £5 and £3 daily per unit(Cypriot money).
Apartments are very central within Protarus. Lots of lovely restaurants, bars, supermarkets, shops for souvenirs and banks. Beach was directly across from Melini and sun beds available, paying £1.25 per bed and £1.25 for parasol which was essential due to intense heat! Sea lovely and clean but rocky in places with lots of seaweed!
Poolside very busy at apartments but plenty sun loungers-No parasols available though. Lovely poolside bar and restaurant which provided drinks and food at really good prices.
Favourite bar/diner nearby was 'Friends' which played videos continually-a must for your teenage children and I must admit I really enjoyed them myself! Staff must know shows word for word though!!
Staff in Melini apartments were lovely, helpful and helped make this a wonderful, relaxing holiday. Rooms cleaned 6xweekly and towels changed each time. Beds changed regularly.
A wonderful holiday in Cyprus enjoyed by us all.

We have just arrived home after two weeks at the Melini. The rooms are clean and spacious, cleaned regularly. The staff are all polite and friendly and can't do enough for you. If you have a problem it's dealt with straight away.
The location is excellent, right on the main strip. There is no real problem with noise, although you do hear everything from Rockerfellas (part of the hotel) but usually only until midnight. Sleep is easy but you do need the air con.
The food is very nice in the restaurant, The Island Affair but the girls, Christina, Maria and Silvana are absolutely lovely people. I can honestly say that I have never met such lovely people on holiday. These three ladies make the Melini a great place to stay. They are polite, friendly and very helpful. They work very hard to ensure good customer service. We tried other restaurants but Island Affair is one of the nicest! Also it's only a short walk to the lovely fig tree bay, which is a gorgeous beach!
We will definitely be going back. Thank you, Christina, Maria and Silvana and all the staff.

Just returned from a last minute booking staying at the Melini apartments.
We had read other comments about the accommodation being basic so didn't expect much, but was pleasantly surprised to find a good standard although the furniture was dated, it was comfortable and clean.
We have stayed in 4* accommodation in Cyprus before and this is not 'A' class as stated in their official rating, but 3 star is fitting. The pool area is lovely but can become crowded at peak season.
You have to get up early (around 9 am) to get your preferred sunbed. You can also sit around the pool area at night, it's a nice place to have a drink as it's lit up and the sound of the waterfalls in the background.
Towards the end of the two weeks our group of 7 preferred to sit here after two weeks of karaoke and Elvis impersonators. The staff at the Melini are friendly and helpful.
We ate out each night at different restaurants and never had one bad meal. The food was excellent, the best restaurants were 'The Corner Restaurant' (everything on the menu was fabulous) and 'Nicholas' (recommend the Meze here) and 'Da Sonia' (recommend the steaks cooked expertly by Costas).
We went to Romeos for the Greek night which was OK if you want to get a taste of the Greek culture with live Greek music, plate smashing and dancing, although it was a little expensive at £12 for the 3 course set menu which we discovered was usually only £6 so you are paying £6 for the entertainment (reduced prices for children) but we did enjoy the evening.
The beaches are fabulous, Fig Tree Bay was packed as it was the school holidays but it is worth a visit and you can swim to a small nearby island, take your snorkel to view the fish.
If you have small children be careful as there are so many people you can easily lose them and my 7 year old found it difficult to find her way back to our sunbeds. We preferred the other beach which you turn left from the apartments and a few minutes’ walk away as it was quieter, with more watersports and 'Flamingos’ restaurant is a good place for lunch or breakfast right on the beach. Just be careful there are a few rocks at the water’s edge in places.
The night life was a bit of the same thing in each bar, karaoke, the same singers (various different Elvis impersonators, Michael Jackson etc), hard to find anything 'traditionally Greek' really. We visited Cyprus 5 years ago and found that many of the waiters are now Eastern European with varying degrees of fluency in English with only a few restaurants with Greek staff that all seemed to speak excellent English.
Happy Days supermarket was the cheapest, it's only small but stocks most things you will need. If you are planning to bring some booze home, the shop near Eden Square has the best prices.
We visited the 'Dancing Water Show' near McDonalds which we would recommend, the children loved it. Also the water park in Ayia Napa is worth a visit, we went in July and by lunchtime the ground was too hot to walk on in places, so you will need to take flip flops and leave them at the bottom of each slide.
We crossed the border into Northern Cyprus which was interesting, looked poorer than the southern side, but had lovely beaches.
We would return to the Melini as its location is ideal, right in the middle of the strip - although we did notice building work in front of our apartment which may block the sea view if it continues to rise, which would be a shame.

Arrived at hotel in the early hours and we were in our room within 5 mins.
I agree the hotel decor is slightly old fashioned but was always very clean and is very comfortable.
Rooms were massive a double balcony looked out on to pool. (All rooms do) they had everything you need in them even though we eat out every night.
The location of this hotel is brilliant you are right on the main strip and have everything you need within a 2 min walk. There is a shop/mini market opposite which has everything you might need and was 1 of the cheapest in the resort.
There is a cash machine next door to this should you need it. The beach is also a 2 min walk and fig tree bay which is beautiful is about 5 mins.
There is a massive choice of restaurants in the resort and I can’t mention them all but make sure you try a Meze we liked it so much we had 2 during our week stay.
I found Rockefeller bar which is the hotel bar 1 of the best great staff. Cheap and loads to do and going on. Also try the guetto bar which between 6-9 all cocktails were £1.
All in all a great hotel resort and holiday and would recommend to anyone.
