" Absolute Shambles "

The embarkation process was an absolute shambles at Fort Lauderdale. Carnival were certainly not properly prepared to take on over 3,000 passengers and it showed. They had only one point to embark and two luggage scanning machines. Not enough. We waited 2.5 hours in the queue, only to be asked to leave the building because of a security problem. It was never explained what the problem was and no apology was ever received as to the treatment of all the passengers who were not able to board the ship. We spent 6 hours in a terminal building, away from the ship "for our own safety" and were not allowed on board by the local sheriff and various security agencies. We did not have anything to eat or drink for at least 5 hours after our arrival at port and indeed had not eaten since breakfast. One passenger collapsed and Carnival did not seem to take into account that a lot of infirm or diabetic passengers were being denied basic water, food, light and air (as we were locked in). It seemed that although the passengers were in some danger from an unknown source, the terminal staff were still permitted to stand outside the building keeping watch on any passengers who might escape.
Eventually we boarded ship over 8 hours after arriving at the cruise terminal, absolutely exhausted and thoroughly fed up.
Shame on you Carnival for your treatment of passengers and lack of Crisis Management for any possible security breaches. We still don't know what caused the alert, as Carnival felt it best not to mention it again even after we had boarded.

We were on board Carnival Splendor for the inaugural to Amsterdam departing on 10th July 2008. We chose to book the cheapest of the cheap cabins on deck 1 as this was just to be a cheap weekend away and were pleasantly surprised to find that we had been upgraded to deck 8. The inside cabin was more spacious than we have had before on other ships and the shower room a good size. The ship was fantastic, we found the entertainment in the bars excellent, there were numerous bars and lounges with entertainment in the evenings. We did not go to any shows in the theatre but were told they were very good. We were in the Black Pearl restaurant for the early sitting which wasnt what we had booked, however the food was good and waiters very nice and friendly. The pool areas were lovely but were not in much use as the weather was not that good. This was our first cuise with Carnival, we have mainly travelled with Royal Caribbean, but have also been on Princess, Disney, Celebrity and NCL. We will try Carnival again with the right deal.
