We are an English couple in our late 50's and have just had a wonderful holiday, it was our first time in Turkey ( July 2008).
As we only had a week we wanted to make the best of it. We flew from a local airport mid-week to Dalayan on a cheap late deal flight and transfered to Marmaris which was part of the package. After a quick trip around Marmaris (worth seeing) we took a Dolmus bus to the main Bus Station and found another bus to Akyaka ,we knew immediately on entering the small resort that we wanted to stay.
There is no hassle here, no hard sell or bingo numbers or loud disco that you can't avoid, and a wonderful shallow soft sandy beach with a mountain backdrop (that was what we wanted) .
Most of the holiday makers here are Turkish families on holiday and they expect to be treated well and with respect. It is very impressive, and I wish we could be the same , after a day on the wonderful beach, we decided to stay.
We found accommodation at the www.azmakapart.com which was excellent, and could not have been better, not too expensive, the family running it were really caring, there were Turkish families staying here and that seemed to me to be a good indication that it would be good, I think they are all self catering, and new last year, the gardens well cared for and the place spotless, really excellent, and we absolutely loved it and soon began to relax.
The local restaurants are very reasonable and the seasonal food is obviously cooked with care and pride. I am vegetarian and found many choices as produce is so varied, brilliant vegetable casseroles , aubergine fritters, rissottos. With a variety of shops to get presents from there is something for everyone, jewelry, leather bags, rugs, sweets.
10 of the best of our holiday in random order, hope to return next year as we didn't stay long enough but I would defiantly recommend it.
1.Turkish people are very hospitable and proud of their country and treat you as a welcome guest.
2.www.azmakapart.com which we were very pleased to find, makes a huge difference to feel safe, secure and welcome.
3. The stunning mountains and unspoilt shallow beach with lifeguards 9 - 6, soft sand and sun, with a cooling breeze, beach showers etc. Clean mountain air.
4.Stars at night , wonderful clear skies, bats and swallows, butterflies, walking, conservation area for wild life, building restrictions.
5.Turkish breakfasts with cheeses and honey , the savory scrambled eggs ,brilliant,
6.Fresh fish in batter, with lettuce and onion in crusty bread, ( 4 Lira) excellent fast fresh food on top deck of river boat, good views.
7.River trips, and crystal clear water, the laid back attitude.
8. Beer in chilled glasses on the beach, good food at the local beach restaurants, fresh squeezed orange juice.
9.The bread in Akyaka is the best we have ever tasted anywhere.
10.Dolmus buses good value and frequent to local towns, markets have a brilliant range of fresh fruit and vegetables, dried produce, aubergines, mushrooms, chilies, I could go on!
