The Bon Port hotel enjoys a beautiful, if somewhat remote, location overlooking several bays in St Martins, Guernsey. We stayed there for a few days at the end of March. It was very early in the season (indeed, on our first night we were the only guests in the hotel!) and some renovation work was still going on. This did not spoil our enjoyment of our visit, however.
On our mid-morning arrival we were given a warm welcome by Sue, who I think is one of the owners of the hotel. Our room wasn't ready, so although the kitchen was officially closed, she offered us a late breakfast while we waited. After our 3 a.m. start we were very grateful for this (though we were charged extra for it, of course!).
Our room at the Bon Port was comfortable and nicely furnished. It wasn't the biggest hotel room we'd ever stayed in, but there was plenty of cupboard and wardrobe space, which is always a plus. One point to note, if you're going at the start or the end of the season, is that the hotel doesn't appear to have central heating. There was an electric fire in the main part of the room, which was welcome, but not so much as a heated towel rail in the bathroom, so in the mornings especially it could be a bit nippy. I don't suppose this will be a problem if you go in the summer, of course.
The food was the big plus of the Bon Port, and it exceeded our expectations. In the morning you can have a massive full English breakfast if you like, or a choice of fish (including haddock, kippers and smoked salmon with scrambled egg), or just a 'continental' breakfast with croissants, ham and cheese. If you go half-board (as most people do) you can choose from the 'gourmand's menu' in the evening, which has a range of starters, main courses and desserts. Coffee is also included. For under £25 a head, we thought this was good value, and the food itself was uniformly delicious.
The location, and especially the views, are another big plus for the hotel. This is one place it is definitely worth paying the extra for the sea view! You are also virtually on the cliff path, and there are some beautiful walks both ways along the island's coastline. Note that the nearest bus stop is a good 20 minutes' walk away, however, down picturesque but narrow lanes. It's interesting to see what happens when two vehicles going in opposite directions meet on one of these (though we can understand that some drivers find this off-putting, especially when it happens at night).
As mentioned, we went early in the season, and a number of new staff seemed to be starting at the same time. Perhaps as a result of this, on occasion the service could be a little amateurish, but any mistakes or misunderstandings were quickly sorted out with good humour. Overall, with very few reservations, we would recommend the Bon Port as an excellent place to stay on the lovely island of Guernsey.

The self catering accommodation is dated and the furniture very substandard. The settees are old, uncomfortable and only a few inches off the floor making them difficult to get out of. The kitchenette was filthy and the cooker needed repairing. The advertised heated swimming pool was unheated, covered and contained detritus. Food elsewhere was much cheaper. All in all, expensive (£930 for 1 week) and sub-standard with no apologies from owners or staff.
