Great week's walking
8 / 10
Sep 2011, Mike

Our second visit to these cottages. Lovely location, especially if you like walking. Four of us stayed in Chestnut Cottage which was a little basic but clean and very comfortable.Bedrooms a good size. Heating fine (if anything, too warm)and the swimming pool was superb after a day's walk.
Sarah was a perfect host, explaining things on arrival but ensuring she was available in the background in the event of problems.
Overall, Chestnut Cottage was excellent value for money. We have every intention of returning.

Great Location, For Walkers...
5 / 10
May 2011, 6876

We have just returned from a week at Chestnut Cottage at Twitchell Farm. The location is fabulous for walking, the views stunning.
Slight problem with the heating in the cottage, too cold to begin with then once the heating sorted it got too hot! We could adjust the radiators but did not seem to get the right level.
Sarah was kind enough to offer us use of WiFi in her home as we could not connect in the cottage, we appreciated the offer but did not feel comfortable in taking it up - maybe there is a section of the pool area that guests could use if the connection worked in there??
A few things would have made a higher rating:
1. An instuction/cottage file that gave all information on appliances - I had to search for the microwave one and would have been great to go to one place
2. Up to date leaflets on what's where/pubs to visit etc - the ones in the cottage dated back to 2003 (luckily we knew the area fairly well)
3. Beds! The double was a short one, I am 5 foot 4 and my feet touched the end of the bed.
4. If freeview could be added to the 4 channels on offer, that would have been a nice bonus. We were extremely lucky with the weather and we were out most of the time.

Management response from Sarah, Owner 14 May 2011

I am really sorry you had these problems I know we discussed the heating which just needed the thermostats turning up on each radiator, they had been turned down as it had been so warm. Maybe it was the flow valve at the other end of the radiator that needed adjusting sorry I would have sorted this if you had mentioned it. I can not get WiFi in any of the cottages as there is no other phone lines and the signal is too week as you know we live in a remote area and not in the village (which is the beauty of the location for a holiday cottage) The information packs are full of old and new information people like to leaf through it all. (So they tell me) The microwave is standard and I thought leaving the instructions in the cupboard above it would help more than anywhere else. The double bed is a standard size if it was smaller my double sheets would not fit they would be too long!! Yes I will have free view when it comes digital in this area in September but until then it is not possible really sorry. I hope my reply answers all the questions These customers left saying that they had really enjoyed their stay with us.

Spring Holiday
8 / 10
Apr 2011, jen

We have just stayed in one of the cottages on the Farm, we were made very welcome by the owner, Sarah was helpful but not intrusive. The pool was enjoyed by evereyone who used it, they commented on the funny taste, but reading about the different chemical used that explains this, and you are not supposed to drink it anyway. The view from the farm yard was lovely, and yes the walk to and from the village is steep but a quick look at a map before we arrived meant that this was no surprise. We all really enjoyed our holiday it was a lovely place to be based, comfortable, and a lovely contrast frombeing in the middle of a city.
I would recommend the cottages as a base to explore this area. Good value for money especially if you are a big group.

Brilliant relaxing week

A fantastic week in a wonderful location with beautiful views and great hosts. So peaceful and very relaxing.
Twitchill Farm is a perfect family holiday let with a secure garden, large tables inside and out, TV and DVD for those 'inevitable' moments and comfy good sized rooms. Cottage came with travel cots and high chairs which was a great help and having a swimming pool next door was fantastic.
Brilliant walking, the hill the farm is on makes for a great afternoon stroll with kids and within 5-10 minutes drive you have half a dozen wonderful peaks, more great pubs than you can use and several underground caverns to tour.
Highly recommended.

Excellent family fun

Apr 2011, Ruth

We have just returned from a fantastic break at Twitchill Farm. It was wonderful to stay on a working farm. Trying to find somewhere which accommodated 6 adults and 4 under 3s at a reasonable price was a challenge and Twitchill filled the spot excellently.
We loved the ability to swim every morning and our 2 year old gained amazing confidence from being able to swim in 'her own pool'!
Noticing the other comments on here, can I say that the cottage was clean and well equiped. We found it perfectly spacious enough for our group. We did pay for electricity on top of our accommodation, but that is made clear on the paperwork sent out prior to booking, and it wsa only £22 for the week. There are a number of cats - we found this fun, not a problem. There is a steep hill, but the cottages are in the peak district... Sarah was very helpful and even provided extra travel cots and highchairs for us.
All in all, we had a wonderful stay. Thank you.

A let down

We had booked the 2 connecting cottages (8+8)over the Near Year .10/11.On arrival the owner informed us that the swimming pool was ;not in use; a burst pipe hot water heating pipe ,apparently .This was 31/12/10 but not to worrying it would be repaired on the 03/01/11 .It was not! !We only booked the cottages because of the swimming facilities and paid the extra price for that facility. We were not happy but the owner made it clear --it was in the T&C AND WE HAD ALREADY PAID. Time to count to ten. The swimming pool was never repaired for the duration of our stay .In we all came home 2 days early
Furniture with the two cottages were the same, seating very poor but they were clean.
The location was excellent for walking
Apparently the electricity was not included--OK.
The central heating was controlled by the owner--min. setting. But she was good enough to place electrical oil heaters in the cottages for our use. And for us to pay for--good move. Get the guest pay to be warm even when we paid for central heating
Location great
Would i recommend a stay
No ,no
Hospitality not the owner’s best attribute

I feel upset at this comment and feel I need to explain. I tried my best to resolve the swimming pool problem the pool was working but the heating was down slightly I closed it as I felt it would be too cold for people to use it. It had failed New Years Eve and I struggled to get a plumber out there and then we had outside temptures of minus 15 degrees and it had struggled to keep up. I explained this to them but they went off alarming at me. It was out of my hands. The children in the end did use the swimming pool at the cooler temperature most of there stay and I had asked them if it was ok and they said yes. By the second day of their stay the temperature was coming back up so I didn’t see the problem but it obviously was! As far as the heating it is included in the price and yes I did turn it down slightly as they were leaving all the doors and windows open. The electric heaters were put in, as it had been so cold just as an extra back up. They did not pay for there electric and I did not ask for any as a compensation for the swimming pool not up to scratch. I am really sorry that these customers did not enjoy their stay. The cottages are the same as they are usually sold separately.

We were lucky to find this cottage at short notice and I'm so glad we did. We were given a very warm welcome and loads of info on all the different walks in the area, the cottage was nicely done out and the scenery is fantastic - thankyou so much, we will definitely be coming back!

Really disappointing

Really disappointed with our recent stay at these cottages. The downstairs accommodation was extremely cramped and grubby with many appliances not working correctly. The outdoor decking was a mess and the pool area was dirty and looked unfinished and the pool so over-chlorinated it was unpleasant to use. The owners were really rude and there is a herd of cats (we counted 13!) living right on the doorstep. On arrival we fould the bins hadn't been empted and there were dirty coffee cups left lying around presumably from the previous guests. It is only a mile to Hope but it's a very steep uphill mile on the return leg. On the plus side the cottage was well-equipped and two of the four bedrooms were nice and the walks are fabulous (shame there are no views from the cottage though).

Management response from Sarah Atkin, owner 13 May 2010

I am really sorry that you did not enjoy your holiday with us I have been running Twitchill Farm Cottages for 22 years now and this makes me very upset that you never said anything whilst you were here. I am very particular about the cleanliness of the cottages I have only recently had the decking put down so I would presume there were a few leaves on it. The cottage size is not large as they are only "cottages" but surfiffant for 8 people in each. The pool is not on clorine it is on baquacil so does not effect the eyes but yes tastes funny but you are not surpose to drink it!! It is cleaned on a regular basis as it has to be for safety reasons. I have in the last month had the cottages painted and new kitchens. If any electrical equipment was not working you should have told me and I could have replaced it straight away. As for the cats I have a few farm cats The lane is steep it takes 10 mins to walk down and 20 mins back up I can not alter that sorry. To end this I really hope that anyone reading this is not put off as it is a beautiful place and great walking country.

Accommodation was a bit shabby and a bit dirty, with noise from neighbouring visitors through the walls.
Fantastic location, on a busy and popular walkers route to Win Hill, but not a very welcoming reception from owners.
Charge for electricity made at end of week. Small, highly chlorinated pool available.

Management response from sarah, owner 28 Jul 2010

The cottages since this visit have been refurbished with new carpets and kitchens. The walls are very thick I had a group in last week with a musically instrument and no one heard any noise. The pool is not chlorine? Electric is meter read at a standard rate and is only for lights and small items so never very much it is just to detour customers leaving lights on etc, It is in all the literature before arrival. (No surprises) Not had a complaint before re my personality sorry if I seemed rude. It is in my interest to be pleasent to my customers not rude.
