I booked direct with Herr Moedlinger, via phone/email, to join my 6 friends (they were already booked via Neilsson, but Neilsson had no more rooms in their allocation) at 2 weeks' notice. It's a traditional Tirolean style family-owned/run hotel. Rooms were fairly spacious,... more

Hotel Modlinger was an excellent base for our Ski trip. The short walk to the village centre and ski lifts was just enough for me to stretch my long legs before a hard day on the piste. Mr Modlinger is the proprietor of this fine establishment and he is a true gentleman... more

We stayed at Moedlinger early Jan 2007 and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. The hotel is very clean and has a good 3 star feel to it (we've been to some horrible supposedly 3 star hotels before!). Rooms - We had the smaller rooms in the hotel but they were still very spacious.... more

What a beautiful hotel! Family run, relaxed, comfortable, good food - healthy diet. The open fire in the bar, the bar staff attitude and the sofas make for a great place to spend the evenings. The bar can get quite busy and lively but is spacious enough to cope well - sleep... more

Definitely more positives than negatives.
My wife and I stayed 2 weeks in this hotel and we both enjoyed our time here, both in the hotel and the resort. Hotel is located 5 minutes outside the village centre, it is smart and kept clean throughout, bedrooms are a good size with usual amenities for Austria. Towels changed daily, bed linen weekly. Breakfast is the usual continental standard with bread rolls, cheese, sausage etc + cereals, toast and sometimes croissants. Evening meal has choice of main meal + soup, salad bar and dessert and was generally a good standard and enough for most appetites. Tendency to use a little too much salt in cooking, but otherwise no complaints. Free packed lunch and free after dinner coffee saves on the budget too. Owner and his wife are very friendly, as was Katya, the very nice waitress from St. Petersburg, all of whom speak very good english. Soll and the surrounding area had plenty of lifts to take you to the top of the mountains that give breathtaking views of the alps and of the local villages almost 2000 metres below - a weekly pass costs around 42 Euros and is well worth the investment. The free "Kaiserjet" bus service runs 4 or 5 times a day to the adjacent villages of Going, Ellmau and Scheffau, another good saving. Air Europa flight from Bristol could be a lot better, Spanish plane with spanish crew, service below average in my experience, but otherwise a very enjoyable holiday hotel and location. If considering Soll, I would definitely recommend this hotel which is at the upper end of the 3 star rating in our opinion.
fantastic modlinger
What fantastic hotel. Rooms large and spotless. Food excellent and plentiful. Location perfect and quiet with outstanding views. Staff couldn't be more friendly and helpful. Can't wait to return next year. Thank you Modlinger.
Nice place....but don't complain
Just returned from a week at the Modlinger - a strange experience of opposing standards - what appears to be a quality hotel let down by poor customer service. General - a comfortable hotel with good quality furnishing and decor. It is located on the outskirts of a relaxing tirolean village with amenities that were sufficient for most needs. The village centre is only 5 minutes stroll down a slight hill and offers all the usual services (supermarket, tourist info, banks, bars and eateries, etc). Bedrooms - Our room was reasonably furnished with comfortable beds and en suite bathroom - the only issue here was the time it took for hot water to arrive out of the hot tap (about a 2-3 minute wait in most cases) which seemed to be a common gripe amongst our fellow holidaymakers. Similarly problems with the room safe and absence of welcome information led to concerns (which again were experienced by others during our stay) Dining - The hotel menu is somwhat limited and not very adventurous but all the meals were of a reasonable standard and wholesome. Table service was fairly speedy, but being first in did not mean you would be first out, there appeared to be no logic to the order of serving each table. However one good feature is the facility to select items for a packed lunch from the breakfast buffet selection - we found this particularly useful compared to the usual 'standard' lunchpack offered by other hotels. This seemed to be a particularly positive aspect amongst out fellow stayers also. Oddities - whilst it is right to have issues resolved by hotel management when the need arises, be warned to expect inadequate customer service when you raise issues with the manager here. At the best of times he is offhand or even ignorant - we witnessed him turn his back and walk away from one person making a complaint. Amusingly, not long after our arrival, one gripe we made about the absence of staffing in the reception resulted in him suggesting we consider moving to another hotel if we wanted a higher standard of service ! Whilst this was quite unsettling at the time as it was not the sort of welcome we expected, he was later apologetic and made efforts to be polite and helpful thereafter. If you like a drink - go to another hotel/bar in the village. The Modlinger has a large bar in the main lounge/reception area - but it was never open/staffed during our stay ! Summary - On the whole we would recommend the hotel for a short break; it's probably better in the winter as we suspect that the management are operating on limited resources during the summer.
Great hotel
Stayed here for a week in July 2008 as part of an Inghams Lakes & Mountains holiday. This hotel was above average in my opinion, the room was clean and the standard of the hotel was good. The food was excellent in my opinion, as I am very fussy about what I eat, but I found that I could eat almost everything they gave me. Breakfast was a bit "monotanous" after a couple of days, but they let you make up a packed lunch from the breakfast buffet each day - which was quite good. The service in the restaurant at dinner was a bit slow at times, but it got better towards the end of the week. I would recommend this hotel and I would probably stay there again if I was in the area.
Great little place
I forgot to write a review about the Modlinger after our stay last year, but as I've just recommended it to a friend, I thought I'd do it now. We stayed there for a week in March 2007. On arrival, we discovered that there only 4 of us there, until the Manager reminded us that a party of 50 people from Wales were attending that night! The room - clean, fairly spacious, ensuite did what it should, and ouor balcony gave us lovely views of the green valley (2007 was a great year for snow!! hmmm) The food - couldn't complain at all.. choice was good and the food was good. We gave fondue night a miss and headed into town though. Location - away from the centre of town so not too rowdy. However, the centre is less than a 5 minute stroll away, so we find it perfect!! Ski buss stops right out side, or you can grab a taxi for 5 euros. The ski lockup is secure and has boot warmers. perfect. Sauna - yep.. we used it often, and was a great way to unwind. The bar was small and social, but again, we weren't after rowdy. Staff - never had any problems and the manager would always book us a cab to the gondola cos we'd got up late and missed the bus!! All in all we had a great time, and the Welsh group were crackers! they certainly know how to have a good time, and came to our rescue when we got lost on the slopes on the first day!! We would happily go back there, as long as there was some snow!!
Nice hotel, staff not overly pleasant.
I had visited this hotel with my mother, not in 2003 as stated, but a few years before that. The room, was fine, pretty basic, but clean and tidy. It was just a few minutes walk downhill to the small town centre which was very nice. My only negative comment about this hotel would have to be the staff. Whilst we visited a few years back, I do still remember that the owner of the hotel was not pleasant at all. Very stand-offish and not at all welcoming. I thought it was perhaps his attitude was just my imagination, but having read other reviews about this hotel, it seems that my opinion was correct. The servers in the dining room were pleasant enough, and I remember a few small children running about (although I am sure that they are not so small now!). I also remember visiting the post hotel for lunch. It is located in the heart of the town centre and I remember wishing we had stayed here instead. Overall, a nice, clean, basic hotel, with good food. Service is lacking and not in anyway friendly or welcoming.
he's OK
we had a 2 week stay having read reviews on this site before arriving. we found all to be in line with expectations, no disappointments.Standards were good all through and the staff particularly friendly. Mrs Modlinger is English and extremly nice. Mr M has been misjudged in a review on this site. He was said to be grumpy and miserable but ignore that. He is friendly and helpful and runs a good. hotel. If you want someone touchy- feely then forget it as he is not. He cracks a good joke and from our view is just as nice as Mrs M. Definitely a hotel to be recommended. Gordon and Eve
Great hotel
We got a fantastic deal at this hotel; £200 half board including flights with Crystal. Room was fine (somewhat old fashioned) with lovely balcony overlooking the hills. Food was excellent and plentiful. The public areas were nice and relaxed and the manger was very helpful (printing off timetables, lending us his mountain bikes). The hotel was very quiet and perhaps our views are informed by the incredible price, but i would definitely recommend.
One of the best
The Modlinger is a 30 year old hotel on the outskirts of the small village of Soll. The rooms are very bright, airy and clean. It's nice to have a bath on a ski holiday too. It's far enough from the centre of the village to be very quiet (about a 5 min walk to the village centre) Food was good and plentiful but there was no choice of a main course. Breakfast was the same everyday. If you choose to walk to the ski lift its quite a trek, especially if you keep your equipment at the hotel. The good news is that the ski bus stops right outside and you'll get a seat because its the first stop. I'm a regular in Soll and would definitly recommend the Modlinger.
Lovely Hotel
Stayed at the Modlinger with a group of friends on a skiing holiday for one week in February 2006. The Hotel was lovely, rooms were fine, food was good - it was lovely to be served diiner in the restaurant in the evening as opposed to buffet style. The bar area was OK witha lovely fire but not much life. Staff were OK but owner was a misery! Bit of a treck to the slopes. Overall a good week!
