My wife and I – both middle-aged, seasoned business and leisure travelers (more than 60/70 hotel nights per year) – spent three nights at the Aetoma Hotel in February 2008. We loved it and wholeheartedly recommend it. We bypassed the service companies offering bookings and contacted the hotel directly. We booked the “Akrokeramo junior suite” at 100,00 euros a night. The hotel is a sort of private residence with only five rooms. It is housed in a classical building in the heart of the old city of Nafplion and has been set up with incredible care and attention to detail. Our room was perfect from any point of view. We had all the luxuries you would expect in a modern hotel – including a flat screen TV set on the wall opposite the bed – and the care and love you would expect in a luxury private residence. All rooms are different and decorated with taste. Our room, on the top floor of the hotel, had a balcony leading to a real terrace on the side and allowed a superb view over the old city and of Akronafplia. We had six windows, including in the count those of the entrance hall and of the bathroom! The bathroom is small, but very comfortable with an incredible shower with three different set of jets and natural light coming from the ceiling! Breakfast is served in the hall of the first floor and you have to plea to stop them bringing you more temptations. During the day (and the night) the hotel is not manned, but you receive the entrance keys and the telephone numbers of the owners in case of need. The Aetoma is run by the owners Mrs Panagiota Antonopoulou and her husband. They were there for us, plus Carey who is British, to provide information on the region, and to help us had we had any problems. When we arrived, we enquired about parking possibilities and Carey simply gave us her parking slot. The Aetoma is the ideal place of stay for those who travel to region to appreciate its culture and sights, and not for those who look for sun, sand, sex and alcohol. If you have the Akrokeramo suite – we warmly recommend it – be aware that you will have to walk up two flights of stairs. All in all, the Aetoma will be for us one strong reason to return to region; the dates of our next trip will depend of the availability of the Akrokeramo suite.
