We booked a premium double room as we had stayed at the hotel for a couple of days in Sept 2009 and the premium room with sea view then was good.
What we had this time (a week) was another nice room with very large bed and great sea views. But the room had a connecting room door which was locked, but it was through this door we had to put up with the sound of 2 different couples bonkig away at different times.
We appreciate that Newquay is a 'young couples' town, and to an extent we like its 'sassy' feel. But being woken at 3am by 30 somethings moaning and groaning, then again at breakfast time was irritating.
So watch out if your given room 221 or 222!
The breakfast (full Cornish) was small so presumably the Cornish people dont eat much! Often waited for 15-20 mins for it to arrive. Its main claim to fame is its sea views, but I have to say we could have paid another £25 per night and stayed at the Atlantic.
Car parking was booked in advance and was in the Hotels car park, but bear in mind its small and we often found getting out small car out tricky.
Shame the hotel has no 'entertainment',I feel its missed a trick here, as Newquay has nothing for the over fifties. And this place has the space to provide it and get even more income in the bar area, very nice garden overlooking the ocean.
Hotel is right over the Gt Western beach.

We were attracted by the hotel’s website which is one of the best we have seen showing a modern and nicely decorated environment. During our arrival we realised that none of what we had seen and imagined applied to this hotel. We booked 2 standard rooms which were VERY dirty. The bathroom was never cleaned (with hair in the bath tub and unflashed toilet) and the sheets were dirty from the previous residents (blood, make-up and hair). In addition to that, a strange smell of urine coming from the carpet was extremely disgusting. Employees at the reception were rude and unwilling to help when we asked for another room. They were very ironic and when we asked to be given new sheets they took us into a very dirty storage room with vacuum cleaners and dirty towels, where used sheets were piled. The next day another employee (the only one helpful) took us to the storage room where the clean sheets were kept, proving that his colleague gave us used sheets. In order to use the bathroom we had to buy bleach and clean is ourselves….The living condition in this VERY old and not refurbished hotel (at least in standard rooms) is very bad! Don’t spend your money there!

Me and my husband stayed for a week at the Great Western Hotel Newquay. We choose this hotel as it is one of the biggest and oldest in Newquay and thought this meant it would be of a good standard!! We were wrong!!!!
The staff were completley unapproachable and even failed to acknowledge us when we said good morning to them when they were on Reception.
My husband was basically told off the first morning down for breakfast - as the dining room was virtually empty and he had a knife missing he took one of another setting and was shouted at by a member of staff!!! Surely our table should have been laid properly to begin with.
We had paid extra for a sea view room as we went in October and knew the weather was going to be bad we thought well at least we can sit and watch the sea - but even this we could not manage. The room was tiny and smelt of damp and the furniture was in desperate need of modernisation. The sea view was supposed to be seen throught the smallest of single glazed windows which looked like it hadn't been cleaned since the hotel had been built!!! The only way to see the sea was to open the window and stick your head out!!!
Definately will not be staying here again. Very disappointed.
Only good thing about hotel was it was right in the centre of Newquay so it wasn't far to the nearest restaurant or bar to escape the hotel!!!

we stayed at the great western for three nights in october 2011.we booked a standard double room for £39.00 per night and could not wish for any better everything was spotlessly clean plenty of room to move around not like some b+bs we stayed in . excellent location close to beach and town and not too far from other places in cornwall. we both decided to eat at the steam bar we can recomend this good portions and value for money . we decided to pay the £5.00 per night for parking and are glad we did as there is nowhere to park .
