Submitted By: Mrs S WThe staff are very helpful and friendly providing you with whatever information you require and the atmosphere is calming. The hotel is very clean as it has just been refurbished although we experience tiny ants in our room which were sprayed as soon as we reported it.
You don't have to fight for the sunbeds at the pool side either as the beach is on your doorstep so beds are not always full. There is another great outdoor comfy seating area which is under shade if you fear the sun.
The evening meal was a buffet with limited choice so not the best but adequate - desserts were yum though so you can forget your diet!
The hotel is rated as 3 star and it compared very well to other 3 stars, I would say it was more like a 4 star in my opinion - definately one I'd go to again.
So all in all, a great place to relax and unwind with quiet strolls on the beach and in the small village but not brilliant if you're looking for lively, busy holiday with loads of entertainment laid on.
Hope this helps!

Submitted By: Mrs A JonesAll that aside the staff tried their best to make it seem like a Holiday, although the Hotel charged us seven and a half Euroes to play tennis on their building site tennis courts. We had to abandon it after awhile as were sick of climbing over building materials to retrieve the balls.
I am sure when it is finished it will be nice as in a beautiful setting. Wouldn't advice it for at least 3 months.
If no building work would have rated it higher.

Submitted By: Miss SJ ListonFrom appearance the hotel is tastefully decorated and easy on the eye. However when we first arrived to commence the holiday we were met with rude and un-helpful welcome.
There was no assistance with luggage nor an explanation of the hotel and it was clear we struggled to get through the very slow revolving door with a small child and infant in a buggy. After waiting for a very long time for lifts that appear to of reached the end of their life cycle we then found we had been placed in a room that had the beautiful sea view obscured by the large yellow dome above the anti room.
Weary from the early start and travel we decided to put the first impressions aside and un pack. We noticed that the room did not have tea/coffee making facilities which caused me alarm as my infant would require boiled water a simple requirement.
Again I was met with a rude receptionist who was unwilling to assist me in any way so I was left to deal with my request via the holiday representative the following day.
We found the food very repetitive and not child friendly and after staying in the hotel for two weeks it was clear that the menu was set on a seven day turn a round which meant instead of having a varied choice for breakfast you only had the same item on the same day each week with the standard cold buffet the same each day.
Evening meals were an improvement however it became apparent that the meat choice that evening would become compatible with the rice or pasta the following evening.
I found the pool bar over priced and again repetitive and staff struggled to understand the orders as on three occasions the order was received wrong.
The maintenance was poor as our room had three door knobs broken, noisy air con and a sink tap that leaked all over the floor whilst running. The lifts are definitely in need of updating as they are extremely slow and have doors that close on you before you enter the carriage fully.
On one very embarrassing evening when I gently moved the table to accommodate the infant buggy, a table leg fell off and caused a riot with the dinning room staff.
We did find the cleanliness of a good standard and the room maids very helpful and friendly.
We found the entertainment in the hotel very poor and the kids club facilities advertised by first choice were none existent at this hotel except on the one day a British film crew arrived on behalf of travel agents.
All in all a very poor holiday and I struggle to understand why First Choice have rated this facility their 3 star plus. A question I will be putting to them.

Submitted By: Mrs Gwyneth JonesI know you can't book weather but it was absolutely perfect, not a cloud in the clear blue sky all week. As for the hotel, it was actually our second choice but proved to be an excellent one.
Its position is perfect, only a very short walk from the beach. We could not fault the hotel in any way, spotlessly clean, airy (although can only speak for our room which was the twin that sleeps 2-4), all rooms with sea view, small but adequate balcony, air conditioning, plenty of electric sockets (and not all hidden under tables etc!)
The swimming pool was lovely and the top edging tiles were scrubbed every morning (as witnessed from our 8th floor balcony). Dining facilities timed to perfection, terrace bar opening when breakfast finished (10am) till 6pm with adequate choice of snacks & drinks.
They now have Sangria down to a fine art!
Maybe three minor points - the hotel entertainment finished quite early in the evening and would perhaps keep more people in the bar/lounge area if it continued a bit later. The evening meal, whilst of a very good standard, could perhaps do with one more choice for the veggie people and finally, beware the cost of the hotel sunbeds on the beach - expensive!
We paid 24Euros for 3 beds & 2 umbrellas for one day (those by the pool are free) but then again it IS the Algarve! The area is quiet with a few bars but Monte Gordo is only a 7Euro taxi ride away.
All in all, a fabulous holiday, friendly staff and no hesitation in returning in the future. Enjoy!

Submitted By: Mr R MeadowsThe hotel is clean and extremely well run with friendly and efficient staff. All rooms face South and the sea and the position of the balcony tends to protect the room from direct sun, while giving full sunlight to the balconies.
Air conditioning is standard and is very quiet and efficient. Bathrooms are small but have baths/showers and there is copious hot water. Satellite TV offers Sky News, BBC1 and BBC2 with a selection of Portuguese and Spanish channels. There is a stocked mini-bar in the room.
All meals are served buffet-style and tend to be simple, well presented and very good value.
Breakfast has cooked and continental options, with fruit, meat, cheese, breads, croissants, scrambled / boiled eggs, bacon, sausage, etc., and these can be mixed as desired.
Dinner has four courses with a delicious soup, hors d'oeuvres, a choice of two main courses and a desert. We found the deserts somewhat repetitive but there was always an option of fruit salad (mixed tinned and fresh) or fresh fruit. There is no information provided for allergy sufferers, although this can be requested.
A reasonably priced and well-presented lunch is available in the pool-side bar.
Evening entertainment is very limited in this resort and if you are looking for night-life, this may not be the resort for you. The hotel has a good bar and reasonable drink prices and provides some evening entertainment.
Alternatively, there is a casino and plenty of bars, etc., at Monte Gordo, a short taxi ride away.
Tap water was not recommended for drinking by the holiday representative, but bottled water is available at around 0.54€ for 5 litres nearby. We had no problems using the water for cleaning teeth. There are no tea/coffee making facilities in the rooms.
There is an internet kiosk in the lobby charging 1€ for 10 minutes. The connection is fast and reliable and webmail applications or MSN messenger can be accessed and email sent with ease.
We had a couple of problems with the room safe and the energy-saving electricity switch in the room, but once reported, these were rapidly fixed by the hotel staff who understood our English explanations perfectly.
There are two supermarkets in Altura, one about 400 m from the hotel and a larger version about 1 km away. If you don't take the half-board option, or like to take lunch outside of the hotel there are at least 6 restaurants close-by.
For beach-lovers there is around 15 km of clean white sand available just a short walk from the hotel. The sea is clean, although cold in May and the beach slopes fairly gently. There is quite a strong undertow particularly when the on-shore sea breeze is blowing.
For those considering travelling with First Choice, the excursions are good value and well-organised. For the Seville excursion, we did not take the guided tour and most of those who accompanied us found this tiring and somewhat disjointed.
The First Choice representative was available in the hotel at the stated times and contact information was available on the notice boards.
Unless you are paranoid about needing to sit with your partner on the 2 hour flight home, don't bother with the pre-booked seats option. For 11€ each, you are offered the chance to relax with a coffee until the queues abate then to check in at leisure.
For us, there were virtually no food or drink facilities in the departures hall and we watched the relatively small queue grow dramatically and although if we'd had the courage to wait until after the latest check in time, there was no queue; this caused the most stress of the whole holiday. Just join the queue and save your money.
Overall a very good value and relaxing holiday and one that we would definitely recommend for some serious R & R.

Submitted By: Mrs A S GosbellAnd yes we will be going back this year in august 2007.
You could not ask for much more than the hotel, staff, beach and area has to offer.
Thats if you like a quiet hotel bit of music, happy friendly staff, whom remember us year after year and make you feel as if you have returned home.
All the rooms facing the sea, and so clean.
I have not one bad thing to say, apart from sad when we have to leave to go back to England.
The beach is pure sand you are very lucky if you can find a stone.
The sea can be fairly warm this side of the Algarve, 10 minute drive by car, and you can catch a ferry, over to Aymonte in Spain.

Submitted By: Miss K GrinsteadWhen I last visited this hotel the food was fantastic and the staff great even though they were really short staffed. The hotel was always clean and tidy thanks to the brilliant maids who worked for so many hours.
I got to know a lot about the staff and on a few occasions even went to the local bar Augusto’s with them which was such a fantastic place and was the highlight of the holiday!

Buffet restaurant with excellent food & staff so helpful.

Surrounding area had many walks & villagers so pleased to help even although some spoke little English this all added to the feel of the relaxed area.

We were away for two weeks but came home feeling refreshed - so much so we have already booked to go back again.
If you like a relaxed, peaceful holiday without hassle, good food, friendly people, and most of all the attentions of excellent hotel staff then this is for you.
