" We recently stayed at the Sunrise... "

We recently stayed at the Sunrise Hotel, Bansko, and found it absolutely delightful! In fact, we enjoyed one of our best ever holidays there, finding that for all round good value it came top of the list, and we are regular travellers. In fact we have never taken the time before to write a review, but felt that on this occasion it was most deserving!
We thought that the hotel itself was lovely, and of very good quality. The rooms had a fantastic view of the mountains which were awesome to look out from the balcony when they were covered in snow.
The facilities of the hotel were excellent, and after a hard days ski-ing it was great to be pampered in the spa centre, and be treated to some of the best (and cheapest!) massages which we have ever had.
The food was excellent, with the best and biggest english breakfast that we have ever had abroad! The staff were friendly and helpful.
The resort of Bansko itself is charming, managing to combine the new and the old well. The old town is wonderful and has a real good atmosphere in the restaurants and bars. Everything was extremely cheap, and brilliant value for money.
If there is a down side to Bansko, it is that there is a lot of building work going on at present, although this has to stop for the main skiing season, and does not deter from the enjoyment of everything else that Bansko has to offer. We certainly will be going back there next year.

" We were originally booked into Cedar... "

We were originally booked into Cedar lodge 3 but on arrival the apartments were not finished, we were transfered to the 4 star Sunrise Hotel by Med Hotels with an assurance that the accomodation was superior to Cedar 3 and we wouldn't be dissappointed.
The Sunrise hotel is new and is a spacious well appointed hotel but that is where it ends, The hotel is in the middle of a building site with unfinished roads and I estimate it will remain like this for the next 18 months.
We found the reception staff and management rude and condersending, the bar staff arrived at different prices for the same round of drinks so beware and get the till receipt before paying. the bus driver, doorman and domestic staff are very good.

The food although well cooked was repeated at each sitting for the whole week with no choice other than the five offering on the repeated menu.

Although the facilities are 4 star the service and choice are 1 - 2 star. We would not choose to return to either Bansko or the Hotel Sunrise because of the building work, poor service and the attitude of the staff. We would rather pay more in France and Austria where you know what service and quality of experience you are getting, Bansko is to much of a lottery.

Med Hotels on this occassion have in my view let us down, there rep on site didn't resolve our issues to our satisfaction and on return our complaint to Med Hotels was met with indifference and shrugged off as an unfortunate incident.

On the positve side the Sking in Bansko was great and the prices are half that of europe and if you are prepared for some problems you wont be disappointed when it goes pear shaped.

" Originally booked into Predela... "

Originally booked into Predela Apartments but found out 2 weeks before we were due to travel that the local authorities had not granted a certificate for the electricity to power the swimming pool, sauna etc (should have been a bit suspicious as the photos show no water in the pool!). The good people at CO-Op travel found an alternative which included half board, all the facilities promised as per Predela plus an Irish bar on site. All this 2 weeks before Xmas and for 16 people in our group. What a result.
Arrived in resort after a 12 and half hour delay at Luton airport only to find the Cedar Lodge 3 not only did not have electric similar to Predela it mostly did not have any windows. Medhotels relocated us to Hotel Sunrise, all facilities as before but this hotel was complete with electric.
Thought all was sorted but after the first day things started to go downhill. Staff were rude. We were hidden away in the Conference room for meals and offered the same menu every day for the week. The only variation was sometimes it was as a buffet and others served to you but always the same menu which only had 5 choices.
The snowboarding was great but the people are rude in the main, ignorant and certainly do not appreciate where their new found wealth has come from although the cleaner and bus driver were great and were tipped accordingly.
New Bansko is one big building site that once all the development is complete will impload as there will not be enough resturants and the gondola and ski lifts will not be able to cope. Most new hotels have generators to deal with the frequent power cuts. Old Bansko is very picturesque though.
My advice, pay a bit more and go to Austria at least the Austrians are polite. But if you have to go to Bansko please make sure your accomodation is built and the facilities are available. Medhotels are still taking booking for Cedar Lodge 3 and it still is not finished. They are not very sympathetic either so beware
