I can't tell you how pleased we were with this Hotel in Ostia Antica, a short train ride from Rome. We booked it through Ryan Air travel at a great rate. It is rated 4 stars, however, don't expect luxurious 4 star. This hotel is in the walls of a castle and is quite 'rustic'. The owners have made a nice job of decorating the rooms with nice fabrics and the room was very clean. The owners made us very, very welcome and couldn't be helpful enough. The only thing we found odd was the breakfast which was good in size but like a sugar rush - typically Italian apparently.
Round and about there are some good restaurants (most closed on a Wednesday) with a range of prices. Our favourite was a very informal restaurant inside the walls of the Piazza right on the corner. It was family run, very cheap, there was no menu you just chose from what the 'Mama' had decided to cook! Across the road there is a small bar and the owner is smashing! He made us little snacks everytime we had a drink!
If you want to get into the city the ticket is 1euro, the train runs frequently and the ticket covers you for any trains in Rome for 90 minutes, ample time to get to the main sites via the underground train system. Tre station is a short walk from the castle, infatc you can see the bridge from the side of the castle.
And of course you must visit the site of Ostia Antica!
