Scruffy but beautiful location from joanne101
I booked this hotel as a convenient base for walking in the area. The location is truly stunning. The breakfast was fine and the seating area outside was pleasant. The real problem was the decor generally in the hotel and the room specifically. The hotel was generally grubby. The room had a stunning view over the River Wye, but the furnishings were grotty and as for the bathroom, the water was barely warm and the bathroom suite a grotty peach colour. Well we booked nice an early for a 40th birthday party but on entering our room up in the goods thought we must be in the staff quarters and had taken the last available room. Obviously hotel has not seen a hotel inspector or a chamber maid for years, it really wouldnt pass. The very worse thing was the bed, a bed which leaves the impression of the springs on your back in the morning thats if you have slept at all of course!!!! The Royal Hotel was purchased by a team of 4 directors in March 2007, and the name changed to the Royal Lodge. The new owners have already refurbished 6 rooms, including Room 12, a new Fire Alarm system exceeding current regulations is in the process of being fitted. The conference/function room has been renovated with the Parquet Flooring being restored to its former glory and new lighting and decor has added to its final finish.

We had booked a night at this hotel after seeing it when walking in the area and were impressed with the exterior and the excellent location overlooking the River Wye. The first room allocated to us on arrival was Rm 1 which was supposedly a "superior" room. We could smell the damp as we approached the door and were horrified to see damp patches all over the walls and mildew on the curtains. We booked this hotel through the parent company 'Late Availability'. It seemed like a bargain at the time,. Beware!! The hotel is NOT totally refurbished. We were put in Room 12, a room that looked like it hadn't been refurbed since the hotel was built. The carpet was threadbare with strings coming out where it was, basically, falling apart. The bathroom? Uurgh!! The floor was ingrained with filth and where years of 'mopping' had been carried out, the grime was up the side of the bath panel and the walls. total refurb and looking good from sallymartin
just home from a christmas weekend . the hotel is undergoing a total upgrade which should have been completed by this weekend. unfortunatly they had had a few problems so work still going on. However they were up front gave us all (approx 70 of us) a cash refund and provided a great service. Staff were all very nice and helpfull. food was good with a great sunday carvery. Great position and views from the hotel. Give them a few months to sort it out and you should have a great stay at the Royal.
A real find from LS64
Hotel in fantastic position with lovely views of the river Wye and the valley. A short, but near vertical!, walk to Yat Rock where the views were breathtaking, apparently during the summer there are peregrines to watch. The hotel decor was a little tired, but it was clean and very comfortable. The staff were friendly and helpful and the food was fantastic. Highly recommended.
