Our first holiday together! We booked...
9 / 10
Oct 2006, Miss M Evans

Our first holiday together!
We booked 7 nights at Benalmadena Palace, self-catering, one bedroom apartment. The transfer was only about an hour - with 2 drop offs before our hotel, so not too bad, I didn’t think.
The apartment was on the first floor close to the snack bar (open all day), main entertainment bar (evenings till approx 2am) and the pools. A bad choice you may think but it was actually really handy and unusually peaceful.
The hotel was clean and tidy and full of very friendly, helpful staff, from reception to the life guards to the bar staff and the chamber maids - no one could do enough to help.
Our room was adequately equipped for self-catering. The bathroom was not quite as clean as I would have liked and showed a bit of wear and tear considering the hotel is only a couple of years old.
We didn’t have enough towels but a quick word at reception and extras were delivered within minutes.
The beds were made and bins emptied every day. The bedding was changed at least 3 times.
The hotel is very family-orientated. We went in the last week of September so it seemed pretty quiet - no fighting for sun loungers and no late night drunks round the pool! The building work was on the other side of the hotel and we didn’t hear a thing but I’m not convinced any work was actually done while we were there!
The hotel boasts a lovely outdoor pool area with a baby pool. an indoor heated pool, Jacuzzi, steam room ,sauna, and well-equipped gym. Other spa facilities were available but you have to book and pay for them.
The kid’s club runs for about 4 hours a day - the staff are great. I was always told the Spanish love children and it shows.
We tried the hotel restaurant on two occasions - breakfast and evening meal. Both were buffets with an extensive range of hot and cold food - Spanish and English. It was a bit pricier than eating out but was very impressive.
The hotel is situated on a hill which will seem pretty daunting to the disabled or young kids. The car-park half way up the hill does help a bit but if you find it too much, you can always get a cab to the top for about 3 euros.
The walk from the hotel to the marina is highly recommended - especially in the evenings when everything is lit up. The first row of bars and restaurants are mostly English - good for your late morning fry-up. Along the sea front are the Spanish restaurants. You might be accosted by the waiters but don’t be put off - they are really friendly and will remember you next time you walk by too! We tried quite a few of the places there are they were all brilliant. My partner would recommend the BBQ sardines and of course - paella! I The steaks are magnificent but I do advise that you are careful when ordering - the Spanish appear to cook much more rare than we do!
The only place I wouldn’t recommend eating is the eat-all you-want buffet place further along towards the marina. It was over-priced and the food was bland.
We were advised to be cautious of anyone offering lavender or lucky charms and people selling cheap watches and tat like that - apparently, while they’re chatting to you, they’re also picking your pockets! Luckily we didn’t really get approached by anyone anyway.
We took the Airtours trip to Gibraltar to see the dolphins. I do not recommend this. An hour journey took more than 2 hours in a stiflingly hot, uncomfortable coach leaving the hotel at 7.30 am! As soon as we got there, there was barely time to nip to the loo before we were herded onto the boat for the dolphin trip. The dolphins were amazing and I don’t regret that - I do regret not finding a different excursion from one of the many available in Benalmadena itself. After the dolphin trip we were left with too much time to hang around Gib but not enough time to actually go and DO something or see something in Gib. We would have loved to have gone up the Rock but there wasn’t time. All we could do was wander round the many many many duty free shops and then back on the stinky coach for another horrendous 2+ hours!
All in all, I think Benalmadena is a lovely place and the Benalmadena Palace is highly recommended. It does live up to it’s 4 star reputation - the bottled water and fresh fruit in the room, waiters with fruit round the pool, free facilities and a lovely clean environment. I’m really glad we paid that little extra and booked this hotel.

Just back from holidays in the...

Aug 2006, Mr E Markey

Just back from holidays in the Benalmadena Palace and I have to say this is a great place for families. The room we had was pool side with a great view. Very clean and was kept well during the two weeks we were there. Everything you need is in it, hob, microwave, kettle, toaster, iron, hairdryer and even sky television if you want to watch it which we didn't.
The pool was cleaned every day and is well supervised by the lifeguards who are worth their weight in gold. There is also an indoor pool with Jacuzzi. Everyday there was games for kids and adults like water polo, basket, archery, shooting, darts and others.
There are two bars, the snack bar and the disco bar. The snack bar is pool side and is open during the day while the disco bar opens at 7pm.The staff is very pleasant and join in the fun in the evening.
The entertainment in the evening is great for kids and some of it is good for adults as well. The main guy in the entertainment is called Alex, he is very talented and is brilliant with the kids.
One of the reasons I did not give it 10 out of 10 is the food. It is very bland and I would advise you to keep away from the burgers as they taste horrible.
The other reason is the hill leading up to the apartments, it is very steep. You can cut out the steepest part by using your key card to go through the garage to the lifts. It took me about 2 or 3 mins to walk up but if you have walking difficulties it would be hard on you.
Benalmadena itself is small but nice and very clean. There are lots of cafes, bars and restaurants to choose from. A trip to Tivoli world is a must as is Aqualand. If you are going to Gibraltar make sure you bring sterling with you as they will crease you on the euro exchange. We done the rock tour but was very disappointed in it as we were hardly off the bus.
Overall we had a marvelous holiday. Would we go back to the Benalmadena palace again? Yes.

Aug 2006, Ms A P

Stayed in this hotel with husband and two children February half term 2006. What a lovely hotel.
Rooms were cleaned regularly, poolside and surrounding outside areas were immaculate. It is a great base as the beach is just down the bank and over the road and there are lots of bars and restaurants nearby.
Don't be put off by people's remarks about the bank - it's not that bad, and you can get into the hotel via the garage which is half way up the bank anyway. If we ever went to Benalmadena again we would definitely stay in this hotel.

Read! Just come back from Benalmadena...
10 / 10
Aug 2006, Miss DH Hall

Read!
Just come back from Benalmadena and it was a wicked holiday.
First when we arrived we only had to wait for like 20mins for our room and in that 20mins we got some free drinks at the bar while we were waiting which was good. Our room was really nice, big and clean. We worked out that we had the biggest room on the floor because we were on the top floor and we had the corner so we had more space and an extra balcony. So it was a good room apart from if your on floor 5 you might bang your head on the ceiling because it slopes down but you get used to it being there.
Everyone complains about the hill and how 'steep' it is and how it takes 10mins to walk up. No it doesn’t. It takes about 2minz or even less and plus there is a car park where you go through which cuts off most of the hill anyway. So there is nothing to worry about!
The pool was really nice too. I spent the first part in the indoor pool because the outdoor was crowded. Its good the indoor because there’s a gym, sauna, Jacuzzi and steam room so you could go in there all the time. I went in the outdoor pool towards the end of my holiday and it was really nice when not a lot of kids were in there.
The entertainment was ok. We only went to the flamingo dancing and the reps night which was good. They also had like singers there but we never saw them.
For the kids were good. There were a little kids club for like 3year olds and they had activities for like 12+ year olds which adults could go to.
We never tried the food because we herd that’s its not so nice. We tried the snack bar what’s outside the pool and that was nice apart from the burgers, they were horrid. But for like dinner it would be ok.
The beach was gorgeous. We went there a lot but not the beach right opposite the hotel we went further down because the sea there is weird because there is a slope so as you step a few feet in you can stand up, so go further down the beach then you can stand up for miles. Also beware of the jellyfish! They come close in!
We didn’t really stay in Benalmadena we went to the places next door to it. For kids there are to water parks called Aqualand and a theme park called Tivoli it is aimed for smaller kids but there are some rollercoaster and scary rides for adults to go on, and its open at night it opens at like 7pm till 2am in the morning so its good for a night out! Also the marina is nice to see all the boats. We went on the cable cars up to the mountains which was nice because there’s like a bird of pray thing and horses that dance, but was still good and also go to Majas in the mountains it is a really pretty village with loads of shops. There is more places but we just went to them.
Would I go again? Yes! Benalmadena was nice. The hotel was nice. And everything else was nice! Love it!

Just got back from the "Benalmadena...
9 / 10
Aug 2006, Mr E Harrison

Just got back from the "Benalmadena Palace"-I have to say it is one of the best hotels I have stayed at. The highlight of the week for me was the "Flamenco Show", but then again the in hotel entertainment was very good.
The food in the snack bar was very good, a bit expensive but of a good standard.
We are an older couple with an 8 year old daughter, and this hotel is ideal for families with children.
Pool games go down very well, and the pools are cleaned daily. Our room was in the roof overlooking the pool had we not had a terrace, however the views of the Med and the mountains where outstanding.
Let me mention the slope - well it's very manageable if you enter the hotel via the Garage (Car Park) it cuts of the worst part of the slope - you need to use your room key card, also there are short cuts to the Supermarket via a gate at the corner of the pool area.
There is some noise at times - that's because people are chatting and laughing and enjoying themselves, and is not at all off putting.
The rooms are cool with the Air Con.
I have no hesitation in recommending this hotel to families with children, or younger couples, and really don't let the slope put you off - find the short cut via the car park.

My wife and 2 teenage boys have just...

Jul 2006, I Bell

My wife and 2 teenage boys have just returned from the Palace. The hotel is excellent, with good staff and facilities, which include a large, well maintained pool area. Having 2 teenagers on board, we were slightly apprehensive about how the holiday would go but it turned out our fears never came to fruition.
There were daily pool games for kids and older guests and in the complex, the staff organised Archery, Shooting, Darts, Killer Pool amongst others and the Kids Club was well used and the kids seemed to love the Hotel Reps, who ran the club. Evening entertainment is varied, with singers, bingo and quizzes and although it was not Las Vegas, it was sufficient. There are also computers and a games room, should you need to pass some time indoors.
The room was of a decent size and cleaned regularly, although if your room does not face the pool, you shall be wakened at 8am, due to construction work going on across the road. As stated, the pool area was lovely and the Waiters provided free fruit to everyone in the afternoon, which was a nice touch.
The hill is not recommended for the elderly or disabled and "buggy pushers" shall return to the UK, fitter than when they left but it is manageable for most of the guests. The Palace is a lovely, clean and well run establishment and everyone we spoke to, agreed.
Two excellent places nearby to eat are, The Belfry, for great breakfasts, which are great value at 5.25 Euros (maximum) and special mention goes to a little terraced Bar/Diner called Crumbles, which serves delicious evening meals at great prices and they make their own chips and mashed potato! Both establishments are on the same road, which is reached by taking your left at the roundabout, along the Promenade.
All in all, our family had a great time and if this review helps you out and you enjoy yourself, as much as we did, it was worth the writing.

I have just got back from Malaga from...

Jul 2006, scottysx2006

I have just got back from Malaga from my stay at the Benalmadena palace and I just want to say it is very nice and clean and the facilities are great including a football pitch and volleyball indoor and outdoor swimming pools a sauna a gym internet access (3 computers coin operated msn and yahoo messengers) the rooms are lovely two showers and a TV hairdryers irons microwave kettle the lot! Oh and I bed settee.
The bad bit are that it is on a hill so it is pretty tiring to walk it especially if you struggle to walk or have to push a buggy you can cut half of the hill of by going to the basement of the apartment and cutting through the car park but then you still have a steep hill.
The is a back exit at the back of the hotel near the football pitch which is also a hill but an easier one at the bottom there is a supermarket and to the left it leads you straight to the main road.
Hope this helps!

We stayed on honeymoon, this was the...
4 / 10
Jun 2006, Mr M Griffith-Yates

We stayed on honeymoon, this was the 3rd hotel we stayed in, in 24 hrs due to it being a last minute deal and it was booked through Going Places, the 2 other hotels had no booking for us from Airtours.
anyway good points first. Hotel was clean fully tiled room was clean, bad points. food in hotel was very bland and if your keen on toast don’t have any because the bread tastes like Madeira cake very sweet, also a couple of times when you have roast beef you only get mash but strangely no veg? unless you like grated lettuce or beetroot, there is plenty of veggie stuff which if not eaten is left out the following day or until it gets eaten, also the sweet part of the menu is terrible, 3 times we had pineapple sponge but no custard or cream, why? Plenty of angel delight which was also bland, so really food was tasteless and bland, if you like tasty food take some with you because you won’t find any in the restaurant.
There is very little to do here at hotel apart from sit round pool that’s if you can get a seat that’s not been covered by a towel at 6 in the morning! There are facilities for kids but as we have none doesn’t apply to us, the night entertainment is awful, with a mini disco from 9 well shall we say a few records and the main man dancing on the dance floor purely for his own entertainment, after that it was bingo again terrible. Then the main attraction which was either a singer a parrot show or flamenco dancers so not much really.
The bar was expensive with not much choice in beers and only 1 English speaking barman who was ok the other was a woman who everyone called frosty pants cause when never smiled and always had a frown on her face and was rude.
The hotel is at the top of a steep road approx 100mtr long but halfway down there is access to the basement with your key so it helps a little, there is nothing to see or do in Benalmadena so do what most people do and go to Torremolinos or 1 of the other towns where the other hotels have more entertainment. this hotel needs dragging into the 21 century entertainment wise and i would be willing to help out in that department so if your reading this and you work there contact me and I will bring your hotel up to date with proper entertainment for adults and proper music for the disco.
The room we stayed in was ok but at night time it was noisy, we could hear other rooms above and below and next door, especially at night time when people start moving furniture around in order to pull out the spare beds very annoying! also the doors to the rooms are spring loaded so it slams shut very hard if you don’t close it yourself so be warned it will wake you up because its so loud.
We will not be going here again and not last minute either none of our requests were met i.e. sea view, quiet hotel double bed, we got a noisy hotel single beds no view so 0 out of 10 for that! Thanks Going Places for making our Honeymoon terrible.

Just got back from 1 week at...
8 / 10
Jun 2006, Miss F Smith

Just got back from 1 week at Benalmadena Palace with 4 Girls - 17, 17, 17 + 18.
The hotel was of a great standard, only 2 years old and everything is practically new. The pool is very clean although very busy during the warmer days. We found the beach was quieter and away from the hustle and bustle of families and young children.
The indoor pool is good as well, although yet again, a lot of young screaming kids.
We had a self-catering apartment which was much bigger than expected. Although, we were on the top floor and we were obviously enjoying the extra loft-space that could not be used for anything else. There was a living/dining room with a sofa bed and a bedroom with a double bed. It was all very clean however the maid only changed the towels once properly, on our last day?! This seemed a bit strange.
The kitchen area is small and beware because the plates easily break on the marble floor! Oh dear!
We were looking for a girlie holiday for my 18th Birthday and had a great stay. Benalmadena is mainly for couples and families but a short taxi ride, or walk if your brave enough can take you to the Marina or 24 Hour Square. This is where you have to go for nightlife. 24 Hour Square is the place to be for younger people, however beware of touts if you walk there, they will try to get you to come to their bars which are usually overly priced. One bar, Rocky's, promised us free tickets for "all the best clubs at 24 hr square". Hmm we got 1 ticket for Zona.. Which is free anyway!
I don't think we would go back, not because we had a bad time but simply as we would want to try out somewhere else. If you are looking for a family-orientated hotel the palace is quite good, we noticed there was often karaoke in the disco bar at night which kept the children entertained.

9 / 10
Jun 2006, Miss C Rooney

My parents, my brother and i arrived at the Benalmadena palace to find it very clean, there is also a small shop which sells bacon and brown sauce and ham and juice which is good.
When we got to our room my mum was very disappointed because she wanted a pool view but we got a view of building work! Which wasn’t good, it was clean except it can be cold at night. We needed more blankets as there wasn’t enough. My mum went and asked for a pool view but nothing was done so we said nothing after that, stayed in the room for our entire journey.
The restaurant is quite dear so we only went once, me and my brother only liked toast anyway since we are very fussy eaters. There is a games room which was good and a cinema, but my brother (12) and me (14) were always in the games room, there is also a bar on that floor too and on the bottom floor is the wee park for little kids and the pool bar.
It wasn’t really that noisy, as for the hill it wasn’t as bad but my mum has walking difficulties and she managed it, but we always went through the car park way, but sometimes my brother and I walked up the rest of the hill which isn't much and it was quicker to our room, I thought . We took a bus to Fuenierger where the market and all was, which was good and there was good shopping shops there too.
We took a trip to Marbella to see all the rich boats which was good, but we weren't there long and my parents thought it would have been cheaper to go by bus somehow. If you are Irish if you walk down the hill and turn left, and keep walking till the end of the path and you come to the bus stop well there’s an Irish bar opposite it at the corner you cant miss it. Benalmadena is far from every where good so we got a taxi to the harbour, which is worth going to as you can see these cool fish with sharp teeth like hundreds of them, and my brother threw a slice of pizza in and its was gone in like 2 seconds.
It was hard coming home as we couldn’t pronounce Benalmadena but we managed it anyway. Just watch out for people giving you scratch cards saying "oh my god, you have just won either a camcorder or 500 euro or a free holiday!", they make you go to this hotel where they try and convince you to holiday with them again, my mum was going to go for it but my dad told her not to. I was looking to go for it too. They are very sneaky! But we ended up not taking it and we scratched the wee thing and found out we won a holiday thing, surprise, surprise! But we’ve lost it now anyway and it wasn’t really a free holiday.
Overall it was a great holiday, but i would like to go to a different area as there is nothing to do.
Good luck.

May 2006, Mrs G Graham

Just got back from 1 week at the Benalmadena Palace, overall Hotel good. Rooms were good size and clean, we had two bedrooms and two bathrooms! Beware walls very thin and can get noisy at night.
Food at Hotel good but could have been better for kids. Pool area very good and entertainment staff very friendly and took kids away to play games at the mini club. Hill leading up to Hotel not that bad you can go through car park and this takes off the worse part of the hill, just remember your room key you need it to access the door.
Overall we enjoyed the holiday and the resort but would stay further along towards the Marina area. A must see at Benalmadena is the public park, great for kids and it’s free.

Apr 2006, Mr A Carr

This is a well run hotel. The staff were friendly and the standard of cleanliness in the main parts of the hotel was high although our room wasn't quite as clean as we would have liked.
Entertainment in the hotel is pretty standard fare - Kids disco from 9pm until 9.30ish then a quiz or bingo followed by the main entertainment at 10pm. This could be Spanish dancers, a singer or karaoke (a special word here for Bob from the 'Amp & Decs' karaoke - he's a top guy and absolutely brilliant with the kids).
The bar does get busy. We found the atmosphere friendly enough. There is a decent big screen in there too for those important football matches.
The food on offer in the restaurant is reasonable enough for those who don't want to venture out on a night.
This hotel has a 4 star rating and, to be fair, it's probably the most accurate rating for it. The reason I have given this 8 out of 10 and not a higher mark is down to it's location. Yes, the hill is steep and troublesome if you're not too fit but the hill worries me for another reason... If you have a buggy and you lose your grip on it when going downhill then it would certainly hurtle down onto the very busy main road at the bottom. This may seem a bit dramatic but it is easy to slip on leaves on the bank and the result could be catastrophic. Also, once on the main road, the first stretch of pavement is not great for pushchairs. A little moan, I know, but for those who will be taking a pushchair or buggy at least you know!
We enjoyed our stay and would recommend this hotel. Would we come again? The answer would be no I'm afraid. Next time it will be a hotel which has a better, flatter location.
