The Ex Pat Improvements
from Scud225
During the 1990s I used to stay at the Ex Pat on each break. Then it was a single guys paradise and a great afternoon place to hang out.Times have moved on and the whole Patong Beach hotel scene has evolved. The Ex Pat may have been left but gradually improvements are being done. I currently reside in Patong and still pop into the Ex Pat for an evening beer or two and meet up with old friends.Last year one wing was refurbished and at the moment the wing beside the reception is being done.By high season it will be ready. I understand the negative reviews reference the dark approach road and that it seems isolated. The police now have installed additional street lights and manage a car park along the street. The Ex Pat remains one of the closest locations to the bar action of Soi Bangla.
Expat, good value for money
from KidneyWiper
I've stayed at the Expat Hotel many times in the past 16 years. I've always enjoyed my stays there. The staff and management are very freindly and helpful. The rooms are being modernised (most have been already) and are clean and functional. The area around the swimming pool is a great place to relax. There is a good restaurant and bar where the food on offer is very good and great value for money. The hotel is very conveniently located for the beach, shopping and nightlife. Try staying there, you will be very pleasantly surprised. - Phil Abbott, Viet Nam.
makes you want to repatriate
from mincognito
I had a reservation for two nights but left after one. The room was atrocious. There were little ants everywhere including in the bed, and many mosquitoes, camouflaged by the pealing wallpaper -- I woke up with welts on my head. On the positive side, since the room also had its own lizard crawling around the walls and ceiling, it is probably free of spiders. The stained sheets do not cover the last half meter of the bed and your feet lie directly on a soiled mattress featuring multiple cigarette burn holes. The room also had a fair amount of blood -- blood stains on the sheets, the walls, the towels -- and what looked to be a large amount of encrusted vomit on the carpet. The room smelled strongly of mothballs. As far as security goes, my in-room safe didn't work and there is a prominent sign on the door stating unreassuringly that the hotel is not responsible for stolen belongings. Keys left at reception are kept out on the desk within grabbing distance of anyone passing by, even when the reception area is unstaffed (often). I kept my key with me when I went out. If you are looking for a seedy dump in Patong, then the Expat should be at the top of your list. For everyone else, there are exponentially better options in town and for less money.
This place is a dive!
from Matt_Newbury_UK
i stayed at this dump for a night as i had read reviews saying it was good for location etc. The staff seemed friendly enough but the rooms are horrible. There are mosies everywhere, the beds are hard, the sheet are about 15 years old and they put those white things you usally find in urinals everywhere, so all your clothes stink. After 1 night i had to get all my stuff washed. Do yourself a favour and stay in the amata resort which is brand new and just down the road. The room at the amata was 1200 per night and They charge a joiner fee of 500 baht but not if you check in with someone.

Avoid the Expat
from Boof2412
I booked this hotel via wotif.com, for one night while in transit in Patong Beach, phuket. Many travel guides reccomend it as a budget option. Central location, and photos look promising. There is a small pool etc. However, this Hotel has to be one of the few that survived the Tsunami. The rooms smell of mothballs, there are mosquitos everywhere, and stray cats roam the pool area. The hotel is full of old english guys with their thai girlfriends. I would definitely avoid this hotel.
Good value for money but with problems
from DaveThePubsinger
The ExPat hotel is a small hotel with rooms situated on 2-3 floors around a small swimming pool. It is in a very good (surprisingly quiet) location close to all the activity of the Bangla Road and a short walk to the beach. Our room was a “deluxe room” on the ground floor room with air-conditioning, ceiling fan, fridge/mini-bar, TV (with a selection of English speaking channels), comfortable bed, and a basic bathroom (hot water electric shower but no plug for the sink and no shower curtain). Towels and bed linen were changed daily (even on New Year’s Day!). There was a cupboard with a reasonable amount of hanging space (lots of hangers) but no decent sized drawer space. A room safe was available free of charge. We had a small patio with a table and two chairs but no drying facilities inside or out. The pool area was very pleasant with plenty of (free) sunbeds and seating areas and there was a reasonably priced onsite restaurant and bar (but beware - happy hour often seemed to end before the stated times after you'd already ordered another drink!) All in all this hotel provided clean, basic accommodation and the only thing that let it down were the erratic power-cuts (we had 4 in one week), some of which lasted several hours and which of course meant the fan and air-con didn’t work - in temperatures of 35 degrees plus this would put me off staying at the ExPat hotel again.
In urgent need of a refit
from summertimeLondonUK
Don’t stay at this hotel, they have trouble with their booking computer. When I was there I was thrown out of my room with 10 minutes notice because his room was double booked. I asked for help finding a similar hotel and was told by the manager he was too busy to help and it was my problem. On another note I found the actual hotel very disappointing, it is clearly in need of a major refit. The pool area is overgrown and the actual pool was dirty with dead insects floating in it. One night when I was walking to the hotel along the dark alleyway that leads to the hotel from the main road I was surrounded by people demanding money. Very frightening.
Top floor in the expat
from BigBuddha101
2 Aussie guys from Gove N.T We work 4 weeks on and 1 week off, I think we had room 30 and 31, right in the top corner of the hotel. Great quiet position, so you can sleep in after the big night out. Very close to everything, the beds could be abit softer, but all in all, a top spot for the money. The pool area is a bonus and all the staff are very friendly, no charge for any overnight staying guests.
Little sleepy inn at the end of the soi
from caliduuude
Wow, when you find a place that serves your needs, you want to tell everyone. If you're a single guy travelling thru Phuket and want to get close to the action, but not too close, this is the best place for you. The room was very nice, Iceberg cold A/C, nice little mini fridge stocked with everything and very cheap prices. A great restaurant with room service, and a cozy bar on the property. great pool and superb staff.they'll pick you up from the airport too. the place has a whole lot of plusses going for it. my only negative comment that i can make about the Ex-Pat Hotel is that there is only a few cable channels available on the TV, but then again I'm not there to watch TV.
