Firstly we had a great two week...

"Firstly we had a great two week holiday with great weather, though at times very breezy.

Apartments were clean and spacious, but the resorts too far out.25 min walk to Alvor about an hour to Prai da Rocha. Yes a taxi was only about 5 euro but if you do this a couple of times a day over a two week period it soon mounts up.Taxi tend to charge what they feel like we never once paid the same amount for the same journey. Plus taxi drivers didn't like giving you your change back, many would just give you the notes back and not the coins !

Potugal itself is not a very pretty country very urban and just full of hotels. Some areas were very run down.

Prai do vau beach was very beautiful and well worth a visit.

Had some very nice meals you can eat very cheaply or more expensive.

Can't say i would go bact to Portugal in a hurry, its ok but thats all.

Just back from a 2 week stay at...

"Just back from a 2 week stay at Vitors Plaza with my wife and 2 daughters aged 8 and 4.

The Good

- Apartments are clean and large.

- First Choice kids club reps (Sam, Avril, Ashling) were excellent and my 2 girls had a ball with them.

- Alvor is a beautiful village and we never once had a bad meal over the course of the holiday.

The Bad

- Sunbed allocation was a complete joke and pretty much was the main talking point and bone of contention within the complex. The beds were stacked and locked at night by the maintenance staff and to get a bed, guests started to arrive at the pool from 07:45 in the morning. The beds were not released until 10am for our first week which meant missing breakfast. Also the maintenance guys once they unlocked the beds insisted on allocating beds to umbrellas, if you needed more than 2 beds TOUGH! It almost resulted in arguments amongst guests for beds and left a pretty bad atmosphere. It got so bad guests decided to approach their reps who in turn agreed with Management to have beds available by 9am. Not my idea of a holiday setting an alarm for 7:30 each morning.

- Entertainment was pretty woeful. The entertainer Vera mentioned in so many previous reviews has now left the complex and talking to guests who were on their 2nd or 3rd visit is sorely missed. Mr Ego (Chico) himself was at times more interested in chatting up a blonde single mum by the pool rather than entertain the kids. I don’t expect Broadway but for a complex located with nothing around the standard needs to improve.

- On-site shop is a complete rip off. Apparently as soon as the UK schools broke up prices were increased by anything between 20 and 50%. The complex knows well you are in a remote area so have guests by the short and curleys in terms of prices. There is a shop 8-10mins walk away but most guests don’t want to haul bottles of water for that length of time. Some price comparisons below to the local shop to give you an idea.

On site shop Local shop

1 Litre bottle of water: €1.70 €0.70c

Can of Coke, 7up etc: €1.20 €0.50c

Can local Beer (Super Bock): €2.00 €1.00

Also, the essentials such as bread, milk, butter etc were in some cases more than 50% cheaper in the local shop. Also be aware for every glass you break in the apartment a €1.10 charge will apply on departure.

At night time the on-site bar was very expensive also - €5.40 for a bottle of Magners and Budweiser etc. was significantly higher than bars in Alvor and Praia Da Rocha.

The Ear Infections

A huge amount of ear infections from the pool including our own daughter on day 3 of the holiday. Trip to the hospital, dose of anti-biotic, wax ear plugs and a cost €80 put it right. It’s no exaggeration to say almost every family had at least 1 of their party suffer including one man with a perforated ear drum. Having sat and watched the pool being cleaned each morning I’m not surprised. The sunbed areas were hosed every 3rd morning, problem was the guy hosed the dirt into and towards the pool and not the gutters. He then proceeded to sweep the sunbed area with a tiny dust pan and brush. Waste of time. The pool was hoovered most mornings but there was an obvious problem with the water quality. Again guests got together on the first week to approach their tour operators who advised an independent assessment would be carried out by First Choice and Thompson....needless to say this never happened and we were fobbed off.

The above review probably reads quite negative but nowhere is perfect and I thought it important following so many positive reviews to point out the negatives so reviewers can make a fully informed decision prior to booking. Apart from the above we had a great holiday, met some great people and were blessed with glorious weather for the duration of our stay. While we loved Portugal in particular Alvor, but wont be returning to Vitors anytime soon.

We read all of the reviews before...

"We read all of the reviews before booking our holiday and can honestly say that we are in agreement with all. Upon arriving we were greeted by very helpful reception staff and given the key to our room. Unfortunately when we went to the room the bathroom stank of old mould. I am not normally one to complain but on this occasion I decided I really did not want to stomach the smell for a week. The reception staff were brilliant and were able to change our room immediately which actually worked to our advantage because we then had a pool view. Unfortunate for people flying in that night as they had a room which overlooked the car park! Also, in high season if you are in Block A which we were you will probably incur some noise due to the fact that you are above the bar area. Although at night the bar is downstairs where the entertainment is people can still have drinks on the terrace

The First choice kids club was well run and although my daughter could have gone she is a little shy but the girls seemed very good at their jobs. However, if your child didn't go to the kids club there always seemed to be a member of the hotel entertainment team coming round seeing who wanted to play crazy golf, water polo, tennis etc. All in all the entertainment was there if you wanted it but you were not pushed into anything.

If you stay local to eat then Big Reds is a must. The food is absolutely fantastic - myself and my husband had surf and turf and they also did a good children's menu. However, a visit to Alvor is an absolute must! a pretty Portuguese village where fresh fish was cooked on a bar-b-que at the harbour. If you have young another restaurant to try is the chinese which is situated as soon as you get dropped off at the taxi rank. The food is first class and they have a small play area which only consists of a couple of play houses but it enabled us to have a wonderful meal in peace as our daughter found a little boy to play with and then they sat at a seperate table and played with the drawing things etc. that we had brought along with us.

All in all I can thoroughly recommend Vitors, however would possibly book independently next time so that we could stay nearer to Alvor town.

Great holiday, but be warned, 1 week...

"Great holiday, but be warned, 1 week was not enough - time flew by. Apartments were spacious, clean and well equipped. Swimming pools were great and my 3 children (3, 7 and 8yrs) absolutely loved the evening entertainment and kids club. They also enjoyed the mini/crazy golf (only 4 euros) and small playground. Don't be disappointed if you don't get a pool view balcony because my apartment overlooked the car park but beyond that is countryside so it was lovely and peaceful to sit out with glass of wine in the evening.

The on-site mini market was handy, creme croissaints and pastries were delicious and reasonable but be aware that a box of cereal was nearly 4 euros! Things like coffee/tea/jam were also expensive. We often ate at the snack bar, the pizza's, salads and omlettes were delicious.

The trip to ZooMarine is a must - dolphin show, birds of prey, pools, water rapid ride and fun-fair rides - not to mention 4-D cinema - only took about 40 minutes on coach.

I felt very safe staying there, there were CCTV cameras and the staff were really helpful, friendly and professional. The only reason I would consider not going again next year is the distance to the lovely beaches. Overall a wonderful holiday and I would highly recommend.

Booked at the last minute and wanted...

"Booked at the last minute and wanted somewhere family orientated. We had never been to the Algarve before and to be honest it wasn't our first choice, but we got a good deal so we gave it a try. The apartment was very clean and well equipped and all the staff seemed friendly throughout the stay. The only downside we found was that the apartment blocks echo a lot whenever someone closes a door or wears heels. All the surfaces are tiled so not surprising really. Maid service was fine, very happy with the accommodation and would stay there again without hesitation.

It's a good 30 minutes walk down to the beach or about 3-4 euros for a taxi. We walked it every day as we didn't mind the exercise and we were in no rush. The nearest beach is at Praia do Vau. It's used a lot by the locals and as such was very relaxed, the Portuguese are very family concious and polite. The hotel also runs a courtesy bus to the beaches at Praia do Rocha and Praia do Vau, but we never bothered with it.

We ate a few times at The Jacaranda restaurant by the beach, very good food at reasonable prices. I can recommend the fried bread with the English Breakfast. Again, the people are all friendly and helpful.

Alvor itself is a lovely, unspoilt fishing village which we found very relaxing. It's a bit further than the beach and worth getting a taxi. The reception desk will order one for you and the trip will cost 5 euros, if you wait for one to turn up at the hotel ( which they frequently do) it's at least 1 euro cheaper!

Overall I would thoroughly recommend both the hotel and the area if you are looking for a quieter, family holiday.

We have just returned from Vitos...

"We have just returned from Vitos Plaza, my husband, 6 year old daughter and myself. We had a fantastic time and everything I read about and was promised came through. The apartment was large and very clean. The staff are really helpful and reps are there every day. The kids club was brilliant and food lovely. The only negative thing I can say is that we went for half board and felt a little cheated as the breakfast was continental and on an evening you could only choose from two things from the menu. Childrens menu was not very good only burgers, fish fingers, ect ... Saying that, the staff are really really good. They make you feel at home and they cannot do enough for you. We are thinking about going back next year only self catering, gives you more options and freedom. Pack extra sun cream the weather is so hot, the on site shop is expensive but handy for emergency. We went on the Gypsy market trip, which was disappointing. We were on the bus for over two hours ( We found out later it's only 30 min drive, the rest of the time we were picking up other passengers) At the market my husband was approached every step or so asking if he wanted any drugs or rolex watch. We found the goods to be what you can find in shops but not very good quality. If you go don't miss Alvor the nearest town, costs around 4 euro's in a taxi and really really beautiful. The hotel entertainment team are funny and the bar downstairs does get full. Kids have their mini disco, then can go next door to the mini club to watch a dvd or play. Gives you chance to have a conversation with your other half. All in all the best holiday we have been to. They boast home from home and they are as close as you can get."

Returned a week ago from a fortnight...

"Returned a week ago from a fortnight stay at Vitor's Plaza and never have I ever stayed in such a clean, spacious apartment. The rooms were equipped with everything from iron & ironing board to microwave and tea towels. I went with my husband and two daughters (aged 17 and 13) and we all enjoyed it thoroughly. The only reason I have not give this a 10 is because of the location..it's a little bit too far out from everything. Other than that, a fantastic holiday!"

Had a brilliant time. Myself, husband...

"Had a brilliant time. Myself, husband and two sons aged 5 and 7. Weather was better than expected with only one cloudy day. Apartments are big and spotless and fully equipped with everything you could need including microwave, washing line, loads of plates, cups etc - even tea towels. We had a corner apartment with two huge balconies. Daytime spent mostly by the pool with a couple of trips to the beaches. First trip was to Vau beach (lovely but no sunbeds so bring a mat if you have one) but chose to go on sunday when courtesy bus does not operate so long half hour walk (would be quicker if you have no kids with you!). Walk back was harder as is was so hot. Second time we went to beach we waited for courtesy bus but there were about 40 people waiting and bus only held about 7 or 8 so we took a taxi to Praia da rocha beach - absolutely stunning with tons of sunbeds for hire (€10 for two beds and an umbrella). Pool at apartments was freezing and deep most the way round so not suitable for kids only learning to swim. Kids pool was shallow but kept them cool. Indoor pool was heated and half shallow half deep - kids are not allowed during summer months. Apartment run kids club was brilliant - our pair were taken off to play football, dodgeball etc at various times. They also went to the First Choice Kids club on a couple of occasions. The evening entertainment was ok. The kids had a short disco then they were taken off to another room next door to play, watch movies etc. They weren't overly supervised there so were able to pop into us for drinks etc if they wanted them. Be prepared to be dragged on stage to perform in various party games during the evening. The best night was the quiz night which we won - it was hilarious to see grown adults fighting to sit in the hotseat to answer the questions. Another good night was the Mr Vitors Plaza competition where the men were dressed as women and set a number of challenges such as dancing with a man of their choice, taking part in a mini play, guessing which woman was their wife etc. I cried with laughter at times - and my husband won - I am still not sure if this was a good thing or not. The only downside is that the entertainment is in a room downstairs under the apartments - I would imagine it gets very hot and packed in high season. The entertainment team (Rui, Nuno and Rossana) were fantastic - great fun and with endless energy - they even came to the apartments on their day off to see us off as we headed back to Ireland. There were plenty of beds around the pool during the day although this might not be the case in very high season. There is a good cafe/beach bar serving fast food, pancakes, pizzas etc during the day. The onsite shop is fine if you are staying for a week and plan on eating out each night - you can take a taxi to Lidl or Aldi if you need more variety. It also stocks everything from bikinis and inflatable beach toys, to suntan lotion, toiletries, quite a good variety of foods and lovely fresh bread and cakes as well as newspapers, ice pops and drinks. You can also hire matresses for the sunbeds. There is a small library area in reception where you can leave or take books/magazines. A games room beside the shop had snooker tables, table football, video games etc and is open till 11. Reception is open at all times and you can book tours, check bus times etc. There are two PCs with internet access too so you can check train times etc. We ate breakfast in the main restaurant on our first day but didn't use it apart from that - the service was excellent and the prices seemed quite reasonable too. The apartments are amongst the best we have stayed in - the only downside is the location - you really do have to get taxis everywhere and there is nowhere to go for a walk during the day. The nearby town of Alvor is lovely - quite small but with a great buzz. Loads of seafood restaurants - we found the ones nearest the harbour area to be a bit posh and more expensive. However there is one just near the front with a huge barbeque outside and painted wooden chairs that was fantastic. Also on the promenade between Portimao Marina and Praia Da Rocha there are about thirty restaurants housed in pod-like structures. We chose one at random and it was fantastic so give them a go. Portimao was ok - we went in a bit too late to avail of the shopping but heard that it was quite good. We took the train into Faro on the only overcast day and had a fantastic time - there is a great pedestrianised shopping area, a kids playground, a church with a chapel made from the skulls and bones of priests and monks from the past, two very good museums, and a lovely marina area. Lots of nice coffee shops and restaurants and a great atmosphere overall. It cost about €30 for the four of us return on the train from Portimao - check the timetables on www.CP.pt. All in all a great holiday and would definitely recommend vitors plaza. Note - you have to give a €100 deposit on arrival to cover breakages etc (you can use a credit card for this if you wish)."

All I can say is I agree with...

"All I can say is I agree with everyone elses's views on these apartments. They are so clean and spacious. The staff are fantastic, extremely friendly & accomodating. The weather was great when we were there. It was myself, my mum and my daughter who is 4 (left the men at home!) My daughter was very impressed by the evening entertainment, the team were very impressive she loved every minute of it, we are still hearing about it now!

Highly recommend the hotel restaurant, it is a bit more expensive than others outside the complex but still not as expensive as we pay at home.

Very highly recommended, will return ASAP!

Having just arrived back from a week...

"Having just arrived back from a week at Vitor's Plaza we can't stop talking about our holiday. I have never stayed in such a clean and friendly place where the staff are so obliging.

We went as a couple and thoroughly enjoyed the spacious apartment and all the facilities that Vitor's has to offer. The outdoor pool was cold only to be expected at this time of year but the indoor pool was a good alternative.

Alvor is perhaps one of the best places we've ever been to for entertainment in the evenings. So many restaurants to choose from and all very reasonably priced. We ate out at a different place each night and never had a bad meal. Who needs an oven or grill in the room?

At 10.00pm there is musical entertainment in most places but especially the Irish pubs.

Taxis are readily available, buses (Line 10) run on a regular basis and both are cheap to use.

The local beaches are superb, sandy and most have lifeguards. Above all they have plenty of snack bars within a few metres walk.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and will return in the near future.
