We have just returned from a holiday...

We have just returned from a holiday at Valmangude Jardim apartments in Albufeira. We have 2 children (11+9).We do not have a great deal of money, so we were placed a lot of hope on this holiday and I have to say that we can't wait to go back.
We booked the holiday on the advice of a friend and were a bit nervous after reading several horror stories about dirty apartments and rude staff, horrific noise levels, lager louts etc, etc. We arrived in the morning and the gardens looked absolutely fantastic and spotlessly clean. The pool was clean and had no sand or rubbish in or around (unlike some reports have said).
The staff in the pool bar are friendly and helpful and it has satellite TV in their as well as in the reception foyer. If you want the TV in the room it is about 15 euros for the week, but we didn’t bother. The only down side was waiting for apartments to be cleaned, but we were there at 11:15 am and the check in time is 3pm, just like here really, but that is down to First Choice not telling you, not the apartments management.
There are safety deposit boxes which are about 12 Euros for the week (£10) ish, with and equal amount as returnable deposit. There was entertainment every night, but the only ones we stayed in for were. A parrot show and the Karaoke on Tuesday and Saturday - These were fantastic fun. We did not have any noise from the strip as reported by others and no lager louts. There is a bakery a few hundred yards away and a mini market a hundred yards further.
a couple of hundreds yards on again is a Supermarket on the left by the "Worms" and this is called "PLUS". Its very cheap indeed and the staff are very friendly, as are all of the Portuguese people. If you make your way to the Strip, there is nothing to fear. Lots of bars and shops and restaurants. Not laden with nightclubs as written previously and obviously busier the further into the season you go. For families, I recommend April, May and October.
Halfway down the strip on the right hand side there is a restaurant called Restaurante Ramos. You will not find better food or friendlier staff or better value for money. We found it with Four days to go and went Four times. They are fantastic. Great with the kids and very warm and welcoming. we ate inside and not outside. They seem to like when people come into the main restaurant. Great holiday, great location, great beach (1km walk or 3 euros taxi ride).
Zoomarine and jeep safari are well worth doing. We swam with Dolphins! Don’t go looking for breakfast outside of these apartments - nowhere is cheaper - 2.5 euros each for full English, and the food is great.

Had two weeks at the Valmangude...

Apr 2006, Mrs B Fowler

Had two weeks at the Valmangude Jardim apartments in Albufeira. We had a great holiday. The apartments were clean. The pool was clean. The staff were friendly and helpful. The Pool cafe did good meals. It was close enough to walk to the old town or to the strip (but far enough from the strip not to hear the noise). There were loads of places to eat for 6 euros, beautiful beaches, loads to do.
It was fairly easy to visit Faro, Lagos, Portimao, Villamora by bus from the bus station (would suggest you take a taxi to the bus station, it only costs 4 euros)
The full day organised trip "Best of the West" was good value.
Unfortunately the old town was being dug up to do drainage/repaving but the front and the beach were untouched.
As a family we would recommend a holiday at the Valmangude Jardim apartments.

The Resort is awful, full of lager...

The Resort is awful, full of lager louts who have nothing better to do on their holiday then get drunk. The place is ugly too, turn down the wrong street and it feels like you are in bay route! There is graffiti everywhere, and the smell of the bins and grids is unbearable.
The only plus side is the beach, that is lovely. Well worth watching the sun set over the old town.
We preferred the old town to the strip. The strip is very much like Blackpool, dirty and full of dodgy bars. The old town is more typically Portuguese, but once again, stick the main areas.
Now the Apartments. They are dirty and the staff were totally rude and unhelpful. We were placed in a room (204) where the patio door and the main door didn’t shut properly, and was over the bins. We asked for a move, and had to wait 2 days before they agreed. The next room we moved to (214), was only slightly better, at least the door shut! The maids do not clean very well, in fact all they do is sweep the floor and make the beds. The kitchen surface was not cleaned once during the 2 weeks of our holiday - seriously!
Also don’t ask for a wake up call. We and several other guests asked for one on our day of departure, this was not done. Their excuse was "I forgot".
I seriously wouldn’t recommend these apartments. They are surrounded by 3 very, very busy roads, and it is very difficult to sleep (along with having lumpy pillows). Also groups of drunken lads walk past singing until way past 5am.
Also the swimming pool, was dirt, there was sand covering the bottom of it, and that was there for the whole 2 weeks. We spent most of the time at the beach.
I wouldn’t recommend the reps trips either, went to Seville (the shops closed until 5.30pm for Siesta just as we got there), Jeep Safari (jeeps are not open top, and drive on the normal roads), first choice fun cruise (secluded beach was a busy beach full of litter, and the barbeque was abysmal).

This holiday resort is for families...
9 / 10
Jun 2005, Mrs Z Sterling

This holiday resort is for families and party goers alike. There is plenty of fun, water sports by the beautiful yellow sandy beaches.
Many activities to do, a week is not enough. Horse riding, jeep safari, boat trips, gypsy markets, etc.. Shopping is great with lots of gifts to choose from. Eating out is easy with English meals as well as Portuguese, Chinese, Thai, and lots of others.
Accommodation, best choosing 3 star or above. Natives are very friendly and accommodating. Very modern with indoor shopping complexes, plenty of supermarkets. Cheap drinks in supermarkets, but drinks in the pubs and bars is about the same as UK prices. Some bargains to be had, but some things are a bit expensive.
Beaches - lovely sand, lovely sea, great caves and stuff.
Nightlife: Buzzing for all clubbers.

Brilliant. After a mini tour, which...

May 2005, Miss J Bibbings

Brilliant. After a mini tour, which was the journey from Faro Airport to Valmangude, we were pleasantly surprised at the first impression we got of the apartments.
They are a short walk from both old town Albufeira and the main 'Strip' and not too far from a few beaches.
The reception/bar area was light, airy and extremely clean and the staff were welcoming. Our apartment was on the ground floor, with patio doors leading on to the pool.
This apartment, self-catering, was well set out and very spacious. Everything we needed for a self-catering holiday was supplied. Our first impression was of how clean it was. This first impression stayed for the entire stay. The Valmagude Jardim is cleaned every day. It was spotless.
The staff, who were all extremely friendly, from the maintenance man/pool man to the cleaners to the receptionist to the bar staff seemed all to be on a mission to work in the cleanest, tidiest, friendliest hotel in Portugal. They really appeared to take pride in their place of work.
The pool bar has a very good menu including full English breakfast, which came with English sausage and bacon! All the portions were large and freshly cooked to order.
We could not find fault at all which is why we had to rate it overall as a 10.
