Not the best of hotels I've stayed at. In fact whilst staying here I bought week 33 (mid August) of a 1 bed timeshare at Porto Mare Residence!
This was mine and my partner's 1st trip to Madeira and as we booked about 8 weeks before leaving, we wanted somewhere cheap; as long as it had a pool. It was a very basic hotel. All the rooms had en suite facilities, twin beds, a wardrobe and a dressing table. The pool was questionable. When we were there it seemed murky. I did swim in it as thought it was me being paranoid. The food was okay. We bought on a room only but ate at the hotel about 3/4 times we were there.
On the final night we ate at the hotel. BIG MISTAKE! I became ill within two hours, which gradually worsened. It was a relief to be going home the next day as within 36 hours of landing on British soil, I was seriously ill in hospital with Colitis where I stayed for a week and took me a month to recuperate.
I know some people gave this hotel a glowing report. The hotel itself is fine, basic, but adequate for many people. Unfortunately I had a particularly bad experience whilst ending my stay there that I would not like to repeat!

I recently spent a week at the Vila Camacho in Funchal on half board and I have to say it was the best package deal holiday I have ever had.
The Vila is a small residential hotel overlooking the Bay of Funchal and although there was building work next door, the general ambience of this lovely little hotel was charming. The staff were extremely courteous and attentive, yet unobtrusive, arriving at just the right moment to politely remove plates etc from your table.
The home-cooked food was delicious with a splendid variation each evening for the "specials", although half board residents could also choose from the a la carte menu. The continental breakfast was more than adequate with some optional extras for a small fee if you so desired. Mostly, we were able to enjoy our meals on the delightful garden terrace but the Flame restaurant was equally charming when the weather demanded a warmer venue.
On site were a husband and wife team, who performed the music on three of the evenings. This was delightful with a piano accordion and electric piano proving the perfect accompaniment to the evening meal. The musicians doubled as the resident masseurs during the day.
The Vila was ideally placed for a walk down to Funchal and bus rides through mountain villages. The bus stop is just down the road and a taxi ride back from town did not break the bank if you had run out of steam. Although I had read previous reviews stating that there were 25 steps up to the hotel, these did not prove demanding, even after long walks during the day.
On the last day, we had a swim in the pool, which is not heated and took our breath away but this added to the fun and there was a hot shower awaiting in our room.
I would definitely return to this very special hotel and would recommend it to anyone who wanted a quiet, pleasant break, no noisy nightlife and that all too rare commodity, common courtesy.

The Villa Camacho is a good base for anyone looking for a clean, comfortable and quiet base to rest their head at the end of the day.
ROOMS - the rooms are compact but have everything you need (bed, shower, toilet, telephone). Rooms are cleaned, beds made and fresh towels delivered everyday.
RESTAURANT - the food is tasty and reasonably priced, though the portions are quite small and if you want to sample the specials you have to dine early before it's all gone. I would recommend O'Tonel's (come out of the hotel, cross the road, take the first set of steps down and and it's part way down on the right hand side) or Arsenios (old town).
STAFF - The staff were efficient and courteous but I wouldn't say they were particularly friendly. However, if you want just to be left alone it's ideal.
OTHER GUESTS - the majority of the guests during our stay were British and German, aged 40+.
TRANSPORT - You can catch the No. 45 bus right outside the hotel which will take you into Funchal. Alternatively, if you walk up the hill to Nazarre (about 10 mins walk) you can catch the No. 48 to Monte. The bus fare is always €1.80, or you can by a pass. It is possible to walk to Funchal (30 mins) but I wouldn't recommend the walk back as it is all up hill. There is also a taxi office opposite the hotel.
SHOPS & SERVICES - Up the hill in Nazarre (approx 10 mins walk - look for the modern clock tower located behind the hotels) is a supermarket, pharmacy and bank. The nearest bakery we found was down the steps opposite the hotel on the way to the Lido area.
ENTERTAINMENT - There was no entertainment laid on during our stay though it was advertised for the night of our departure. O'Tonels had live music the night we were there.
BEWARE COMPS - We were caught out a couple of times by things that appeared to be complimentary but then showed up on our bill. The first is the bottled water handed out on arrival which showed up on our final bill as an extra €4 (it only costs 29c at the shop!). The second was the Madeiran wine ready-poured and offered as an apperitif on sitting down to eat - an extra €7. Small but irritating.
BEWARE REPS - Also watch out for people approaching you as if they were a fellow tourist - they could turn out to be a rep. We ended up booking a tour after meeting a very friendly german lady in the old town who promised small, personal tours with a guide who spoke 9 languages. He did speak 9 languages but very badly and all at once!

This hotel is just out to make money out of visitors. Yes we booked a basic room but it really was basic and there was mould up high from the shower. The maids are the best staff at the hotel as our room was cleaned every day and we had fresh towels.
I did not find the staff friendly at all. They also took ages to serve the same breakfast each day (*although we were second class citizens having refused to upgrade by 12 eros each per day). They charge for hairdryers, safe, water so beware. Every breakfast (no change) was crusty rolls, one soft roll and two slices of bread with ham, garlic sausage and cheese (processed), watered down orange and weak tea and extremely strong coffee. Oh and you have one sachet of butter for all this unless you request more. I would warn anyone to think seriously before going here unless you are prepared to upgrade. If you do not upgrade you are taken across from the hotel to a small villa style house and you couldbe placed anywhere in there. Some nickname it the dungeon.
