Splendid Isolation
from bermb1
Travelling from Lisbon with a friend who lives ithere and who booked five nights in the Caloura Resort from may 21 through May 26 we arrived after a twenty minute drive from the main city Ponta delgada. We had booked two rooms and were given a triple room each withits own patio and a view of the ocean, The hotel has a really picturesque setting, perched on a volcanic cliff with magnificant views of the ocean complete with spectacular rainbows on rainy days. Nearby there is a beautiful small quiet beach with black sand and cliffs which have wonderful geological formations. The hotel grounds sport a wild terraced garden built with natuaral basalt rock and containing beautiful exotic plants. Everything is very well maintained. The hotel itself was comfortable clean and staff were excellent, speaking very good English and were extremely helpful and polite. Breakfast is the usual buffet and a buffet dinner was offered every evening at the very reasonable price of eighteen euro including local wine. The only disadvantage is that if you dont drive you are pretty much isolated as the local village has a vertiginous climb and does not really offer anything in the line of restaurants. So you need to taxi everywhere which adds to the cost. Local tours make their pick up in Ponta Delgada which is a twenty minute taxi ride and costs fifteen euro. Much better value for the non-drive is to hire your own driver at the cost of fourteen euro per hour. Ours was Nuno recommended by Antonio on reception and he did an excellent job driving, speaking edglish and explaining the wonders of this fabulous volcanic island. Just one tip. As you are confined to the hotel for eating stick with the dinner buffet. We were dissapointed with a la carte. At nightime there is a little bar on the second floor where you have an excellent view of the stars at night.
Absolutely amazing place

Location of this hotel is beautiful and everything in this hotel fits to that amazing view. Rooms have enough space and every room has it own sea view. Great breakfest and very helpful and nice personel. Probably best hotel i´ve ever visited.
Caloura is an Oasis but smoky!

My husband and I spent six nights at the Caloura Hotel Resort from April 20-27, 2007. We arrived on the island at 8 am with no sleep, and the hotel allowed us to check in as soon as we arrived, about 9, and enjoy their buffet breakfast, which was a nice gesture. We were promised a king size bed, but our room had two twins pushed together. No problem, the staff changed our room, and we got our king bed. The room was a little musty but we chalked that up to the slow season, and when we left the slider open, the room air cleared out just fine. The room was decent size, with a nice closet, suitcase stand, bureau, small table, 2 chairs, floor lamp, and two night tables. The bed was comfortable, and we never had to use heat or a/c but they have a thermostat right in the room. Our room was right next to the elevator - but we never heard it - and believe me, I hear everything, so they must have insulated the rooms well from the noise. All of the rooms have a balcony that faces the ocean. The property is situated on a bluff, with a short landscaped walk down to a nice overlook. Half of the rooms are also overlooking the pool, something to keep in mind if you request a specific room. We were on the other "quiet" side, which suited us. The dining room is situated with a panoramic view of the ocean and neighboring bluff - the Azores is a very dramatic landscape! Breakfast was almost identical every morning, but was a nice enough spread that you could create a unique breakfast for yourself each day. Offerings included locally produced yogurt, which is good, but the flavored ones are actually artificially flavored, so I chose the 'natural' and used my own fruit. There were always two homemade breads, wheat and white, for toasting, croissants, brioche, and the local round roll, which we loved. Local butter and cheeses, including a soft white spreadable cheese that was tasty for breakfast. They had sliced cheeses, one sliced meat selection, sliced tomatoes and cucumbers, peeled and quartered kiwis or oranges, a selection of jams and jellies that changed daily and honey (I didn't like the pumpkin jam), three cold cereals of the 'health food' type, scrambled eggs (cold and undercooked for me), bacon, local sausage, cold milk, hot milk, hot tea, strong hot coffee, o.j. and passion fruit juice. I didn't like the coffee - it was actually too strong for me, and I like it fairly strong. The breakfast buffet is included in your room rate, and we had it everyday. We had dinner only once at Caloura, since we were out and about every day and tried different restaurants. Caloura does a buffet for about 20 euros with house wine, which was decent. The food was OK, nothing really gourmet, but some unusual items, such as pureed chestnuts, and some different food combinations than standard American fare, so it was actually quite enjoyable. There was a cheese station with breads and crackers and spreads which were interesting, and a generous dessert buffet. My favorite dessert was something called Cassata, which my server said was cream, condensed milk, ground almonds, and crushed cookies, frozen and served like ice cream - Yum! Caloura was clean, reasonably modern, peaceful in the off season but I'm sure it's different in mid summer and the restaurant might be pretty crowded when they're full. My only major complaint was the cigarette smoke. The clientele is largely european and they all seem to smoke. There were no designated areas or rooms, which meant that you could usually detect smoke everywhere in the hotel. We were never there during the day, but the lobby was often smoky in the morning and evenings - sigh! I didn't notice much smoking in the dining room, but I think it is allowed, so you might keep that in mind if traveling during a busy season. I sent the hotel a nice long letter encouraging them to do something about the smoke situation so that non smokers would be happier and who knows, maybe they'll segregate the rooms somehow and make their inside public areas non smoking. Sao Miguel is a great place for hiking, driving around with maniacs on the road, exploring small coastal towns, trying some different and tasty fish - wreckfish, stone bass. Restaurants we'd recommend are Ala Bote in Ribeira Grande, and Restaurant S. Pedro in Ponta Delgada, who gave me a DVD of Sao Miguel, nice touch on our first night.
Beautiful hotel

Beautiful views from the balconies, pool area, and restaurant. Great buffet breakfast. Good dinner buffet, including water, wine , a variety of food, and desserts. Nice pool and good size rooms and bathrooms.
Great location, views are wonderful

We stayed in the Hotel Caloura at the back end of an island hopping trip in mid March. The hotel is wonderfully located on the coast in a small bay, the rooms are spotless and all face the sea. The staff were excellent and extremely helpful. Breakfast and dinner were top class- great variety and the food was very fresh. The only small point I would make is that it's a bit of a walk up to Villa Nova de Campo if you want some local cuisine and colour. Still it's a lovely location for rest and relaxation in wonderful surroundings.

Great hotel with excellent views

Caloura Resort is located on a really beautiful spot right on the seaside cliffs. Hotel rooms are very clean and all have terrace/balcony. The swimming pool offers beatiful views to the Atlantic ocean and you can get refreshments from the snack bar. There are two restaurants and one bar in this hotel, which is nice as the walk to the near by village Aqua de Pau is very hard because Aqua de Pau is located on a hill compared to the hotel. Other problem with Aqua de Pau is that there are only two restaurants in the village. So you can use a taxi to go up the hill or take a taxi to Ponta Delgada and eat there. Renting a car is also a good option. There is also a semi-natural swimming pool near the hotel. Also many nice picnic spots around the hotel. I cannot recommend this hotel to people with small children or people with disabilities because it´s difficult to move around from this hotel if you dont have a car. But if you do, then the hotel is good for anyone at all. (Some people have even seen whales from the hotels restaurant, we unfortunately did not)
Good quality and service
from Edoel
Spacious rooms, all with beautiful view at the sea. I recommend the buffet in the restaurant. It costs 20 euros and includes wine, beer, water, soft drinks. The quality of the food is very good, the staff is very friendly, rooms are clean. About 20 minutes drive from the airport. There are 2 golf courses on the island. Driving time is about 20 minutes for Batalha and 40 minutes to Furnas. Both courses are very nice.
Great scenery

My wife and I stayed at Hotel Caloura from July 26 to August 2, 2006 and we really loved it there. The rooms were very clean and spacious and all have balcanies with a wonderful view of the ocean and mountains. The food and service was first class. This is not an all inclusive, however breakfast is included. The lunch or dinner buffet cost 20E but includes all drinks. Even when busy someone was always quick to fill my wine glass. In my opinion, well worth the money. This hotel is somewhat secluded and it took my wife and I 20 minutes to walk (uphill) from the hotel to the main road( if you wanted to go to the supermarket or bus stop.) We didn't mind the walk because it was so peaceful and beautiful. If you are not able to handle long walks then I suggest renting a car or stay somewhere in Ponta Delgada. Lastly, the pool is great with plenty of benches and towels, however the nearby beach is small and you will need water shoes because it is rocky. I still loved swimming there, fun being around the locals and watching the kids dive off the rocks. If you want a better beach than the Bahia is a better choice however if you want peace, tranquility, and scenery then stay in Caloura you will not be disapointed.

We thought we would try somewhere different. This certainly was. The Azores are a group of Islands in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean belonging to the Portuguese. The Island that we stayed on was Sao Miguel it was truly beautiful, very green and exploding with the most... more
