" We thought we would try somewhere... "

We thought we would try somewhere different. This certainly was. The Azores are a group of Islands in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean belonging to the Portuguese.

The Island that we stayed on was Sao Miguel it was truly beautiful, very green and exploding with the most beautiful flowers everywhere. The people were extremely friendly and helpful. We stayed in the Hotel Coloura in Agua De Pau, about a half hour drive from the airport.

The hotel was superb, the rooms were immaculately clean with en-suite bathrooms with bath and shower and hairdryer. The views from all the hotel rooms are of the sea and the gardens down to the rocky beach. There is a lovely sandy beach a five minute stroll away.

This is not a place to visit if you have walking difficulties, as it is very steep and hilly. I would not also recommend this particular hotel for small children it seems to be more suitable for couples or more mature people.

The food was very good and extremely plentiful and also very very good value for money, a main meal (buffet) in the evening was 20 Euros including wine, and you could also eat a'la carte if you wanted too.

The bar was a very pleasant place to sit in after dinner and the staff there were very friendly and helpful. There is not much to do in the evenings except to sit and chat, but we were usually too tired to do much else as we did a lot of walking and swimming. You can also go Whale and Dolphin watching which we did and it was great fun, we saw 2 Whales and 3 types of Dolphin.

Visiting the Calderas is a must (they are the volcano craters) they are truly an awesome sight not to be missed. Hire a taxi for an hour or two it is far cheaper than an organised trip and the driver will tell you all about the sights and will also stop for photos if you wish.

There is also plenty of opportunity to dive as there is a PADI diving school situated at the hotel.
