I just came back from the Royal Sun in Santa Susanna on Wednesday and had a fantastic time. I went with my boyfriend and although it’s clearly a family / older people resort we had a blast.
The food is fab and plenty of it all day. All inclusive drink choice is amazing - you only pay for named imported drinks but the measures are so huge of the local stuff your better off drinking that anyway. The only thing you have to pay for (if you’re all inc) is the game machines and crisps, only 1euro per bag and they are lovely.
The linen, rooms and towels were cleaned/changed daily and there is a TV in the room with MTV and BBC2 (the rest are in Spanish) the shower is great, nice and powerful and warm not like some of the cold dribbles I’ve had to put up with in the past.
There is a TV room and internet in the reception. The pool is great and there's also a 'kids pool' on the upper layer which is all shallow which is great for your boyfriend who cant swim!
The sun is better up there too. It was approx 28degrees all week but there was a much appreciated light breeze about 3pm.
The shops are good, I paid 60euros for a Louis Vitton and Gucci bag which seems a lot for fakes abroad but they look so real you would never tell ( there is only the 1 shop with such good fakes though and its on the middle of the boulevard)
There are shops and stalls everywhere that sells belts, wallets, hats, sunglasses, clothes etc and they are cheap as chips.
There are some really good bars too, the Tropicana bar is the best. You pay 10euros to get in but you get 2 drinks vouchers and a card to use for the duration of your holiday which also gives you 2 free drinks when you go in (so if you wanted you could just go in for your 2 drinks and move on!)
There is a bar called Waikiki that sell drinks by the litre, cocktails, or whatever for 5euros which is awesome.
The beach is right in front of the hotel with plenty of sun loungers and snack huts (but its literally a few metres in front of the hotel so if you’re all inc then you can go in and get a drink for free).
The only downside was that the hotel is so tall the sun goes behind it so you have to move about a bit about 1-2pm Also there were lots of older people there (60+) but they were never about in the day and were in the main room in the night so we just went outside to get away for a bit.
Enjoy your holiday we certainly did, so much that we are going back to Costa Brava in Sept, only this time to Pineda, we are confident that the quality and standard of the H Top hotels will match the Royal Sun.

I was a bit concerned about the reviews I had read because it appeared this hotel was like marmite, you either love it or hate it. For location it couldn't be beaten, straight from the hotel on to the beach. The warm welcome we received from reception set the scene for the week and we found the staff to be extremely friendly and helpful. (Apart from a certain bar man whose face may crack if he smiled).
We were quite fortunate that our tour operator had us delivered to the door, apparently, some refuse to do so because of the entry from the main road as they feel it is not suitable for coaches. The hotel runs a courtesy bus to Lloret de Mar each day. Whilst the resort is very quiet with regard to shops, we found that Malgrat was just a short walk away and had more to offer. The Tuesday market was a bit too much like the shops and seemed a bit pricey in comparison. There were ample loungers around the two pools, however, those on the beach are private at a fee of 4euros, our daughters used these and said they were the most comfortable they had ever used.
For those who are all inclusive, there is an opportunity to go to a Medieval evening for 11 euros bus fare, and a Cabaret Evening for 9 euros. This was definite value for money because the first cost 44 euros through the reps. I don't think it would have been value for money at that rate.
This hotel was most definitely to our taste, although I would imagine that those who prefer a livelier setting, with a more vigorous entertainment programme may be disappointed. We have decided that we will definitely return for another holiday.
The cost of the holiday through Fleetway travel, as opposed to brochure price was a fantastic offer, in fact, it was cheaper than some self catering holidays we have had. However, had we paid the considerable higher rate of a high street tour operator, I feel that I may be been disappointed.
One word of warning, any who travel by Ryan Air, watch the baggage, it is a measly 15kg, and they are strict on excess. Some in our check in queue thought that there would be a culmative weight, however, it is strictly per case only.

Claimed to be 4 stars it barely fits 2 or 3. Service is extremely bad.
Poor facilities and food. Staff is outstandingly insolent and unfriendly. Do not expect them changing used towels, bed linen or bringing shampoo into your room. Rooms are badly equipped, air condition, safe box and minibar don’t work. No hairdryers, no shampoo, no soap and sometimes even no paper.
The pool is small and has no warming. NO PARKING!! Hotel has about 10 parking places and all are taken by hotel staff. If you are asking about possible parking place in the area you'll be told that "this is YOUR PROBLEM" (!). Of course neither fitness nor sauna. Restaurant is claimed to work for 2 hours on breakfast and dinner, but actually there’s no food even a half hour after opening. And nobody worries to bring more.
The menu is the SAME for a week. Mostly junk food. DO not expect beef, lamb. They serve by "one kind". Meaning. every day’s same kind of pork, fish, cheese, salami, beans (?). No natural coffee or juice. One kind of beer, one kind of bread, one kind of marinades. That’s it. And even this you have to catch it time.
Finally, most terrible hotel I ever visited.
Good Luck.

Hotel Royal Sun is in a prime position on the beach. The Reception staff were very helpful on all issues, food was ok something for everyone, but did get a bit repetitive. Rooms were ok, quite clean, the hotel was an oasis in an otherwise grotty resort. It definitely wasn’t a 4 star though the towels and the bedding were quite old and thin, yes thin is the only word I can use to describe them. But for the last week in October the weather was lovely and we used the hotel as a base to travel out each day. Excellent train service to Barcelona and a lovely journey along the coast. All in all I would give this hotel a 7 rating. I wont however be going back.

Despite what other reviewers said - the hotel exceeded my expectations. Regarding the noise - the whole area of the beach is overwhelmed with crowd, but once you close your balcony door - you get complete silence.
The pictures of the hotel in the Internet do it injustice. The cleaning in the hotel is spotless. The staff is very helpful.
The pools are great, not too crowded. However, they are not heated and the water IS cold even during August.
The food is ok, but repetitive. I wouldn’t rate this hotel as a 4 stars hotel, but as a 3 start hotel.
We enjoyed our stay in this hotel. I recommend it to others.

If you’ve booked already - don’t worry - if you haven’t - don’t you will get better value for money.
The hotel is right on the beach, which is great although the sea quickly gets deep.
The hotel is clean and generally well maintained. The rooms are modern but small. Food is good although it lacks variety and becomes boring - antipasti, soup, meat, fish, vegetables and fruit. The deserts are not worth leaving a space for. The chips and potatoes are usually inedible - chips cold and potatoes hard.
Staff are pleasant enough but the bar is very understaffed. The hotel does not deserve 4* rating but is a solid 3*.
The poorest part of our stay was that the hotel offered nothing in terms of late check out - there was no secure place to leave luggage - no showers available except in a dungeon beside the pool - don’t use.
The hotel is in a noisy area and has a railway line at the back - not a great place for light sleepers. The railway provides a very cheap and reliable link with Barcelona - go yourself to the station Place Catalunya and forget the organised tour - the last train to Santa Susana is 22.38 Using the train you can see all the sights of Barcelona at only 5euro return.

My holiday at the Royal Sun, Santa Susanna was sold to me by Fleetway Travel and was the 'Royal' chain of hotels was described as the Spanish equivalent of the Hilton Group, it certainly was not! The flight with RyanAir was uneventful and quite smooth, and the pickup was prompt and well organised.
Despite the misrepresentation of the standard of the accommodation, it was a pleasant enough hotel with a main and a children’s pool, large bar with evening entertainment, main restaurant and beach bar. However, the rooms, particularly the decor, have definitely seen better days, the beds are typically European, with thin mattresses, the TV has very limited stations (unless you speak German) and the showers could be heard from the adjoining rooms. One of our party's room directly overlooked the children’s pool so it was therefore noisy all day, the kids were out from 7am some mornings, and there was little privacy, the other party had a room overlooking the front of the hotel so some noise could be heard from the train tracks.
The tracks are directly at the front of the hotel, and you need to cross a walkway to access the main strip, this is not particularly difficult but with my elderly mother in our party we found it a bit of a chore. My boyfriend is a teacher and so we are restricted to when we can take holidays, so even though this was described as a quiet resort suited to an older clientele frankly once school holidays break it was definitely a family/kids orientated place; The pool was jam packed from morning til evening with kids dive bombing, the bar with its amusements was always in use and noisy and if you wanted a quick look at your emails on one of the 2 internet connections (one of which always seemed to be out of action) then you would need the patience of a saint whilst all the kids checked their MSN Messenger!
The restaurant served breakfast, lunch and dinner with snacks in between, in theory there was a lot of variety but after day 5 we felt the repetition was nearly unbearable. Breakfast had the slight continental twist on an old fashioned fry up; frankfurter sausages, over salty bacon etc. And lunch and dinner was very similar every day with the only real variety in the main meat course being served. There was recycling of food from day to day too and the bread rolls were (9 times out of 10) hard! The usual bar waiter was an entertainingly grumpy fella, but many of the others were very polite and accommodating.
You will not be able to extend your check out time in peak season, we were told from the day we arrived to ask the next day, ask the next day, but on our departure date we were told it was not possible to extend, this is a pain if you are flying on the Girona - Luton flight, as you will not be collected until 7pm. The beach is lovely and right on the doorstep of the hotel. The main strip in Santa Susanna runs into the all the following resorts and is packed with tourist tat shops, bars, restaurants, clubs and after 10pm it is packed with kids going mad on cheap drink!
I wouldn't recommend the Medieval night if you have small children, it was fun and the food was ok, but the return journey is after midnight which we were not told, (I was told by the hotel it was a 10.30 finish) the reason the return journey is delayed is after the "all inclusive" show the organizers want you to spend money in their bar, the reps would not assist in getting one coach to leave early and the manager of the castle claimed to speak no English, he did manage to call one of the 2 taxi's in that village and we went back to the hotel.
A trip into Barcelona is highly recommended, the train station is a 10 minute walk away, you can get an all day pass for €12, which covers the trains and metro, it takes about an hour from Santa Susanna to Barcelona, and it is a very beautiful city, well worth the trip. In summary, this is a cheap and cheerful resort, which although we wouldn't return, we would recommend for families/young people after a lively nighttime.
