Just returned from a week's stay at Holliers Hotel, Shanklin. Was reluctant at first due to adverse reviews on this website about the hotel. So glad I ignored this because we have had a really great week staying there, the owners Steve and Dawn join in with everything:... more

This was a last minute booking and the only place that had rooms. It was quite pricey however it was peak season for a family room. The family room was nice but a little cramped it had tea and coffee making facilities and a nice little bathroom with a great view. The... more

Fantastic week
An absolutely fantastic week in a great hotel!!!! The hosts "Steve & Dawn" are a very likeable down to earth couple who made us feel very welcome. The receptionist Lou was very helpful and extremely knowledgeable about the best places to visit, eat/drink on the island. As for "Steve & Dawns" right hand man Russ well you couldn't wish to meet a nicer bloke. The room we were given had been recently re-furbished with a superb new bathroom and great "power shower". The bed was extremely comfortable and it was difficult to get out of it in the morning for breakfast. Now onto the wonderful food - The breakfast was very nice with a good "help yourself" service. The evening carvery was very tasteful with the meats on offer cooked to perfection. There was evening entertainment on a nightly basis in the piano bar. In particular look out for Simon Ledger & Joe Scott surely stars of the future. We were actually due to leave the hotel on Saturday the 21st however were having such a good time we stayed on until the following Tuesday. Both my wife and I has an excellent time and were extremely pleased with the accomodation, service and the aformentioned entertainment, we enjoyed ourselves so much that we've booked to go back for the new year. Thanks to Steve, Dawn, Lou, Russ and all the staff for making our holiday absolutely memorable.
Not to our liking
Hotel is a bit shabby the photo's you see are misleading. The piano bar is not a piano bar it is a noise machine, loud music every night. Receiption is almost always deserted. No bar service to speak of till 12.00 noon, no food service at all except for the carvery each night. Just hope you do not go when a wedding is on, you will not even be allowed to use the piano bar. The outdoor swimming pool was unusable, full of flies and leaves. The garden is a small field with a couple of old chairs. One of the access points was via a gate that had broken away from the wall and was dangerous. The path was over grown. Never take a room on ther first floor if you want an early night, you will not be able to sleep for the noise below. We did not find the hosts friendly at all, they did what they had to do and no more. The final insult was when i went down on the last day and asked if there was a reliable taxi service to book a cab. In most hotels they would offer to book one for you. Not Holliers, I was given a card, and told this is trhe only one I know of then left to do it myself.. Not good service. Nil points from me.. This place is for people who like it rough.
Lovely Hotel In Ideal Setting
Thank you to Steve & Dawn...and Ross! for the wonderful service and attention we received during our short stay at The Holliers Hotel. The food was delicious..and the idea of using alchohol gel before helping yourself to the carvery was an excellent idea. (A good idea for other hotels to take up perhaps?) The evening entertainment was fun..look out for Simon Ledger .. if you visit - a great all round entertainer - a future star !!! ( Sorry Simon ! ) Also Simon Spurr was brilliant and the lovely girl singers 'Sunny & Blue' too. It was great to see the staff also enjoying the evening entertainment..it was like a big family party every night, everyone was made welcome. Thank you also to the housekeeping ladies for making our room so nice...and sorting out the bathmat! Special thank you to Ross for the great service...and always with a smile...despite working all those long hours!! Steve & Dawn should put on a cabaret act with all those magic tricks! The separating of the two glasses without touching them was very clever ... if you want to see more we recommend a visit to The Holliers Hotel ! It was excellent.
Great Evening Entertainment
Just arrived back home from a fabulous long weekend at The Holliers. Although it was before the beginning of the season we were entertained every night with live music and a great atmosphere. All the staff were friendly and the owners Stephen and Dawn and there right hand woman Lou were always available with advice on places to go and things to see and do, even my two teenage sons were entertained as well as my ten year old daughter which made mine and my husbands stay much more pleasant. The food was good with a carvery for evening meal and self service breakfast but just a trip to reception and you will be advised on all the local restaurants if you fancy something different. A very pleasant experience will definately go back soon.
Not a great experience
First time to the Isle of wight for a stay of 3 days in perfect September weather. Few of our friends know where it is let alone have visited it and so we rely heavily on the comments on Tripadvisor when booking. The Holliers may best be described as a small family inn set in an historical and very attractive area known as Shanklin Old Town, very handy for shops, restaurants, the beach etc. It appears to cater for mainly elderly visitors at this time of year. We stayed in 2 of the second floor rooms 31 & 34, , both where of the same standard - rather basic, small, rather uncomfortable and in need of urgent refurbishment. The bed matresses are old and only 4 inches deep straight onto a sold divan base. The decor was 'historic' and electrics minimal. The 12 inch TV without wall stand was difficult to watch when in bed. The showers were old, difficult to set 2 bath taps to produce the right temp and the shower head was at a fixed height of 4 ft 9 in. I am 6 ft. The lighting was poor and carpets rather market. OK at £70 per night for 2, I was not expecting much, It was kept very clean but the 4 ft 6 in wide beds are terribly uncomfortable and impossible to sleep in when you are used to a king sized bed at home!!! I should have asked for a kingsized bed when booking but this is impossible when booking on line. Breakfast was mediocre. Poor quality sausages and bacon and undrinkable coffee but all self service so you could pick and choose and put together a reasonable breakfast. Now the good side. I believe that it has changed management within the last few months & the new managers seem very pleasant, hardworking people - like all the staff. I hope that some winter refurbishment will solve our niggles. A great bar atmosphere in the evening with live music. No I would not stay at the Holliers again in it's present form and I do not think the Isle of Wight is the sort of place you would want to visit regularly. Great for a few days though. The coach parties seem to 'occupy' the south towns of Shanklin & Sandown and perhaps this 'low income' business affects standards. The more upmarket towns of Yarmouth & Bembridge seem fairly 'coach free'.
Jewel in the south
What a fabulous week. A real gem, The Holliers has plenty to offer all ages, entertainment, including the very 'colourful' hosts Steve & Dawn, who made us so welocome you would have thought we had been friends for years. The staff we very helpful too. There was live music most evenings, (very talented performers) indoor/outdoor pools, sauna & jaccuzzi, which was great on the only day it rained. Breakfast was superb, and the carvery, served every evening, was not to be missed. There are restaurants in the area to suit all tastes, the crab and seafood dishes along with the cream teas are a must. We found getting about very easy pop on a bus and off, all day long. Osbourne House must not be missed! The views from the cliff tops to the sea are second to none, and there is a lift, to take you back up if your legs can't take any more. You can walk for miles, it is so pleasant and relaxing. So much we haven't yet seen or done we hope to return later on this year to soak up this wonderful island.
Great friendly hotel
We, myself, husband and two children have just returned from a four day break at the Holliers and had a brilliant time. The owner and his wife who had recently bought the hotel had moved to the island from our neck of the woods Manchester. The rooms were pleasently decorated with all mod cons & spottless. The hotel has a carvery restaurant which pleased the children almost as much as the indoor and outdoor pools. We were given a nice room overlooking the outdoor swimming pool. The owner Steve showed the children magic tricks in the evening keeping them entertained while we had a drink on the lovely patio area outside, one evening was really warm so they had the entertainer outside & he was really good too. The hotel is only a 5 minute walk to the beach and the town. There are plenty of restaurants close by with lots of choice ie; spanish, italian thai etc we ate in the hatel carvery restaurant twice and it was excellent. The breakfast is also good with cold buffet & hot full english which you help youself to. On the sad day we had to go home to Manchester we cheered ourselves up by booking for a week at the end of the summer holidays, the attentive reception staff also arranged the ferry for us for next time which we did'nt know they could do this time round. How good is that!! Roll on August 23rd.
The worst hotel I have ever been
Our beautiful holiday turned into a nightmare thanks to the absolutely unhelpful and discourteous staff at this hotel. First of all, we were given such a noisy room with a band playing right below our room that we were hardly able to sleep at night, and ended up with a headache for the rest of the trip. Next, the hotel is totally unresponsive to any form of complaints, and are not willing to make any amends. Finally, to top it all, now they say that it is not their problem that we had a problem ! This is the first time in my experience that I have found someone in the hospitality industry so "inhospitable". For all the bad memories that it brings, I will make sure that from now on I will stay out of Shanklin so that I can avoid even coming anywhere near this hotel.
Great Weekend Break
We've just returned from a wonderful weekend away on the Isle of Wight, staying at The Holliers Inn, Shanklin Old Village. We travelled with Red Funnel Holidays who booked the package (cheaper than if you booked direct with the hotel as RF give a discount off the ferry). We stayed in one of the family rooms which consisted of a double bed and 2 single beds and was spacious, clean and tidy. The bathroom looked like it had been recently refurbished too. We paid £217.50 for 2 nights accommodation with breakfast for 2 adults and one child aged 7, which we think is good value for money. Shanklin Old Village is full of charm - lovely thatched cottages, tea rooms, quaint little gift shops and pubs which serve excellent food. We ate in Vernon Tavern and the Thai restaurant a bit further up the hill. Both meals were excellent. Make sure you visit the Cider Barn to purchase your Isle of Wight cider and fruit wines! The beach is easily accessible via a pleasant walk downhill - remember you have to get back up the hill again (it's not that bad!). Overall, a great weekend and we wouldn't hesitate to stay at The Holliers Inn again, or indeed, Shanklin.
Good base for touring the island
Clean, friendly hotel, attentive staff. Room slightly on small side but had all amenities required. Delightful setting in Shanklin old village - lots of thatched cottages and good pubs/eating places, and excellent coastal walks close by. Ask for quiet room if staying Friday or Saturday night as entertainment in-house can be loud and does not finish until 1a.m!
