Just got back for a week at the Vassos Nissi Plage and would suggest that you only book this hotel if you get it really really cheap!

The hotel needs a massive revamp, our room was a joke, the bedspread had fag burns in it, the bedside lamp was falling off the wall, to open the door to the balcony you had to be a worldclass weightlifter! The shower curtain looked like it had been there for at least 20 years. If the salt water from the sea doesn't exfoilate you enough the bath towels will! I wouldn't say it was dirty but it was far from clean, in the week we were there they didn't hoover once or empty the ashtray, and they only changed the sheets twice, they couldn't even be bothered to make the beds!

We went half board and although the food okay it was far from good, options were very limited and warm at best!

We didn't dare venture into the pool for fear of catching something, the ring of dirt around the edge was enough to send us to the beach everyday!

On a lighter note all the staff are very friendly, although not the most efficient. If a beach is what you want then location wise the hotel is a great option, it was only a 30 second walk to nissi beach. The beach itself is okay not the best I've seen, it gets quite dirty because of the amount of people that go there everyday. For 2 sunbeds and a umbrella it's 6.30 euros, and there are plenty of bars and places to eat. The sea can be a bit manky, there is fine yellow seaweed for the first 50mtrs but once you get past that it's lovely!

We got a cab into the square every night you could walk it but it would prob take about 40 mins, a cab was 10 euros eachway. Most of the bars have offers and you can haggle with the PR's as to what you get, most bars are doubles for the price of singles and a free shot of something decent or 3 shots of sex on the beach. Drinks were 5 euros in 90% of the bars.

I would reccomend Ayia Napa to anyone however I would never stay at this hotel!

Recently returned from a weeks B & B at the Vassos Nissi Plage, and through choice would not go there again. The breakfast was the same every day, except for a different type of sausage on one of the days. We didn't bother with it all towards the end of our week.

Our room was on the second floor, where black mould is present throughout the corridor ceiling. When I wiped it with a tissue it came off easily suggesting that it is 'live' mould as opposed to old and dry mould. Did wonder why no one ever seemed to be in the hotel pool, until we spotted two pool lights floating about in the water, still attached to electric? Not sure, didn't fancy touching either to find out!

Besides that, it is minutes from the beach and fine for restaurants and general shops.

Had a brilliant 1/2 day trip to Famagusta, booked in one of the local tour shops, excellent driver/guide who certainly knew his Cypriot history.

Hired pushbikes at £4 a day, dedicated cycle paths running alongside the main road made it safe to ride as far as your behind will let you.

If you want good value and excellent tasting Cypriot food, give Valentinos a try. The Mez was fantastic. It's on the main road to Aya Napa, not far from the hotel.

The hotel is in an excellent location right on the beach and a 2minute stroll to the Nissi Bay Beach Bar. There is a bus stop directly opposite which takes you through Ayia Napa, Protaras, and Kalimni.

The hotel residents were mainly families and couples so if you want rowdy you'll need to look elsewhere.

The apartment was clean and very spacious so as there were 3 of us we didn't feel cramped however, there were some bad points. There is air con in the bedroom only that smells damp when you put it on, I’d advise you to take your own cutlery as the provided is a bit rusty, there is only a frying pan to cook in, the satellite TV stations are all Greek, and it could do with a lick of paint.

On the whole I would recommend this hotel to anyone who wants to stay in a central location close enough but far enough away from the madness of Ayia Napa, where the staff are very friendly and helpful.

DIRTY... The apartments were graded as 3.5 star! I would not have given it 0.5*. The swimming pool was very small - the size of the INDOOR one at another local hotel. There were cockroaches in the bedroom and ants everywhere else.

There were 6 adults and 4 children (aged between 2 and 15 years of age) in our group. We ended up getting up in the morning - staying out all day and just came back to sleep - after clearing the room from unsavoury insects. On the last day we were promised a room to shower in as our pick up time was 4pm and we had to be out of the apartment at 12noon - we were shown to the most vile area where I was supposed to wash and dress the children! I ended up changing my 2 year old daughter in a corridor!

Never, ever, ever will I be back!

This is the 2nd year I have been to Cyprus/Ayia Napa.

Having paid nearly twice as much for the holiday as I did last year we were expecting the accommodation to be of a much higher standard. It was better than the last years 2* but not as much of an improvement as we’d have hoped.

Location.

The location was fantastic! The hotel backs onto Nissi beach which is a great beach for partying in the day and taking a dip at night when retuning from the square. (not so good for relaxing on if you have a hangover though).

The location does have its drawbacks. If your in the apartments opposite the scooter park. Unfortunately this is where are room was situated it was very very noisy. People come and go on scooters at all hours and seem to use their horns as if they’re going out of fashion. The other drawback was that the bass from the music on Nissi Beach can easily be heard from the apartment. This didn’t bother me too much.

Accommodation

We stayed in two apartment blocks. My friends had to be relocated as their bedroom smelt like a squatters den! The room they were moved to was fine.

The apartments were fairly large. The living area had a coffee table, dinning table fold out bed (might as well have slept on a stone slab it was that hard) two chairs and a TV (ours wasn’t tuned in). The cooking area had two cooking hobs, a fridge and some cooking utensils. The bathroom was nice and clean but suffered from hot water and pressure problems at peek times.

The bedrooms have two single beds (can be moved together) clothes storage (cupboard draws), dressing table and a safety deposit box. The room has air conditioning (ours was rubbish but my friends unit in the other apartment was much better).

Be careful about the aircon as they ask you to pay for it yet there is a sign in the cupboard stating that from 2005 on all 3* accommodation must offer aircon at no extra cost. We only found this at the end of the holiday but they would not refund our money. There is a way to turn the aircon on without using the paid for remote control. The apartment often had infestations of ants but the cleaning ladies usually sorted them out. The cleaning staff were very good. The rooms are cleaned every day except Thursdays and Sundays.

My friends were really pleased with their room, especially the balcony and the fact that they were right above a supermarket. However there was a serious lack of knives, forks, spoons, glasses and other amenities you would expect to see in a bog standard kitchen. It’s the little things that make your stay enjoyable and being able to cut a melon without using a butter knife would have been wonderful!

The hotel facilities.

The pool was nice and clean. There were quite a few sun loungers (although we had problems getting them on the 2nd week). There was a bar, pool table, arcade cabinets, and darts. Didn’t go to any of the nightly entertainment but from what I saw heard it looked ok.

Staff

They did their job and that was it. No one stood out as being particularly friendly (except the guy on reception late at night). They were nowhere near as warm and welcoming as the staff from last year’s accommodation.

My friend didn’t really like one of the woman on the desk who looked at you like she’d just trodden on you on the way in.

Our Olympic rep was really helpful and friendly throughout and she answered our questions well and went out of her way to help us when we were booking excursions etc.

Ayia Napa.

Amazing for night life.

Not all that nice too look at in the day (except for beaches).

People not as friendly as in Protaras.

The bulk of the bars in Ayia Napa play a mixture of RnB, rap and garage.......I noticed a lot more garage being played this year as opposed to last year but fortunately they mixed it up to cater for everybody.

We went on the Olympic bar crawl and the Bedrock beach party, both of which were fantastic, we all had a great time.

Although the beach party arranged by bedrock/Olympic was a really enjoyable, as a rule I think bedrock is poor. Its over-packed, over-rated and generally a not so good place to go and get drunk. If it wasn’t on the main stretch of bars I doubt it would be half as packed.

Ignore everything you read about trouble in Ayia Napa….its rubbish. Its like anywhere in the world…..you will find trouble if you go looking for it. Almost everyone in Napa is high on the fact that they’re on holiday with their mates, getting drunk and having a good laugh. So if a stranger comes up to you and starts chatting away don’t go on the defensive, just be polite and have a chat……its not a marriage proposal….its just a chat.

Never saw any trouble whilst I was there although there did appear to be an increased number of scallys as opposed to last year...........sort yourselves out lads.....peaked caps perched on the top of your head, Burberry polo necks and YTS moustaches don’t look cool……

I was REALLY disappointed with Heavens rock garden this year…..it was all Metallica and Limp Bizkit!........what happened to pink Floyd, blur and nirvana guys……you have really let yourselves down! you cant talk in there so its not the place to go if you want to chat up any women……or even just talk to your mates.

I would stay in the hotel again (but wouldn’t want to pay as much). If I return to Cyprus I will stay in Protaras and travel into Ayia Napa for my nights out. Protaras is cleaner more modern and the locals are a lot nicer. One impression I had about Ayia Napa is that a lot of people just want your money and don’t seem to care about you as an individual. The locals in Protaras are much more welcoming and treat your like their guest.

WARNING, be very careful about renting quad bikes and scooters. The place we rented ours from accused me of damaging the quad WHEN I DID NOT. I had to pay £21cyp for the damages (she was originally asking for £42).

I do recommended getting transportation so you can travel to experience the sea caves and the cliff jump. Just make sure that when you rent the vehicle they walk you round it to show you what condition it is in. Get them to sign something to confirm what they have shown you.

I stayed at the Vassos Nissi Plage Hotel in the main hotel rather than the apartments, during the last two weeks of May 2005. We were a party of four adults and one baby.

The hotel is situated on the very edge of the Ayia Napa area, about a 40-minute transfer from Larnaca airport.

We found the hotel to be clean, the bedrooms large and clean but in need of a little refurbishment. Air conditioning and use of a mini-safe and iron are available – at a small price. There is a laundry service. Bathrooms are clean but Cypriot plumbing generally is not the most efficient in the world, however it all works - after a fashion. The lounge, bar and restaurant areas are clean and fairly comfortable. There is a games area for children, pool, table tennis, games machines etc. The pool and area is kept very clean and is of adequate size, although again the sun loungers are a little decrepit.

The staff, in common with most Cypriots, are very friendly and obliging, especially with very young children, although recently some staff have been recruited from the new E.U. countries and they are somewhat less willing than the locals.

The only serious criticism, which we had, is of the food, the evening meals in particular we found to be of poor quality, usually lukewarm, although presented on heated trays, and tasteless, lacking seasoning, often overcooked. The buffet style breakfasts were a slight improvement, consisting of the usual continental style cold meat, cheese etc. and scrambled or fried eggs and beans and also what passed for bacon and sausage . My advice would be to book only bed and breakfast. There is a choice of many and varied restaurants within a few minutes of the hotel.

The hotel is literally only two minutes from Nissi beach, a fine sandy beach with several kiosks selling snacks, fast food, and drinks. Umbrellas and beach beds are available at £1.75 per day each. Scuba diving, jet skis, bungee jumping also take place from the beach.

The hotel is about 45 minutes stroll from the centre of Ayia Napa, along a road lined with souvenir shops, restaurants, fast food outlets and small supermarkets. Hairdressers, banks and a chemist are also within a few minutes walk.

One night a week the hotel employs a local singer/keyboard player to entertain. A little goes a long way. No other entertainment is organised by the hotel at that time of the year, which is generally quiet at night, depending on the other guests of course.

To sum up, we were very satisfied with the Vassos Nissi Plage hotel with the single main drawback of the evening meal. We also found that car hire (at under £20 a day all in, if you haggle) to be a great advantage if you wish to see more of the island - highly recommended.
