Poseidon Hotel Reviews

If you are looking to take a holiday...

Sep 2007, Mr C G

If you are looking to take a holiday in Georgioupolis then like us you are probably looking for a quiet and peaceful place to stay. If so avoid the Poseidon.
The accommodation is right on the sandy beach outside the village but the proximity of the main National Road (about 10 metres) and late night noise from the beach bar caused problems even with the windows closed. Despite what the website says, we found this to be far noisier than apartments in Georgioupolis itself.
The rooms are typically basic Greek (how do they get away with this in the 21st Century) with no thrills although these did have a shower curtain. Not all rooms have cooking facilities although we were not made aware of this from the website we used to book the accommodation. We were allocated a basic room and had to pay a further 50 Euro for an upgrade with cooking facilities as the only room available was for 3 people.
The rooms (I am not sure if all) have air conditioning but again the website we used did not mention that there was an additional charge (5 Euro per day) although we did expect this to be the case.
Be aware also that despite the website stating that the Poseidon is 800 metres out of Georgioupolis it is at least double that distance.
We paid to include breakfast and the use of sun loungers and umbrella on the beach although I now understand that this is optional. Breakfast was the same everyday consisting of Tea or Coffee, bread with butter, honey, and Cherry jam and a glass of fresh orange juice.
However, as mentioned previously, the main problem for us was the late night noise. We were in one of the beach facing rooms and the beach bar was open every night until at least 1am. On our last day the bar eventually closed at 3am.
I do not want to sound like a grumpy old man but the music played suited the age of the young girls employed by the Poseidon (18) rather than the average age of the people staying in the accommodation. As such the only people using the bar after about 11 pm were the girls and a few local Greeks. It was not only the music that was a problem but the shouting and shrieking that accompanied it.
Had this been used by fellow guests it would have been easier to accept but it was almost like the staff’s private party and there was no consideration given to the people actually staying there.
We did complain to the owner, who did try to turn the volume down a bit but this was always short lived. In fact she provided the best advice I can offer when she said that when she stays there she always brings ear-plugs! You have been warned.
On the positive side the rooms were cleaned regularly and are located right on the beach. There is also a Taverna and we did have lunch there twice but the food was pretty average.
In fact, we found the food generally in the Tavernas in Georgioupolis to be rather disappointing this year compared to our last visit 2 years ago. Then we did not have a bad meal whereas this year I can only offer 2 places that I felt were good. They were Sunlight and Neorio with the latter being the best.
If you are looking for a peaceful holiday location in Crete then I would recommend Georgioupolis but I would suggest you look at other accommodation unless you are not concerned about late night noise, or travel with earplugs.
