We travel to Calais/Ostend twice a year and normally book Ibis, B&B, Holiday Inn. This time we had a late break and due though Bank Holiday FULLY BOOKED SCENARIO ended up in The Bel Azur, down town Calais. I understand why availability was here and nowhere else.
If Hundreds of Thousands of Pounds (sorry Euros) where spent to replicate a dump it could not come close to the natural look of this Hotel. It is very difficult to put into words but I would be vey surprised if anyone stayed their twice.
The rooms were tatty to say the least, shower room disgusting, toilets unflushable, no hot water, only cold tap worked, stained walls and floors. The funny side was we actually laughed because we stayed there for 2 nights. Four large bolts with nuts went through either side of the shower room walls these held the TV brackets in our and next doors room. Carpets were covered in paint from when rooms were last decorated probably (1950 circa).
The highlight of the bedroom was Brown threadbare under blankets on the beds. Y
ou may think I am been harsh but try it and put it down to one of the Ten Worst places to visit before you pass away. By the way 182 Euros for 2 nights was not cheap either, compared to aforementioned Hotels. The lesson to be learned is make sure you book well in advance if not, sleep in a garbage bin or anywhere other than the Bel Azur.

Actually it sounded good online. It had what I needed and was inexpensive. However I did not research it fully. And this was a BIG mistake. Later my wife read the reviews and screamed at me over the phone that I should have gone anywhere else but there! Well, I stayed anyway. Now here is my review.
First let me say what was ok or what worked:
1. Everything worked, the lights, the shower, the toilet, the bed sheets were clean, the phone. Everything was in working order. The TV too.
2. It was quiet and relaxing.
3. The receptionist spoke English, not well but enough. She was reasonbly friendly and helpful. And effecient. I was quickly checked in and out without problem.
4. The breakfast was fine. Not spectacular, but more than enough. The dining room was carefully prepared for breakfast. it cost however 7.50 € without service which seems a bit on the high side (and I'm Swiss!)
The negatives:
Paying 9 € to park my motorcycle
The Hotel Hallways stank. I am not sure what the odor was, but it was akin to old cat **** in a sandbox. Perhaps there were squatters living here one time when the hotel was not in service? This was a particularly strong odor in the hallway. The room stank not quite so bad (still stank a bit)
The Bathroom was full of mold on the walls and pipes. Enough that it probably was bordering on a health danger.
There was not enough lighting in the hotel. I would imagine a woman alone would not feel very safe in the hallways.
The room was small, although I had a small price, so maybe understandable.
There is Free WiFi in the hotel, but it was not accessible from my room. It works next to the reception in the loung, and maybe in particular rooms. I am not sure, did not ask.
Conclusion: The price and location and delivery of services was acceptable, particularly for the price. However, the stink and the danger from mould in the bathrooms was the lasting impression I had. I would never, ever stay there again, and I would never recommend it. The condition of the rooms and overall darkness is as another reviewer wrote, absolutly ghastly... until now the worst hotel I ever stayed in was in Bucharest, Romania in the 1990's after the revolution. However, this was decidely worse.
