JUST RETURNED FROM A WEEKS HOLIDAY AT THE DON ANGEL HOTEL IN SANTA SUSANNAH AND WE HAVE HAD A LOVELY TIME. I HAVE READ IN OTHER REVIEWS THAT THE HOTEL WAS DIRTY, THE STAFF WERE RUDE AND THE FOOD NOTHING TO WRITE ABOUT, AND WHAT A LOAD OF RUBBISH THAT IS. THE STAFF COULDNT HAVE BEEN FRIENDLIER THE HOTEL WAS SPOTLESS AND THE FOOD WAS ABSOLUTELY FINE. IT IS LOCATED IN A QUIET SPOT BUT IF YOU WANTED A FEW BEERS IN AN ENGLISH BAR IN A LIVELIER AREA YOU ONLY HAD TO WALK A FEW HUNDRED YARDS DOWN THE ROAD AND YOU WERE SPOILT FOR CHOICE. I WOULD RECOMMEND THIS HOTEL FOR ANYONE, COUPLES OR FAMILIES OF ANY AGE AND WILL NOT HESITATE TO BOOK HERE AGAIN.

We booked this hotel at a very cheap deal – the old saying you get what you pay for is definitely true! The flights were good and the check in was brilliant – after that it went downhill.

Firstly when we got into the room we realised we had been given a twin room just with two extra (full sized) beds put into it – one covering the dressing table and patio door and the other obstructing the bathroom door and radiator – not only a fire hazard but surely a health and safety issue. The room was clean on arrival but the floor was not swept once during the entire week and the towels were only refolded and beds remade – we had clean sheets once – we had our own toothpaste stain the whole week on the towels – least we think it was our toothpaste. Nothing was dusted at all – I ended up doing it myself.

On this sort of holiday you expect some sort of repetition in the food but we were appalled by the quality of food served, it was never hot only lukewarm even if you were first in when the doors opened, the glasses were always dirty, plates still with bits of the last meal stuck on them and soaking wet, also they were well beyond replacement time – scuffed and chipped. Each lunch and dinner consisted of soup (very very watered down powdered variety) fish, pork, chicken, steaks, some sort of potato, chips, paella and various pasta and rice salads – all of these made up with the previous (or even two days previous) left over pasta, (once the paella was actually made from the previous nights spaghetti – not sure spaghetti paella is normal!!) two pasta sauces, plain pasta and vegetable fingers. This was it for 2 meals for 7 days. There was admittedly plenty of fresh fruit and salad but always exactly the same never any variety. For pudding there was cake, ice cream, rice pudding full of cinnamon, jelly and fruit. It was obvious that the pasta salads were made up of leftovers as they used different pastas each night, i.e. penne, shells, twists. Also if you like butter on your roll with soup make sure you ‘take’ some with you from breakfast as that is the only time of day it is out. Also each breakfast time if you like coffee be prepared to wait as the Spanish seem to be obsessed with it and the hotel only ever have 2 out of 3 machines working and the queues are dreadful – mainly as you are waiting for each person to fill up cereal bowls with the stuff instead of cups! Also when we finally found the hidden tea bags on the last day they appeared to be rationed to one per person per day!

However despite all this the worst and absolutely most despicable thing about this hotel was the fact that one night whilst having a bottle of white wine with our meal we noticed the inside of the bottle cap stained with red wine, it was then that we realised that they were refilling the bottles out the back. On observing the rest of the week this became more obvious until we realised they were even doing it with the bottled water too. One bottle of diet Pepsi our daughter had was 3 months out of date, on questioning (which was a problem as none of the staff in the restaurant spoke any English at all) we were told the cap had been on it so wasn’t a problem! Our son has a heart condition and when we bought him a sealed can into the restaurant for our own peace of mind we were severely reprimanded and he was told to stop drinking it immediately.

We were the only British in the entire hotel – it seems to be a haven for elderly Spanish on their breaks – this isn’t a problem to us at all – however we found them incredibly rude on occasion with some of them even elbowing our 7 year old out of the way to get to food. They would push in front of you for everything from the lifts to the food.

There is currently building work both sides from 7am every morning - be warned about going onto the balcony in your nightie!! The sea or pool view is there – just take your binoculars and be prepared to strain your neck round corners! Also the website shows gardens which no longer exist.

I have to say there is good disabled access if required. There are no poolside toilets and the ones inside the hotel are not very fragrant – and of course you need to be fully dry and dressed to go to the loo inside which doesn’t help small kids. In the poolside showers there are exposed electric cables and no drain covers, and there appears to be no pool maintenance as the sunbeds were in the same place you left them the next morning. The website and hotel info in rooms advises you can if desired pay a 6 Euro deposit to take hotel towels to the poolside with you – unless you are Kate Moss’s smaller sister there aint nothing those towels are covering and drying! Also they are rough dirty towels which you wouldn’t want to use – let alone steal!

We made the most of our holiday and we love the Costa Brava but next year we will be going back to the Hotel Monteplaya further down in Malgrat – there is limited shops etc in Santa Susanna but it is a very clean resort with a lovely market on Tuesday. Highly recommend using the trains and heading to Barca for the day.

Six of us (all adults) spent 10 nights at the Don Angel and not one of us was happy at the end of the holiday. Rooms were not too bad but the food was terrible. It was all buffet style food, you had a good choice of food but you never knew what you were eating - none of the staff spoke english, so it was a waste of time asking them what was on offer. When you eventually fought your way to the front of the queue the food was always cold, eating cold sausage and bacon with fried egg wasn’t my way of starting a day.

Dinner and evening meal wasn’t much better - COLD FOOD. If you wanted warm food you had to be in there first but that meant queuing for half an hour before the doors opened. The hotel doesn’t cater for the English, wouldn’t have been so bad if the staff spoke some English.

Ended up going out every night to the local pubs which were excellent. Recommend using the train system – brilliant, cheap and easy to use. The town itself was good no complaints about it. Good entertainment all through the town and the night market that was on every night was good.

An absolutely fantastic Hotel situated on the south east coast of Spain, basically right on the golden beach.

Food superb always delicious and hot.

The actual accommodation we stayed in was lovely, it had a lovely balcony which we sat on for a few hours and saw the stunning view below.

We went to the beach on the Thursday and it was absolutely boiling hot but the sea was an excellent way to cool down, it wasn't too cold and it wasn't too hot it.

Was an all round a super holiday.

Super hotel! Stayed three times in Don Angel and every time it was super. Food was tasty and me, my wife and our 6 year old daughter loved it.

Every day enough to choose off. Every day a clean room with fresh towels. Friendly staff and lots of fun.

This year we will spend again our holiday at Don Angel.

We spent a 2 week break in hotel don angel last year 2005 and found it very disappointing. It was tired and unkempt.

We had been there previously and found it to be comfortable. We would not go again unless we were assured that everything was brought up to a better standard. Food was boring and usually cold. Chips with everything. Rooms were dirty and bedding falling apart.

The towels in the bathroom were stained and again very tatty.

The staff however were friendly and very helpful when questioned regarding places to visit and local attractions.
