" Worst holiday of my life "

I stayed here in the summer of 2007 (not 2008 as I had to choose in the dropdown menu). We had travelled from North Wales & took hours & we were greeted by the holiday park from hell. Dated - similar to the one you find on the Holiday on the Buses comedy film. Half expecting Reg Varney to appear! As I said, dated, dirty, unhelpfull staff. Caravans situated well away from the park itself over a country lane & an a very steep hill. Does not mention anywhere that the hill exists there fore not at all suitable for the elderly or infirm. Got to our caravan (the last but one at the very bottom!) & it had the previous occupiers dirty linen crumpled on the bed, hadn't even been cleaned. i complained & they sent the cleaners in - could have done it better with my eyes closed. The "entertainment" was awful, young gormless lad selling greasy chips in the corner of the place, oh goodness.....just awful. Never again. I was glad in a way that both of my girls started to feel unwell the day before we were due home so we could leave early! They were OK after we got home. the pool was awful, cold, dirty...the whole place needs demolishing & starting again.

Advice: Never stay at any Woolacombe holiday park

" Fantastic. "

Stayed at the Golden Coast 5th-12th sept 09.
What are people moaning about.
We stayed in a Riviera Grande caravan and it was spotless, and you even have table and bench set outside your caravan which have a metal plate on them so you can have a bbq, which we did a few times, in fact the whole site was spotless and staff are so very helpful. There is so much to do here that even if you are unlucky and have wet weather, the family would never be bored and most of the amenieies are free. There is also an on site double decker bus which is £3.00 pp for your whole stay. This bus will take you to the other 3 woolacombe sites where you can use there facilities and it will also take you to the most wonderful beach I have ever seen....even abroad.
Woolacombe itself is only a small town but very nice.
I would defo recommend this site and will be reurning next year.
Keep up the great work Golden Coast.

Advice: Beautifull but very hilly.

Activities: The Fortescue pub does a fantastic carvery for £8.95 pp.

" Fun Family Holida "

After reading some reviews on here I was very worried about the holiday we had booked at Golden Coast. However, I didn't need to be, as a party of 8 aged 5 to 63! we all had the best time. Staying in a Honeysuckle 3 bed lodge on the lakeside it was lovely, ok it wasn't the Ritz (you are on a holiday camp after all) but the lodge was nicely decorated, clean and well equipped. My children and their grandparents especially enjoyed feeding the ducks and their babies which wondered around outside the lodges all day (very cute) We didn't have the greatest weather but with all the facilities on the park it didn't matter. Looking back as some of the negative reviews I cannot understand why the comments were made, all 8 of us came home with the best memories and I would recommend this holiday to any friend! So if you have a holiday booked here ignore the negative comments and I hope you have as much fun as we did x

" Great place to be "

I've read some of these reviews and am horrified at some people. I can safely say I have stayed in all types of accomodation at Golden coast and what a great place. Some of the criticism I have read is beyond shocking. You can most the people sad enough to write this stuff are simply looking for money back. One person has listen thirty odd faults and there all laughable. I think the term in customer service is professional complainer that didn't get there own way. So here are just some of the fantastic points about Golden coast
Four fantastic pools including a great outdoor pool that's so warm its like a bath.
Traditional family fun days which I loved especially the live band bbq and running bungee
Evening entertainment is fantastic there little ents manager was simply amazing and his staff are a great asset to the park
There beach is unbelievable 3.5 miles of golden sand almost crystal ocean.
Ex34 activities where well priced and very varied inc horse riding, kayaking, rock climbing
A small clubhouse provided a great atmosphere every night and allowed me to get to know four different families who I now stay in touch with
You are in one of the most beautiful places in the world North Devon Golden coast
I hope this clears just some of the complaints from people that simply like to complain and find it hard to see things positively. I bet you guys have loads of fun. I am well travelled around the world and I have to say what a gem I have uncovered in little Woolacombe and Golden coast. You could quite literally be anywhere in the world.

Advice: So beautiful it takes you breath away

" Golden Coast Holiday village, Woolacombe "

We booked a short break at this park through a national newspaper promotion that they regularly run by collecting tokens and getting a reasonably cheap short break/holiday. This park was our first choice as we fancied a change from a caravan, and even though you don't get a choice of what accomodation you get they had a range of types of accomodation at Golden Coast and so took a chance.
We were allocated a 1 bedroom Clematis appartment which for just the two of us the size was fine. It was a 4 berth appartment but could be a little awkward if there actually had been 4 of us using it. The bathroom is off the bedroom and so if you were sleeping on the sofa bed could be awkward having to go into the bedroom to get to the bathroom at night.
The exterior areas of the park seemed clean and generally well looked after, although signage was a bit lacking and so quite easy to take the wrong turning in the car trying to find the accomodation. Parts of the park are quite cramped with narrow roads/driveways near to parked cars.
The interior of the accomodation was fairly tired and in need of refurbishment. The carpet was a wine red colour and in need of replacement as it was marked and fairly untidy looking. The furniture was probably 20 years old, fairly tired and the sofa was ripped on the arm. The general atmosphere reminded me of walking into an old fashioned pub/restaurant that hasn't been updated for a long time!
The bathroom was fairly dimmly lit and on the face of it appeared clean but I think if we'd looked harder that wouldn't have been the case!
As part of the promotion you have to pay extra for the entertainment passes and linen, which I did by sending them a cheque 3-4 months ago. There was no linen provided in the appartment which as it's an optional extra payment I'm 99% certain that I paid for along with the entertainment passes. I had to go to reception on the second day and pay for it again. As I didn't have my cheque book with me I can't prove otherwise. They said I hadn't paid for it.
It was little things that annoyed, such as 1 or 2 lightbulbs not working and no shelf guard in the bottom of the fridge door so stuff fell out everytime you open it. The owners/management need to stay in the accomodation to see what's good/bad about the things that they charge money for. I'm guessing it's easier not to.
This park is not great but I'm sure there's worse. If I'd paid £700 like some people who seem to want to list every single detail about what they percieve to be wrong with the place I'd feel it was poor value for money, but for what we paid even though we're unlikely to stay there again it wasn't too bad.
Overall the place wasn't bad but I doubt we would return to this park.

" Doesn't even rate a 1! "

This is the worst place I have ever stayed in my whole life. We stayed 1 night and that was only because we had arrived too late to turn around and drive back home.
The apartment we had stank, the chairs looked 20 years old and some of the carpets mlooked like they dated back to the 70's! The patio windos were covered in bird poo. There were no blinds on the window and hence no privacy.
As far as accomodation goes this is the lowest of the low - we didn't bother complaining because we wouldn't have accepted "an upgrade". They were just as bad! I've stayed in better student accomodation.

Advice: Woolocombe beach was lovely

" negative reviews "

we have been going to the golden coast for 14 years, we started going before most of the lodges were even built and yes there have been changes - not all good- but we've always had a great time, staying in the lodges or caravan. these have always been clean with everything we needed. it's a shame that many of the reviews have been so negative. this year i'm taking my so to newquay only because he wants to go to the zoo there but i'm planing on getting a tent and driving up to the golden coast for a couple of nights camping there. we were there once when a large group of bikers turned up for a loud weekend, it wasn't nice but we were compensated and booked again for later in the year. we feel comfortable there. sorry some have had bad times, but trust i've been to worse places in the south of england where the pans were growing the pans were covered with furry mould and when i complained "I" was threatened with legal action and told cleanliness is different for all of us. the golden coast is worth the 5 hour drive andwe will continue to go there.

Advice: the perfect place for family holiday

Activities: the carvery just outside park gates

" Easewell Farm (Woolacombe Bay Holiday Parks) "

My family and I have stayed at Easewell Farm (part off the Woolacombe Bay Holiday Parks group) in our own touring caravan for several years now and had many wonderful holidays there but already this year has been the best yet!
There have been some tremendous improvements made to Easewell. There has obviously been lots of thought and care taken with the alterations.
The pitches in B field looked very stark on arrival at the end of March but with the planting of the hedges bodes well for the future.
Thankfully we do not need our mowers or strimmers! and there are no problems with grass cuttings in our caravans.
To have the water and drainage on the pitch is absolutely fantastic.
Our two youngest children are completely spoiled in that they do not have to fill the water barrel and empty the waste master. But you never know with A LITTLE TRAINING WE MIGHT GET THEM TO EMPTY THE CHEMICAL TOILET!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
We would like to give special praise for the site wardens Dee and Steve for continuous hard work. They are in our opinion the first wardens since we have been on site to come up to the high standard of the staff that we have encountered at Woolacombe Bay. They are a great asset to Woolacombe Bay Holiday Parks.
We now feel that with the improvements they have carried out and the ongoing improvements that we are now in a stronger position to recommend and promote Easewell Farm and Woolacombe Bay Resorts.
Hopefully the money they have invested this year will reap in benefits for themselves over the future years and will achieve the 5 star rating that it rightly deserves.
We have had a very enjoyable holiday, who needs a passport !!!

" Lovely park, terrible accomodation "

We stayed at Golden Coast last year for May day weekend. We were with about 150 other people on a mini rugby tour. We had upgraded our caravan for the best one that they had. We arrived, the carpet was stained, the seating was held up by a plank of wood, there were cobwebs all over, the floors were sticky, bathrooms mouldy and the caravan smelt terrible. Everyones caravan was in the same condition. We complained and were moved to a villa which was a lot nicer. The park itself is lovely with loads of things to do. The pubs are very pricey.

Advice: Devon is a beautiful place

" Booked a caravan on the net. Watched... "

Booked a caravan on the net. Watched a video of the van, and booked. Wanted a top class van which was new. Just wanted to relax for the week. Arrived at Twitchen house in Wollacombe. Site was fine. The van was the pits!! It smelt and was not the same as the video we had watched on their website. We went straight to reception and asked if we had been given the wrong van? The woman there was very hostile and insisted to us and another person( who was complaining of the same thing) that we had the right one. I told her it was filthy and it smelt. She said that houskeeping could come and clean it for us. We refused and asked for our money back. We had a stern "NO". We returned to the van. We started to clean it and make the best of a bad job. Firstly the pots and pans looked like they had been used on a bonfire. Plus the handles were hanging off. Then the microwave was red rusty inside and bits of the paint was crumbling. This would have been in the food. There was cobwebs everywhere. The sink was green, but looked brown with tea stains. It was the last resort when I found a skid mark down the loo, and pubic hair from the previous occupiers.! My husband went to reception with the pans and told the same woman that these pans represented the cleanliness of the van. She never said a word. Just looked at him and said that they would be replaced. She then started talking about us to her colleague. How rude!! Then the table and chairs nearly collapsed!! Up came 2 maintenance guys. When I showed them both the state of the van they couldn't beleive it. One of them brought us up a new microwave. Then repaired the table. The other brought us more pans.( not new ones) There was even toe nails left in the seats. The bed didn't seem too bad, but neither of us wanted to sleep in it. Next day the shower cubicle glass fell out, almost landing on my husbands toe!!!! The oven was as black as a used barbecue too. I cant tell you about the barbecue, because it was so dirty I dont know here to begin. I had spent over 3hours cleaning and bleaching, and it still was not clean by any means. This is not acceptable. It cost £300 for the week. We left on Tuesday(3 days after arriving) We had had enough. It was the worst place we have ever stayed in. DONT GO!"!!!!!!!!!!! We will be writing to the british tourist board and the site managers. We didn't expect it to be like home, but it should have been hygienic, especially as this was the highest class van.

" We have been goiong to the Golden... "

We have been goiong to the Golden Coast for some years and have always had an enjoyable holiday. We stayed last christmas and were hugely disappointed but put it down to being maybe too high expectations for xmas on our behalf. Went back on Aug 30th, very much looking forward to our stay. We booked their highest grade caravan, The Tobago. However, we had a call a few days before going to say they had maintenance issues with the caravan (A5, we were told was booked) and they would upgrade us free to a lodge. Great we thought. ALways look lovely from the outside. My goodness were we in for a shock. It was filthy!!!! Seating was far from luxurious as described. I was scared to sit on it! Beds were all stained with god knows what. Linen we were promised was not in there. Hadf to fetch ourselves when no one turned up with it. Rang to complain about cooker and were told someone would come out. No one showed. Grill pan was filthy, radiators were hanging from walls, mould was in all rooms on walls and ceilings, it was awful!! We later found out we had been booked into wrong caravan (a budget one) which was why we were upgraded. Do not appreciate being lied to.

Entertainment. Well what can I say? In orevious years they have always had kids party dances, as they did this year, then a kids cabaret at around 7 then later on adults one about ten. This time hardly anything on till 10pm at all, other than same old dances every night and the same blinkin CD hour after hour. It was dire. Kids were too tired to enjoy cabaret at 10pm.

We have written a complaint and awaiting a reply, but won't hold my breath!! We have always loved this place but it has gone downhill big time. Will never ever return.

" We were due to stay in a lovely... "

We were due to stay in a lovely Cottage on a golf course for a week, but they rang (the day before we were due to travel) to say it was damaged and would have to cancel. As we were a family of 6 all ready to go we looked on the internet and found this resort and booked it was going to cost us an extra £250 but we were assured on the phone, it was lovely, and looking on the website at the description of the 3 bedrom Honeysuckle lodge we were quite impressed and booked. We received a phone call 10minutes later to say if we could leave on the Fri rather than the Sat we could get it at a further £250 cheaper, so we took this offer.

When we arrived we were impressed with the site and went a got the key to our lodge. On entering the lodge we noticed the windows hadn't been cleaned in rather a long time the UPVC was dirty on the windows and doors. There wasn't adequate seating for 6 providing just a ripped 2 seater sofa and 2 armchairs. The TV screen was filthy and the floor needed a good vac. On entering the bedrooms although a very good size there was dirty stained linen on the beds in all 3 rooms. I went into one of the bathrooms to find the bin full of dirty sanitary items.

We went back to reception to complain and was greated by a young girl with an appauling attitude who didn't seem remotely bothered. She just handed us some more keys to another lodge without even an apology.

On entering the new lodge although it was cleaner the skirting boards were dirty and it was tired and still had the same inadequate seating. There were no sheets on the bed and the mattress and pillow cases were badly stained. We went back to reception to ask for sheets and were handed some clean linen in sealed bags. On the way back to the lodge we bumped into another family who on opening their clean linen had found it full of blood!

We got back to the lodge and decided that because our elderly grandparents were with us and we had an 11 month old baby we would look for another accomadation within the area and ask for a refund. We found another place to stay and returned to the Golden Coast 2hours after arriving to ask for a refund and were told we were not entitled to this as they had offered us an alternative accomadation. We explained that the alternative was no where near the standard we expected for something we were willing to pay over £700 for and asked to speak to the manager.

A young lady came out and told us she was acting manager. When explaining the situatuation she was very aggressive and did not apologise once, told us we were still not entitled to a refund, and showed us the refund policy in the brochure. When we explained we had booked online the night before and were unaware of this policy she said that was our problem not hers! She continued to shout and be aggressive to my nan of 67 (as it had been booked in her name) whilst the rest of the staff including a big security guard watched smugly. My nan said if she didn't lower her voice and calm down she would have to call the police as we all felt very threatened. At which point the acting manager started to point and scream at my nan saying she did not take kindly to threats.

We did call the police who although unable to come out straight away were very helpful and put us in touch with the right people to try and get our money back and complain. We then explained to manager that both my grandparents weren't well and this wasn't helping and at this moment in time we just wanted to take them home, she replied if you had said that in first place we would have refunded you but as we had complained we weren't entitled to anything!

We left the holiday park upset, distressed and tired making our way to our new accomodation.

I would tell anybody who wants to stay at this park not to! It may have been good once but the standard has gone right downhill and the staff are all young and inexperienced in customer relations!

" These are the issues we have... "

These are the issues we have complained to the park about:
1. We arrived at approx 5.20pm on Friday 29th, and were directed to pitch 70, when we arrived at the pitch it was completely water logged, with thick deep mud which had been churned up by a motor home, it would have been impossible to put a tent on this pitch.
2. We were then offered pitch 61, which we initially inspected and appeared to be mostly grass, so initially appeared to be OK. We spend over an hour and a half trying to pitch our tent here but the ground was mostly made up of stone and we were unable to get tent pegs into the ground, 70% of our tent pegs were damaged by attempted. We repeatedly tried because we were told there were only 2 other pitches available this one and 98. After we found the problem we went to inspect 98 and found it had been taken. We again went to reception to ask whether there was anything else available, a chalet or something – it was that or spend another 5 hours driving home! The supervisor checked our booking and found that we had been given pitches for motor homes and not tents hence the problem. We were then given pitch 3.
3. Pitch 3 was near the main entrance road and we suffered from cars using this road as a race track at night despite being told that although it was near the road it would be quiet at night! This kept us awake or woke us when it occurred.
4. Persistent late night shouting and singing from other residents of the site after the entertainment centre was closed. Nobody was around to stop them, this disturbed and woke us frequently.
5. The toilets - in the ladies, of 6 cubicles only 2 locked, of 5 in the gents only 2 locked.
6. The toilets were not replenished with toilet rolls and frequently ran out.
7. One of the toilets in the gents was permanently blocked.
8. There was no soap in the gents or ladies the entire time.
9. The dish wash sinks were never cleaned and lumps of food left in one was there the entire time of our stay.
10. The showers had black mould in the tile grout and round the edges.
11. The showers did not drain properly.
12. We did not get our tent pitched until gone 9pm so had no option than to use the main restaurant / bar to eat the first night. The food here was exceptionally poor quality, and the fish that I had was watery and not properly cooked.
13. There was no healthier food options, no salads, no plain jacket potatoes, no low fat mayo.
14. Despite eating in the bar we had to eat out of takeaway boxes no plates were offered.
15. I saw no evidence of kitchen staff wearing hats which is a H&S recommendation.
16. All but 1 of the kitchen staff were just in jeans t-shirts and trainers and at least one of these had no idea what he was doing.
17. There were no staff on hand even just occasionally checking the indoor pool to stop kids jumping, running and bombing in the pool.
18. The unisex changing rooms only had 3 lockable changing cubicles out of the 6 or 7 that were there.
19. There were no staff around at night to deal with the car driving and rowdy people.
20. The Old Mill Pub had no carvery food left when we went there Sunday evening for a meal, but there was no indication of this anywhere.
21. The food quality at the Old Mill pub was mostly poor, only my husbands meal was acceptable, plus there were no healthy options on the menu, no salads and no low fat mayo. The egg with my meal was solid and I was not asked if I wanted in runny, soft or hard.
22. The desserts on offer were clearly not home cooked! The advertising is home cooked meals.
23. I ordered a glass of red wine at the Old Mill having seen some reasonable quality ones on the shelving at the back but they automatically gave me the standard and not good quality stuff from the pumps, I was given no choice.
24. The arcade – no member of staff was available to deal with problems, many of the machines had coins jammed in them and the children lost money in these frequently. The change machines were out of use a lot of the time. Some of the machines (Jurassic Park as an example, had misaligned guns, triggers were missing or broken etc, basically very poorly maintained.
25. The Golden Bowl which is clearly part of the complex, like the swimming pools – we were extremely surprised to find we had to pay to use, at very least we expected as paying residents to have at least one family session free, even if further sessions had to be paid for.
26. The entertainment, that which we were subjected to, was painful.
27. The outside pool could not have been very clean as when ever we walked past it the covers were never properly secured and ducks spent a great deal of time on / in it.
28. The reception, arcades and other public areas all had very dirty and tired carpeting.

All in all we were very disappointed and what we hoped would be a fun and relaxing holiday just made us very stressed and unhappy. I have requested at very least full refund including our travel costs which we can put towards another short break but not at any of the Woolacombe Bay parks. Woolacombe itself is a wonderful place but the park leaves so much to be desired, it does the area no good at all.

" We have just returned from 1 week at... "

We have just returned from 1 week at the golden coast.

well what can i say, it was the worsy holiday i have ever been on in my life.

we complained and were moved to a two bed house that was so dirty that we had to clean it ourselves. again was damp. and we left a day early because half of our party have sore throats and colds form the damp.

there was nothing for the under 5's to do after 4pm cos everything closed.

WOULD NEVER EVER GO BACK TO THIS PLACE EVER AGAIN AS LONG AS I LIVE.!!!!

" We arrived at the Golden Coast Resort... "

We arrived at the Golden Coast Resort on 26.07.08 firstly given a Estoril van as booked and paid in full for some months previously, we unpacked and found someones presents in one of the cupboards, deciding to take them to reception when we were ready, we discovered very quickly that nothing had been cleaned and outside floor was cleaner than the carpet and floors inside the van, we decided that we would unpack and find a local supermarket to find cleaning products and to have some lunch, we locked up and went, we came back a couple of hours later and found the van door unlocked and wide open knowing that we had locked it and discovered that the presents were gone we rang reception and complained, we then took a shower which leaked into the wardrobe and confronted reception after about 20 minutes we were told that we would be substantially upgraded to Blue Bell Woods (2 bed house sleeps 6), so we packed up and moved hoping that this would be somewhat better, but surprise surprise it was just as bad, due to it now getting late and us having a very long day we made our beds and retired for the night, the next morning it seemed worse, my husband hoovered all the dust and cob webs and the buckets of dirt from the carpets, I cleaned (bleached everywhere) not being ones to complain we just got on with it, the palce stank of damp and the patio doors could not be opened to let some fresh air in, we decided to go out.
Thinking about it we should have billed them for the cleaning costs.

We checked out on 30.07.08 three days early as our son of 6 years now has a chest infection caused by the dampness of the accommodation and our only week off in the year was a total disaster, please could someone explain where the award winning gumph on the website and brochure comes from because it is beyond belief that it was for the Golden Coast, the indoor pools changing room near reception was disgusting and stank like the local urinal and every where we looked was filthy. If I was you I wouldn't stay there if it was the last place on earth - unless you like filthy damp conditions.
I am still waiting for a reply to both emails that we have sent to the Manager - I don't hold out much hope if the site is anything to go by!!!
