loved it!!
from whelan
Arriving at this Hotel with 3 children in tow (all under 7)I wondered if we had done the right thing coming to a resort with no beach, water parks ect(my wifes idea!) However from walking through the door the Hotel staff were attentive and friendly. The food in the Hotel was good -loads of choice-particularly if you are willing to try different things. Not chips with everything!although if thats what you want they will accomodate. Kids loved the buffet style area where you can help yourself. This was followed by a choice of main course brought to your table which again was good. I enjoyed the choices of ice cream!! Pool heated within a beautifull setting surrounded by a herb garden trees and mountains. It rained a lot during our stay but the kids were happy still to go in. Childrens play corner where after dinner around ten children would play together safely. Zell is a lovely town -nice pedestrian area- boat tour around lake good as is the cable car ride up the mountain that domiates zell. If it rains a trip on the train to Salzburg is wonderful or try the community pool in town or even better the one in nearby Kaprun. If you like our lakes be prepared for Zell and the surrounding area to take your breath away with its beauty. Hotel and area exceeded my expectations-will definately retun- the Whelan family of Seaham Harbour.
Best Holiday Yet

A party of 7 of us has just returned from our first holiday in Austria, where we stayed in the Hotel Stadt Wien in Zell am See. The hotel was magnificent and we never experienced a hotel and service like it before. The selection of food was unbelieveable ; each evening you looked forward in anticipation as to what was on the menu. Even my 3 children aged 9, 6 and 3 loved the food (especially the unlimited ice cream). Zell am See is wonderful, exceptionally clean and well kept and so many beautiful eating establishments. The Austrian people are so friendly and trusting. We never felt so relaxed in our entire lives. We went on many excursions through Crystal Lake Tours. Each one very different and each one thoroughly enjoyable. We are extremely fussy about cleanliness and we felt it was a great novelty just to be able to walk down the street and step into the first cafe/restaurant we came across and be able to eat happily in it. We've never been in such a clean and well run country. Overall this was the best holiday we've ever had and for the first time we didn't want to come home.
Extremely well run hotel - ideal for families

We stayed at this hotel for 10 nights at the beginning of August. We booked the hotel direct and flew from Manchester to Salzburg with Skyeurope. The drive from Salzburg to Zell am See is about 95km and 1h 30m down a scenic dual carriageway. We were met by a friendly receptionist who showed us to our room which had a balcony looking down towards to lake (about 0.5 miles away). The road by the hotel is quiet and winds its way up towards the Smittenhoe – a smallish mountain with a cable car station and café at the top. The room had a fridge, safe, extra roll-out bed, double bed (two singles pushed together), a cot for out 19month old daughter, baby bath, nappy bucket and change mat. It was nicely furnished and appears to have had new carpets recently. The bathroom was quite small, but more than adequate, with a bath and shower over. The bed had the usual continental style pillows that you have to fold in half to get any comfort! TV in the room was limited to CNN and MTV. The baby listening service that the hotel offers involves connecting their phone to your mobile – we didn’t bother working out how much this would cost using a UK mobile so went without. I would take our own baby monitor next time as the hotel bar is really nice. Breakfast was excellent every morning and included about 20 different cereals, yoghurts, eggs, many different types of bread, cooked meats, cheeses, juices, fresh fruit, hot drinks etc. The ‘Farmers Breakfast’ is served on a Sunday and includes bacon, sausage, mushrooms etc. The hotel has the added bonus of being able to make up lunch from the breakfast buffet or have lunch in the hotel (both for free). This was great and we did a combination of both. Dinner was always good and included a huge salad buffet as well as many different breads. The main course varied every day and included many tasty dishes including lamb, venison, wienna snitzel (thin breaded pork – very tasty!) to name but a few. There was also a BBQ on a Tuesday night which was excellent. I overheard one person in the restaurant explaining that she was a coeliac – the staff appeared very helpful in trying to accommodate her. Some people have said the drinks were expensive - Edelweiss Wheat Beer 500ml €3.5 (£2.50); Austrian Lager 500ml €3.00 (£2.11); Diet Coke 200ml €2.00 (£1.40); Mineral Water 300ml €2.00 (£1.40). The soft drinks were expensive but I thought the beer wasn’t too bad. My only real complaint about the restaurant, or at least where we were seated, was that is was a little cramped and we had to manoeuvre between tables to get to the buffet. There is just one internet terminal in the hotel which is free but sometimes had a bit of a queue. The spa at the hotel is split into two: one side consists of the outdoor pool, steam room, salt room (similar to the steam room), relaxation area (comfortable loungers), splash pool for kiddies and showers. This was a really nice area but the swimming pool and splash pool were a little too cold for a toddler. The other side is the sauna (all naked – no exceptions!!!) and includes a warm sauna, hot sauna, showers and relaxation area. This side only opens between 3:30 and 6:30. There is a kiddies ball pool room with a slide, and a play corner with soft toys, games, puzzles. Really good to entertain our little girl! The outdoor area includes a slide, trikes, sand pit and swings. The pony, donkey and guinea pigs are also found here. This is a very well run hotel and the owner was always checking to make sure everything was ship-shape. Some of the staff looked a little weary and over-worked! There are lots of things to do in and around Zell am See. We found the local swimming pool was great for toddlers; VERY clean and warm! It has a slide, diving board and splash pool. Walking, cable cars, wildlife zoo (great fun), boat trips etc. Zell is really nice at night for a drink in one of their pavement cafes. Consider buying a Salzburgerland Card which then gives you free entry to cable cars, swimming pools etc. Couples looking for a quieter, more exclusive hotel might consider the Tirolerhof or Grand. These are both more central. I would definitely recommend this hotel for families and hope to visit again.
Lovely Hotel

Was nervous going to this hotel as there were a few negative reviews. What a lovely surprise, we had a lovely room which was extremely clean and a balcony. The food was lovely, you could make a packed lunch from the breakfast buffet we didnt take drinks from the buffet except for a small amount of juice in my sons beaker. Can see why they may tell people not to take drinks as some people were filling up bottles of juice from the buffet which is taking the mick. We were charged for tap water but a one off charge of no more than 2 euros. we questioned this and they said this was purely for the service and you could have as much water as you wanted for the duration of your stay ours was for one week maybe its 4 euros for two weeks, i didn't feel this was excessive. Lots of choice for the evening meal with large salad buffett and bread also liked the fact they had a freezer with a variety of ice creams, cones and wafers for the children and a different fresh sauce each day too so if you didn't like the pudding on offer there was always ice cream. I would definately go to this hotel again.

surprised at some of the negative comments posted. the hotel will accept credit cards to pay the bill if you payed the deposit by credit card although they are charged 3% commission by the banks and are not allowed to pass that charge on. I found the staff courteous and helpful, they will drive you to the station at the end of your stay foc. The food was fine breakfast was particularly good. drinks are expensive but find me a hotel that doesn't over charge for beverages. overall I found this hotel good value, particularly if you are travelling as a single parent and I would definitely return again. My only complaint is with the donkey! Ask for a room on the other side of the hotel, The Austrian band one night a week would be heaven compared to being woken up every morning at sunrise by the heehaw of the donkey!
Not very good
from karenbonnamy
We were dissapponted with this hotel. The main thing was the 4 euro charge for a jug of tap water( same as a glass of wine). Bottled wine was very expensive!!Also the pool was small, sauna was turned off too early and the Austrian band played until 11pm below our balcony. Food was ok but the choice of free kids drinks very odd(Ice tea or elderflower). Got told off for taking drinks away from breakfast buffet. Was alarmed when I saw someone get charged for a plate breakage in the restaurant!!Shame because its the worst place we`ve stayed in Austria

Had problems with the size of the rooms, told we could move for part week only, found staff not very friendly, food not 4*, others complined as well, will not be going back to this hotel. Room to small to photograph.
Excellent hotel with delicious food !!!

We have just returned from an 11 night stay at the Stadt Wien in Zell am See. Overall we felt the hotel was excellent. The rooms were nice and kept spotlessly clean every day. The staff were also very corteous and helpful. The Vitality Oasis is a lovely relaxing area with pool, steam rooms, sauna and very comfy sun loungers. The food was a definite plus point, different every night, 5 courses with lots of choice, if you are a fussy eater you will have no problem here. The hotel welcomed children and my daughter and cousins had a fantastic time. The hotel is situated on an incline at the rear of the resort and is a 5 minute walk from the town centre. Lots to do in the resort and a good central point for the choice of excursions ( most places about 1 hour away). Austria is a fabulous country with stunning scenery and should we visit Zell in the future we will definitely consider returning to the Stadt Wien !
will not be returning

Have just returned after 10 days at Hotel Stadt Wien. We enjoyed our stay, however events at checkout somewhat soured our impressions of the hotel and we will not be returning. The hotel does not accept credit cards. I settled our bill totalling 1500.00 euros IN CASH! and they quibbled over a 44cent phone call that we did not make. We were married at this hotel and paid a lot of money out in total for our party of 13, yet at checkout we were treated very badly. I cant believe for the sake of what amounts to 30 pence they argued and accused us of lying. Rooms were not like any of those shown in pictures on their web site. Ours was sparsely furnished but large it should have been a superior room.It was not of superior standard. The methods of paying bar bills is fraught with danger. At breakfast each morning you are expected to sign for the previous days drinks. On several occasions our bill was wrong with things like 4 cocktails at 30 euros appearing on one room. This was something obvious how many other drinks did we miss? Comments in the guest book on the whole good although a number spoke about the standard of the rooms and about the honesty of the owners!! When we made a comment about our checkout experince the owner advised my husband she would remove the page!! thats how honest they are.

Stadwein Hotel is a fantastic family run hotel with wonderful hospitality, super facilities and great food. would definately stay again but avoid a room on the noisy first floor - the only drawback to a great week. Took our two children and they loved the pool area and... more
