Last March I booked a skiing holiday for my family for Christmas with Thomson. I was hoping for a white Christmas in a picturesque setting and to fulfil a promise to my children (now 21 and 19) to take them skiing. I had very high hopes and expectations as I wanted this to... more

Worth a look

Very nice Hotel, good location about 5 minutes walk from the lifts. Good size pool, very nice rooms, good food and service
good location
from mf300
we booked with travel company -half board as the only option available. The location is excellent, a short walk from the town away from the noise, we had a room at the front with good sized balcony. you can hear the river outside and the view is of the hillside and trees opposite. in common with most austrian hotels no A/C so we kept open our french doors and slept well. Also the staff, in particular the reception were very helpful. The room was well laid out but is ready for a bit of an update esp the bathroom. The food was not that good compared to other austrian hotels i have stayed in and the arrangement of sitting in the same table which were too close to other tables meant we didnt enjoy the evening that much - we ate out a couple of nights.
Great hotel in picturesque resort

Very late in posting this review. Stayed at the St Georg in August 2006 following a week in Bled, Slovenia. Hotel was extremely picturesque, about 7 minutes uphill from the main town, with a rushing river outside. We had booked a front facing room with balcony and were delighted with it. Unfortunately, even in August, it was a little too cool to sit outside in the evening. Spotlessly clean with a lovely bathroom. Very rarely do we book holidays with a tour operator, but this particular holiday we travelled with Thomsons on a compulsory half-board basis. The dinners were superb at the hotel, but I do so wish that these companies would give people the option of choosing the meal arrangements. We would have loved to have eaten out at any one of the huge selection of restaurants in Zell am Zee, but instead had to sit at the same table every night. We questioned the representative from Thomsons as to why on all the hotels in Zell am Zee featured in their brochure were on a half board basis and they explained that most guests actually prefer this arrangement! Why oh why do people want to eat in the same place every night? Zell am Zee is a great base to explore this area of Austria. We caught the gondola up to the Schmittenhohe twice and walked back down along different routes. We caught a little train from Zell station to the Krimml Falls, we had a lovely round the lake walk, we also took a trip to the Grossglockner and a trip to the Eagle's Nest and Berteschgaden. I would recommend this hotel to anyone, but would book independently next time.
Decent hotel for a skiing holiday
from MonikaB
Stayed here with a group of 10 friends for a skiing holiday. The rooms are a decent size but the decor is a little tired - the bathrooms have recently been refurbished. The service at reception, in the restuarant and bar was very good - Sabina and Carl were outstanding. The food in the restaurant was of a good standard and the choice was reasonable. Only real let down was the fitness centre: 1 exercise bike, a weights machine and a work out mat - the saddle adjustment on the bike was broken rendering it unusable (reported it but it wss not mended immediately). The pool is Ok if a little small - 7 strokes each way.... Good base for activity holidays.
Lovely Hotel

We have just returned from a great skiing holiday in Zell am See, staying at the Hotel St Georg. This hotel is lovely, it is family run and has an authentic Austrian feel - our room had a nice view over the village and mountains (ask for a room at the front of the hotel). The staff were all very friendly and the food in the restaurant was excellent. The hotel is situated in a quiet position - it is approx 5-10mins walk (up a hill) from the lake, and is also very close to the City Express gondola so is convienient for getting up onto the mountain for skiing. This was our first skiing holiday - we would definately recommend the local skischool for excellent tuition. The mountain scenery in the area is beautiful, we look forward to visiting again next year!!

Hotel St. Georg. Zell am See Date: December 2006 Reviewer: Couple and adult son from Ireland We have just returned from a week in the St. Georg and we were very disappointed. It did not live up to the expectations we had of a four star hotel. The food was only average but we expected more as it was advertised as one of Austria's 100 best restaurants. We've had far better in other hotels in Austria. Our rooms (one double and one single) were small, particularly the single which was like a dark cell. The bathrooms were ridiculous and the bath, which was no more than three feet long , was a joke. Most of the staff were very pleasant but they are struggling with poor facilities. We would not recommend this hotel but the resort is excellent and well worth a visit. The Tirolerhof, which is also a four star hotel, is a far better option in our opinion.
Fantastic hotel

Best ski resort hotel i have ever stayed in. Great location, excellent food, lovely rooms.
Disappointed
from Nic1234
We recently returned from a week's stay at the St George, which we found disappointing. Our room was clean, but did not have a warm or cosy atmosphere, and was very noisy due to being alongside a busy road and a noisy waterway. The walk to the town and lakeside was ok, but always felt like a slog on the way back, being 10 minutes uphill. Most disappointingly, we found the food to be distinctly average, not at all the gourmet feast we had been expecting.
It's the little things that make a difference

We have just returned from a week in Zell am See, staying at the St. Georg Hotel. The food was excellent and the service, second to none. We highly reccommend this hotel, set in a quiet location yet only about 5 mins stroll into town. Not only was the food excellent, the personal attention and excellent service provided by dedicated staff made all the difference between a 'good' holiday and a 'great' one. The Sauper family and team really do care about their guests. Everyone who looked after us was geniunely pleasant, helpful, understanding and patient! Our room was a little tired, but was spotlessly clean and comfortable. The overall atmosphere within the hotel was relaxing and we would definitely return. Dinner was normally 5 courses and one night even 6 but somehow the sensibly sized portions allowed you to enjoy the entire meal without needing to be rolled away from the table! We were skeptical of spending a whole week half-board but the variety and quality in the menu meant we didn't get bored. If you are planning a visit to Zell am See, you really should consider this hotel.

The Hotel St. Georg is one of the nicest hotels I've stayed at, and easily one of the best bargains I've had the pleasure to come across. I would absolutely stay there again (I'm already making plans). The best parts: great big rooms, great price (esp. during the shoulder season - Fall), great meals (included in the half board), nice quiet location. The hotel staff was amazing, it's family owned, I think, and everyone was super. The downside: it was not so easy to find the hotel and make a reservation, and if you're going to Zell am See for skiing, it's a little bit of a trek to the ski lift, though I'm not sure how they work it during the winter. There's tons to do in the area, but surprisingly, the tourist areas were not crowded at all. Zell makes for an easy starting point for many sights, such as the Kaprun glacier / summer skiing, Krimml, etc. BTW, the meals were more than nice, I mean they were super gourmet meals.

Been to Hotel St Georg five times! Went in 2002 and have been every year since, sometimes twice a year! Even got married there this June 07. The staff are very friendly and helpful, Mrs Sauper and her family are excellent. The food is of five star standard. Everything... more
