We spent 2 weeks in Austria this year starting on the Tuesday before Feb half term and ending the Tuesday after half term. We spend 10 days in Zell Am See and 4 days in neighbouring Kaprun.
This review is regarding the 10 days in Zell Am See.
This is our third trip to Zell Am See because we love the ski-ing and the people. Zell has brilliant snow making facilities which we had to make use of this year as there wasn't much snow.
Location: Zell is an old medieval chocolate box village. There are plenty of shops and restaurants and it sits next to Lake Zell so is also good for summer holidays.
Hotel: We stayed in the Gruner Baum apartments in the centre of the town but could also make use of all of the hotel facilities. There was some noise at night from people coming in from bars and clubs.
This was the cheaper of the 2 hotels that we stayed in but we were very satisfied with the accommodation and the food. By staying in the apartments you can be very flexible with your food arrangements as long as you let them know up front.
We arranged for half board for the first 4 days and bed and breakfast for the next 6. We found the waitresses to be absolutely first class and we couldn't fault the food.
Cost: Quite reasonable for the time of year. Various offers that can be found on their website. The cost of travel was really cheap through thomsonfly.com as we avoided the Saturday flight rush!

Very Clean. Very Friendly. Great Facilities and Service.
Food 10/10 and Bar one of the best in the town.
Ideally located to the Ski Resorts - Surprised this wasn’t a 4/5star accommodation.
Recommended for young, old, friends, and family as it caters for everyone (we visited in a party of 14 year after year - not one has a bad word against this hotel).
Thanks.

We spent a week in Zell am See at the Gruner Baum in October 2006, and I was more than satisfied with our stay. The food is excellent, as is the service. The staff are without exception friendly and helpful, and we were made to feel like regular VIPs.
The rooms a re very comfortable, and the beds are the most comfortable of any hotel I have stayed in. The decor is very clean and traditional, while the Gasthaus/pub on the ground floor is so comfortable and welcoming that the main problem is leaving and going to bed.
A special word of thanks for the reception, bar and dining room staff for making our holiday so enjoyable.

I and my husband married here in November 2004, it was perfect, and staff were wonderful, it was very quiet, off season I think, so the resort was not full, basically had the place to ourselves. We made full use of all the spa facilities too, absolutely wonderful.
I would thoroughly recommend this hotel to anyone, infact we are returning there in a few months for our friends wedding. I look forward to returning for a skiing trip.

Between us my partner and I have enjoyed three summer holidays at this wonderful hotel. Our twin rooms have all been spacious, cosy and spotlessly clean with plenty of wardrobe space, TV, phone and balcony and clean ensuite bathrooms with bath, shower and hairdryer.
Any problems (few) were dealt with immediately. The staff are efficient, friendly and helpful and many speak very good English. The buffet breakfast is a banquet and the three course evening meal offers a vegetarian choice plus daily salad buffet.
The hotel’s central location makes it an ideal choice for those who prefer to be in the heart of a resort yet it is only five minutes walk from the lake and six or seven minutes walk from the railway station, which is on the Innsbruck - Salzburg line, making it easy to visit other resorts. It is also only a few minutes walk from the bus station (daily buses to Grossglockner and Krimml Waterfalls), the Zeller Bergbahn, the tourist information office and local shops and supermarkets. There is a small lido by the lake with lockers, toilets, showers and a cafe and you can hire umbrellas and sunloungers.
On Wednesdays there is a festival in the town square (a minute’s walk from the hotel) with food and drink stalls, musicians and street entertainers. Sometimes there is a festival by the lake with fireworks in the evening. We will return to Zell am See again and when we do we will be staying at the Hotel Gruner Baum!
