Good rooms, attitude and restaurant could do better at times
from Jester77
I was in the restaurant quite a couple of times as this was a preferred hotel to bring guests into. Stayed there a couple of times when things got late, usually as a walk-in. The rooms are clean, quite big and high quality, so I would recommend the place. Things to look out for, though: - While I had really good breakfasts and dinners there, I ran into a really bad meal once. - Personell is usually friendly, but at times I ran into some employees (always the same ones) that are rather unfriendly and should reconsider whether the hospitality business is right for them.
Delightful Relaxed Atmosphere
from BlossomAmbrose
I was SO astounded when I read some of the reviews on this hotel, that I had to send in mine! My husband and I, with our daughter, stayed in this hotel early last summer for a week and thoroughly enjoyed our experience. The night we arrived, it was past evening meal time, and we expected to be given a snack of sandwiches or such like, but No, we were set down to a beautiful hot meal, side salad, and desert. The staff were always very helpful whenever we stopped by to inquire about "anything" ! Can I also recommend their traditional "Apple Struedal" - it is absolutely "out of this world" - I can taste it yet !!! We loved the fact that our rooms were decorated in typical "Austrian" style - it gave the place a lovely "homely" feel. The bedroom, and bathroom was fab., and spotlessly clean. Would have absolutely no problem going back, and would certainly recommend it to anyone!
First time skiers
from wayne56
As first time skiers we found out stay at Zum Hirschen hotel very pleasent. We went in a small group and didn't know what to expect from a skiing holiday. The food in the hotel was very good. Wide choice at dinner and breakfast. Lots of time in the evening to eat and relax at your table. The staff were very pleasent and friendly helping whenever needed. Hotel located on a busy road but we didn't find the traffic noise a problem at night. The rooms were double glazed. Close to the city express lift which was useful expecially when your feet hurt from the previous day of skiing! The boot room was quite small for the amount of people using it and sometimes was hard to find your boots when your in a rush the following morning. (useful to have a label on your boots) The swimming pool/spa was small but not much time to go in it anyway so was suitable for our use. Rooms were quite a good size but could do with a bit of refurbishment and modernisation. Basic bathroom but good wardobe space and living area. Overall had a great time staying in zell am see. Would return to this hotel if we were to go back to this resort.
There is a lot better in Zell at this price!
from CG2006
I must say I was very disappointed with our experience at the Zum Hirschen this January. We have been to Zell a number of times and always thought that it looked like a nice hotel. some of our friends have stayed there before and they really liked it. Maybe we expected too much. Our room was sold to us as a "Junior Suite" and we paid a premium for this but the overall standard of the room was quite poor. Granted it was large but the bed was uncomfortable and the bathroom basic. I would guess that it had not been decorated for at least 10/15 years. I have stayed in many ski resorts so I don't think I am being unfair in my criticism of the basic nature of the room. I would expect a touch more luxury from a "superior " 4 star hotel. I know I'm being picky but there wasn't even a shower cap in the bathroom and our toiletteries were 2 sachets of shower gel! My biggest problem with the hotel is the road noise. Every night I was awoken by traffic noise. Due to the position and shape of the hotel this problem would effect a large number of the rooms. In general I found the atmosphere in the hotel not a friendly as others in the town. The food is good. Not as good as I would expect having read previous reviews. In all we were reasonably happy with the hotel but it failed to justify the price which tends to leave you with a bad taste in your mouth. We probably won't return -there are better places nearby!
A lovely hotel
from G_I_JillGlasgow
Our experience at this hotel last week was second to none. Despite what negative commentsothers have said about the staff, we found them to be very friendly and eager to please. (Although the older lady who I assumed to be the owner was a little stern, but I think this keeps the other staff in check!) Anyone who got told off for going in the restaurant entrance only has themself to blame as the entrance is clearly labelled "restaurant," with a sign to the hotel entrance round the back. Clearly, anyone who stomps into the restaurant in their snowy ski gear will not be looked upon very kindly - it's only common sense not to do such a thing. The food was AMAZING! Great quality, they obviously had an excellent chef. There was usually a few locals in the bar, for their apres ski or for a meal - I think this is a good sign as it means the hotel food is respected locally. The room was very spacious with a separate seating area and lots of storage space and lots of room to dry out wet gear. Ski equipment is stored in the drying room so your boots are all dry when you put them on inthe morning. The spa area, which I usually find in small hotels is inadequate, was very very nice. Despite the small size of the pool there are a couple of blowers which create a current that you can swim against and which double as massage device! Great after a hard day onthe slopes. As with the rooms and other areas, it was spotless. One side of the hotel is on the main street through the town, which i suppose could be noisy. We were round the back though still not far from the road and kept a window open all night, no issues with noise really. It's a 100m walk to the City Express ski lift. Very close. It was great, I'd go back in a second.
Traffic noise in bedroom, dont open windows.
from yorkshirelass07
should have a warning about TRAFFIC NOISE. no comfortable area to sit after a long day. hard benches. the 5 soft chairs were reserved 2 evening for the locals to watch football. smoked filled area. also smoking area around the salard buffet. be warned do not use the front enterance. dining room staff very good and helpful. rooms clean, meals become alittle boaring, fish served once in 10days, although we requested it again and the waitress did get us fish on another 2 days.
Great location
from A TripAdvisor Member
This hotel is in a good location - at the top of the pedestrianised area, about 100 metres from the main square and 200 metres from the lake. There is a busy through road one side of the hotel, and it can be noisy here. Everything around town is walkable. A couple of cable car stations would need a short busride (but at least one is located right in town). In summer one can walk, cycle, or take a boat around the lake, and there are many nice areas to walk or sit people-watching. When we were there, there were several events which locals enthusiastically arranged and took part in e.g. a ride around the lake on old bicycles and in traditional or fancy dress, with live music and entertainment all day. Also an evening of street entertainment in the square and around the lanes and passageways. There are loads of reasonably priced bars and restaurants to choose from. Our bedroom in the hotel was large with a separate seating area and loads of hanging space. No facilities for coffee/ tea making though. The room was kept very clean and the staff were very friendly - anxious to please. Reception was always staffed, and answered the usual tourist questions with enthusiasm. We enjoyed excellent meals (on half board) with good selection. The breakfast was buffet - usual cold meats and cheeses, cereals, fruit etc. You could have hot (e.g. scrambled eggs and bacon) but need to ask. This is a family run hotel, and the owner and wife were often seen wandering around and would always say hello. We enjoyed staying here and would certainly go back.
Not good
from First_time_skier
Here is what disappointed me the most: - Smoking, smelly room even though non-smoking one was requested; - Staff tended to be rather arrogant and unfriendly than welcoming; - Let me skip the food, maybe someone else would be able to enjoy it; - On departure day, confirmed (!) wake up call (6am) never rang - which, honestly was the last straw... The only plus would be hotel's location - literally two steps from the lifts. Definitely not going back.
incredibly rude staff
from mickeycallaghan
The hotel was very nice as was the food but the owners were unbelievably rude. We arrived christmas eve expecting a warm welcome however as we walked through the door of the hotel we were shouted at by the owner as we were not supposed to use the front entrance of the hotel ??? Apparently it was an entrance for the restaurant only, there was no sign or notice to tell you this. They were incredibly rude for the remainder of the week. Wouldn't go back to this hotel.
Fantastic
from Radi
What a beautiful town, hotel, people, night lift. This is the perfect location for any type of holiday, during the summer months there is a beautiful lake you can go swimming in, cycling and walking paths are very popular also. And then of course 10 minutes away you can go ski-ing!!! The Hotel Zum Hirschen was lap of luxury, food was mouth watering, staff extremely polite and helpful, our room was extremely large and a fantastic bathroom. As you can gather from the above all I can say is forget the "sun holidays" and go Zell an See and experience what this town has to offer you.
We have just returned from a one week stay at this hotel and to say we were disappointed is an under statement!!! We were in Zell am See for a friends wedding and this hotel completely ruined what would have otherwise been a fantastic holiday. On arrival at the hotel the... more
