Aug 2008, Miss A Elliott

I stayed at kathys in august last year with my fiance and it was AWFUL... there were cockroaches in the downstairs bedrooms, the room service was terrible (let alone the rooms)... someone was sick in the (tiny) pool and all they did was scooped out the lumps... the only food they serve is cheese and ham toasties or cheese and ham pizza... and the staff were really unhelpful! (i am not someone to moan just about anything but if you stayed at this place you would completely agree) take my advice DO NOT GO THERE!!!

I stayed in Kathy's apartments in...

Sep 2007, parrot-annie

I stayed in Kathy's apartments in Rhodes in August of this year (2007). While I was there, everyone but one young woman despised the place, and we all just wanted to go home.
Rooms were crawling with cockroaches, there were no decent local holiday amenities, and the apartments were grubby to say the least. I hated it!
The holiday rep was overwhelmed with complaints. The lift was always jamming between floors. The self catering equipment in my room consisted of a teaspoon, a giant pan, a broken cup, and a side plate.
Anyone who was able to move out did. I myself moved to a lovely hotel about 50 yards away from my last 2 nights (at my own expense) because I couldn’t bear to spend another night at Kathy's.
My room at Kathy's wasn’t cleaned once while I was there, and I had to dispose of my own rubbish in the overloaded giant bins outside the apartments. The wardrobe in my apartment could not be used as it stank of rot.
There was a giant cements works at the side of the apartments, and at the front of the apartments was a large area of dried up dirty wasteland, and in front of that was a building site.
The best thing about the area was the open air cafe about two minutes away, called No Problems. The Old guy there and his wife were fabulous.
I made friends at Kathy's with other unfortunate holiday makers; we were just united in grief at the horrible place we had come to. It was terrible, just terrible.

Sep 2007, Ms P Pettit

Its just like everyone says, it was horrible my first night I couldn't sleep due to having cockroaches, they was that big you could have put them on a lead and walked them. The pool was filthy they never cleaned it, even when someone was sick in it. I got a rash from the bed sheets, my partner had to go find our son a bed to sleep in because at 11.30 at night they had not sorted it out when they said they would. All we got from the staff who worked there was abuse because we had complained about the filth, I had things pinched and when reported, all they said was- not my problem go to the police.
After the first week all the students came back and the place looked like a bomb site because every corridor was filled with boxes of belongings blocking fire exits for days, we had to squeeze past dirty boxes every night just to get out of our room, that was just the apartment the local area was just as bad, we were in the middle of a building site, had to laugh when the rep said there was plenty of things for kids to do, we couldn't even go to the beach cos that was a building site also. I could go on loads.
I would stay well clear of this place it could do serious damage to your health.

Just returned from Olympic Holiday in...

Just returned from Olympic Holiday in Rhodes at Kathy’s Hotel. We were allocated on arrival. 20 of us (four family groups) left the first day and found other accommodation conditions were so bad.
Hotel dirty and unsafe - the lift failed between floors when we were in it, sellotape holding up shower, pools of water on floor, broken sharp tiles, dirty sinks, ripped curtains, non functioning air-con, stickers on cupboards, black lumps of dried skin on floors etc. Other people reported filthy fridges, dangerous wiring, dirty sinks, dirty (very small) swimming pool.
No help or support from Olympic Holidays staff (except for 3 hours of form filling for those prepared to make official complaints). The Olympic local staff know it is bad: "We would move you if we could but we have no spare rooms". "You are not the first to complain" from local manager.
TERRIBLE LOCATION
Seems Olympic have taken over this commercial hotel (mainly used by Greeks returning to visit relatives) - surrounded by semi-industrial area with shipyard, agricultural suppliers, transport company, building sites and big area of derelict land - temporarily this season because so many of us are trying to get some sun.
It is a good 30 minute walk - no joke in the 30 degrees heat - from the town centre itself, past a topless club, derelict factories and abandoned commercial properties. The nearest beach is part of major building and redevelopment programme funded by EU, with construction in progress and large earth-movers at work.

It’s the area that was bad! The apartments are very very basic but I was chatting to other people at different apartments and they all sounded the same, 2 ring electric cooker attached to a sink an fridge.
Our room was fine but I understand some other people wasn’t as lucky as us.
The area upset most people, industrial site slum whatever you want to call it.
The staff were lovely the bar is 24hours (personally not for me) little pool, nothing for kiddies really, no entertainment at all even locally.
Good cafe over the road 'no problem', did all kinds of food for everyone.
But anyone going here, it is a disappointment but do what we did. Go out and make your own holiday. Good luck if anyone is going.

In over 20 years of travelling abroad...

Aug 2007, Mr A Smith

In over 20 years of travelling abroad we have never stayed in such a hole. How the hotel got 2* I will never know.
Absolutely no cleanliness what so ever in 2 weeks of staying there, the beds were only changed once, the bins were not emptied once. Had to take them down to reception every day, no clean towels were available unless you went and got them from the cupboard on the landing, and rubbish was left outside of rooms for days.
The bathrooms were absolutely filthy. The kitchen area was a joke no pots, pans cups, plates, knives or forks jus what you need when it’s supposed to be self catering the fridges had mould growing in them and sounded like a motor bike when switched on, good for keeping the kids awake all night.
The pool really hygienic. When the air conditioning units were dripping into the pool everyone who dared to go in were guaranteed sore eyes or bad ears just what you need when you’re on holiday.
No entertainment what so ever, staff not welcoming at all. Only time they spoke was if they thought you were going to give them some money for something.
All in all if you’ve booked for Kathy’s or thinking of going save your money and stay away or if you want a dirty weekend, then you’re going to the right place.

I would like to bet that whoever passed these studios never actually slept there. They are disgusting.
The smelly, stained bed mattress had no mattress cover and the pillows were brown and mine was bloodstained. I asked the rep to get them replaced but there wasn’t a clean one in the place.
After the fourth day of asking for a maid to clear the dead cockroaches from my bathroom and around the fridge area, I had to get a brush and pan and do it myself. The fridge was broke so they had to turn it off so I had no use of the two cooking rings as it was off the one switch. I was given a small chiller fridge but it didn’t work either.
There is only one young maid to do 52 rooms so you can imagine the dirt as in the ten days she only emptied the toilet bin twice. The sheets were never changed. The litter outside my sitting area was still there when I left.
There are notices up in reception telling you to buy insect plugs but the one socket in my room was cracked and placed the wrong way anyway, as when the plug was in it was sideways so the oil/tablet fell straight out.
There is a cement works practically next door so if you have a chest complaint think twice.
The pool was never checked and the overflow from the studios ran directly into the pool. There is very little space for the few sunloungers so don’t expect a leisurely day around the pool. (walled on two sides and just a walkway around the rest) A 24 hour bar so don’t expect any sleep. Apart from the bar noise echoing in the corridors the plumbing problems make things difficult as well.
These studios are used by students in the off season but it is definitely not a Hotel for a holiday. It is a pity because the location is fine with the beach not far, supermarkets and the welcome launderette.
I also had no air-conditioning for two days as water was pouring out from the actual unit. It soaked the bed and flooded the floor, but it made me grateful that I had little maid cleaning as the mop was black.
Take plenty of air fresheners and disinfectants and don’t expect even two star facilities.

What can I say Kathy’s Studios made...

Aug 2007, Mr T Lawrence

What can I say Kathy’s Studios made Fawlty Towers look like the Hilton!
Classed as a two star apartment was an insult to holiday makers intelligence, even the rep that picked us up to take us back to airport commented on how bad the place was.
Dangerous pool, snooty staff, no where to eat was like being on building site absolutely terrible. The only good thing, lovely little restaurant over road called " NO PROBLEM".
Apart from that avoid at all costs!

Booked the holiday at Cathy's Studios...
1 / 10
Aug 2007, Hawks

Booked the holiday at Cathy's Studios Hotel, Rhodes Town, Rhodes on the Olympic Holidays web site. The holiday was cheap and the hotel was only a 2* so wasn't expecting too much, but what we got was the worst holiday I have had in 20 years.
Bathroom ceiling was covered with black mould, kitchen was less than basic with no kettle, and cutlery consisted of 4 spoons, 2 knives, and 2 forks. Nothing to cut bread or open tins.
Wardrobe had no coat hangers, bedding was grey rather than white, and towels were more often than not frayed and torn.
Cleaning was sporadic, we were there for 2 wks and I cannot say what the hotel policy was on room cleaning, it started at 3 days between the first clean we then had a couple of days between the next two, we then had 3 days of a cleaner every day but the holiday was finished off with a 4 day no cleaner period.
The pool is small as stated but is in shade until mid afternoon, it was often unusable due to the amount of chlorine, and the filter cover was often open leaving a dangerous opening in the middle of the pool. Balcony drainage pipes poured into the pool, this was probably only water from air con but could be anything.
The bar was open 24hrs but prices were expensive for Greece. Staff on reception were not particularly helpful or friendly, on requesting a remote control for the air con it wasn't until the 3rd trip from room to reception did I get a remote that worked.
We were advised that our first week was the first week Olympic had put any tourists in this hotel which had been a student accommodation for the nearby University.
The hotel is situated 30 minutes walk from old Rhodes town in a semi industrial / semi suburban district with a cement and builders merchants across the street. There is a beach within a 5 min walk and once on the beach it is not too bad with a mainly sandy consistency. Unfortunately you have to cross a 15 yard construction ribbon that rings the beach with heavy machinery working at certain times of the day.
And finally for us the worst is that you will never get a full night of sleep. The building is not constructed to dampen any noise and with people shouting and banging doors from 10pm through to 6am.
This was more a torture than a holiday.
