Oia Mare Villas

All the posts about the view and location are right on. It was nice to enjoy the sunset from our balcony while almost everyone else on the island had to climb the hill behind the hotel to watch it. We spent an afternoon by the pool and it was relaxing with a spectacular view. Oia is great.. heads and tails above Fira for us... much more charming. We stayed for six nights at Oia Mare, and it was wonderful. We were family of four and our cave villa was quite large. Two separate bedrooms and full kitchen, dining area including separate patio. The villa area is about 100 steps toward Amoudi Village (great little fishing village) 300 steep steps total - just take it slow!. But, you do need to be in good shape to wander and visit....steps everywhere. We considered ourselves fairly fit, and struggled sometimes on the stairs. I would like to say that our short stay of 5 days in June of 2005 at Oia Mare was unbelievable. We still talk about Oia Mare almost every day. Unforgetable rooms with the best view in the world. This is the ultimate Santorini experience! We recommend these villas to all our friends and family traveling to Santorini. Do not expect luxury but a very relaxing place, with cave like villas. We chose the Oia Mare because it had been recommended by our friends and we wanted a romantic place to stay. The cave setting right by the sunset certainly delivered the romantic setting that we had hoped for. That said, the hotel was not inexpensive, and some of the perks that we expected to come with that price certainly were not there. The shower was slightly moldly and overflowed with water. We arrived on 4 October after only booking on the 29 September. We read the reviews after we had booked the accommodation and we were pleased with our choice. It was everything we expected it to be and in some ways better. The setting and peaceful atmosphere is quite simply wonderful. The accommodation is unusual as we stayed in a cave dwelling. Oia Mare Villas exceeded any expection I could ever have about a hotel. It is set in the most romantic and magnificent location I have ever experienced. Everything the following reviews say is completely accurate. Get ready for a hike, but the amazing pool is waiting and it's all worth the trek to get to this place. Oia Mare has got to be the best place to chill out & to watch the infamous sunsets in Oia. Although I have seen better sunsets. Tourists are ferried in by the bus load to watch the sunset, lining the streets & roofs of local houses & the Oia Mare. Stay on your balcony with your gin & watch it in comfort. The hotel has got to be the best place to just relax watch the donkey stagger up & down the steps & watch other tourists gawp with envy at you lying by the pool. My husband and I stayed at Oia Mare for 5 nights of our honeymoon. We were overwhelmed by the views and the quaintness of the whole area. The hotel is not easy to get to. We were met in the town by our donkey taxi, Marcus, and our luggage was transported down all the steps nad through all the shops. This was our first impression of Greece and one we will not soon forget. People took pictures of the donkey and us following him down. My husband and I just returned from a trip to Santorini. We loved Oia Mare. It's not the Ritz Carlton if that's what you are looking for, but the location is unbelievably beautiful, the staff helpful and accommodating, and the rooms/caves CHARMING and full of character. Notes: Upon arrival we had a friendly welcome (and a small bottle of wine) from the staff. The hotel is the perfect spot to watch the famous Oia sunsets. As a teenager I saw the movie Summer Lovers and it was a dream to one day visit Santorini and stay in a traditional cave house, hanging off the side of the caldera with a beautiful view of the Aegean Sea and romantic sunsets. That dream came true in September, 2004 when my wife and I stayed at the Oia Mare Villas for 4 days.
