We loved our holiday at Le Hotel Mottaret. The staff were extremely helpful and efficient (in fact, nothing was too much trouble). The food was great, very French and different (we were more than happy to try anything new), very tasty and a wide selection. All in all, it... more

Location = 5+ Stars, centre of the three valleys with excellent access to ski slopes. Quick access to all three valleys, Meribel, Chourchevel & Val Thornes. When I return to the 3 Valleys, I would stay here again, based solely upon the excellent location. Price = Great... more

A lovely ski holiday had by all.
We booked our own package to Meribel Mottaret in January 2008.Booked cheap flight to Grenoble with Ryan air, hired appt, car hire prebooked with hertz, All great deals if you book in advance. Meribel was livelier with lots of apres skiand lots of shops selling similar stuff. Mottaret was much quieter and relaxing. Food not cheap so we tended to make our own breakfast, snack on hot paninis for lunch and eat out every other night to keep the costs down. Tried the public pool but it was quite cool so didn't stay in for long. YOU MUST DO THE EVENING SKI BIKES.-AMAZING AND WORTH EVERY PENNY. My parents were panicking but said they were so pleased we pressured them into it. our 8 and 5 year old sat between our legs and were allowed to take controls once we reached the circuit. Hired ski equip locally with no problem pre-booking online. Went for the dearer ski school snow d'light which was fantastic as we had our own private group and the other cheaper companies had much larger groups.i think i would have given up if i was in that group.besides it worked out cheaper as the lessons were for an extra day and an hour longer than the others. Our instructor JC was amazing and taught us all at our own pace.Almost one to one coaching, would highly recommend him.a lovely village but not lots of other things to do or places to go.
A bit disappointing......
The situation of the hotel le Mottaret is excellent, its more or less ski in and out with a nice gentle run into Meribel to get you warmed up each day. We stayed at Les Arcs 2000 last year and although its very big, architecturally unattractive and very basic - we were actually pleasantly surprised - mainly by the food! The food at Le Mottaret was distinctly average, with little or no choice. More or less a set menu - not ideal for teenagers who are eyeing up the pizza place in Mottaret!! Breakfast was a scrappy disorganised affair and didnt seem to have any real consistency. The rooms were very basic, tired and pretty used - although I have to say the beds were considerably more comfortable than Les Arcs! On the up side - the reception staff and bar staff were very hospitable and welcoming which is important after a days skiing. The Boot room was out of commission too and we had to drag our skis and boots up and down to our rooms each day. We stayed at La Marmotte in les Gets during the summer which was a charming hotel and to be recommended - I think we had hoped for a little more from Le Mottaret and were disappointed.
stayed here in february 2006
We stayed here in feb 2006 the hotel food was very good and the staff were helpful, rooms were a bit small for 3. The location on the slopes was very good. However the open fire filled the room with an eye streaming smoke and smell and we all felt very sleepy if we sat there for long enough. I complained about the smoke but they seemed to think it was OK. Has anyone else found the smoke a problem as I would go back if this problem is gone now.
Good hotel for young audience.
Brilliant Hotel this one. The rooms are a bit basic and we had to squeeze three of us into one tiny room but we spent no time in our rooms anyway. Mottaret itself is brilliant if a little quiet but has some fabulous bars and restaurants. Only a short bus ride to Meribel aswell. The skiing location is perfect as the best slopes in the Meribel area are on the Mottaret corner. Plus the hotel has a great looking barmaid who we had a good laugh with and the entire hotel staff were very accomodating. There is a really nice bar and chill out area with a pool table and open fire and some very comfy furniture. Also secure area for ski equipment. The food was average though but edible with plenty of choice. There may be better hotels in Meribel but to be nearer the best slopes with freindly staff then take this one. Probably better for a young friendship group rather than families with young children though.
Food was great
Had a superb week in hotel, food excellent and varied, even if a bit much cheese. Staff friendly, rooms basic, good location. Would stay again.
Excellent
Booked our ski holiday with travel agent and this was one of the only hotels in Meribel in our price range. It is in an excellent location as you walk across the road and ski down the nursery slope to all of mottarets lifts and it's only a short spin down a green slope to meribel from there. If you plan your day correctly you can ski back to the hotel so it really has an excellent location. The hotel also has an added bonus of having a ski shop right beside the front door so no trudging around for gear. The bar in the hotel is warm and comfortable, has a lovely open fire and sky sports. Breakfast is good, plenty of it and dinner is fantastic. Reveiws from last year stated that the food was terrible but they hired a new chef for this season and things have really improved. We had steak, salmon, filet mignon etc and everything was exceptional. It was so good we ate dinner in the hotel every night and weren't tempted to stray down town to any of the busy restaurants. We had a very nice warm room which is comfortable if a bit functional. Make sure you get a room with a bath as some rooms are a bit small and only have a shower. Quality of the staff varied depending on experience but all were very nice and polite and seemed to be doing their best. I would definitely consider staying here again next year
terrible place - if you want 3 * do not stay here
We booked a ski holiday here for my son's 21st birthday in March. We have stayed in many hotels in the Alps from 2 to 4 star. This hotel was a complete let down. The staff acted like it was their own club, drinking, smoking and playing pool in the bar. The accommodation was sub standard -we summarised as being closer to hostel accommodation than 3 star. Want to use the safe? They have to call the manager from the village and cannot say if she will be around when you need something out eg your passport. Food - appalling. Often no choice for breakfast, for example cabbage leaves stuffed with a variety of meat minces for main meal. Most of the time we left mid meal and ate elsewhere and often with other guests. Oh and take your own hairdryer - there was one to share amongst all 40+ rooms. One bed was held together with duck tape and the towels were so bad that a 1 euro coin was thicker that the towel. If you want a 'cheap' 3* hotel this is the place for you - compare it at the Mottaret tourist centre with other 3* hotels and you will find it is half the price if you pay locally. So take care if booking through a major travel company as we did! I toured the other 3 star hotels in Mottaret and Meribel - they were far superior. Our party of 4 cannot think of one good thing to say about this place.
Good location thats all.
Stayed for 2nd time in 2 years. In 2004 the food was fabulous hence the 2nd visit. Took some friends on a food promise. What a disapointment, the fare was very mediocre with a new chef in attendance. The first four nights were moderate to ok but after that it was not good. Meat balls, I have had better in Ikea. Stuffed courgette was an over cooked mush, plugged with what I presume was left of the meatballs from the night previous. Last night was buffet night, three main courses all cheese assosiated. What a disapointment from 2 years ago. Location is only good thing going with doorstep skiing.Rooms just ok, but I knew that. It was the thought of the excellent food that was the basis of a return visit. He that expects little etc!!!!!!!!!!!!
Excellent location, mediocre hotel
This is the 2nd time we have stayed here for our group ski holiday as the location is superb - a few steps away from the green slope that takes you down to Mottaret centre where all the main lifts start from. RECEPTION: - very friendly staff that speak english, french, german & Italian. NO LIFT: - so you will need to lug your baggage up the stairs. BEDROOM: - all have good views with balcony - some overlooking the slope infront of the hotel or others looking down over the Meribel Valley. All very clean, enough wardrobe space for our ski stuff, good heating and comfortable beds - mostly twin. All have ensuite Bathrooms which are quite small and separate WC. For an extra cost (around 100 Euros each) you can have a jacuzzi bath, but to be honest its not worth the extra money as that is the only extra you get. BAR/LOUNGE - huge armchairs and sofas are scattered around the lounge area with a log fire. There is also a pool table. The only thing that isn't so good is that it can get rather smokey in here in the evenings. RESTAURANT: Usually a 5 course evening meal. Soup, salad, main meal, cheese & desert. Food is OK - sometimes rather supprising ingredients ie. snow soup and wolf fish! Breakfast - informal, self service buffet - huge selection from croissants, pain au chocolate and cereals to boiled eggs, cheese & ham. There is a secure boot and ski room which is for residents only. I would reccommend this hotel for the location, but would say that it is a two to three star - not the height of luxury by any means, but reasonable value for money.
I would stay here again, based solely upon the excellent location.
Location = 5+ Stars, center of the three valleys with excellent access to ski slopes. Quick access to all three valleys, Meribel, Chourchevel & Val Thornes. When I return to the 3 Valleys, I would stay here again, based solely upon the excellent location. Price = Great value for the 3 Valleys. Rooms = 3 Stars, average rooms and some baths with jacuzzi tub. Rooms were clean and simple. Dining Room = 2 Stars, evening group dinner food was less than average, heavy with a lot of sauces. However, breakfast (3 Stars) was tasty and substantial. Bar = 3+ Stars, small, but staff was very friendly and provided good service.
