Thilanka Hotel

Stayed at this hotel for a couple of nights whilst touring. We were allocated a brilliant top floor room with stunning fews of Kandy. The hotel is close to the Temple of the Tooth, and also the beautiful Botanical Gardens. Our room was large, nicely furnished and with a balcony over looking the World Hertitage site of Kandy. The bathroom was a bit tired looking and lacked a hair dryer and sufficent towels, and the shower was a bit hit and miss with regards to temperature. We booked direct with the hotel and on arrival we were treated like long lost friends. The service was second to none. We were shown to our room which must have been the best room in the hotel. We were on the top floor in a corner room which had stunning views over Kandy and we even had our own monkey who visited our balcony a number of times during our stay! I was in Kandy Thilanka 2 weeks ago and I must say my stay there was nothing short of memorable. The staff was very courteous and friendly though not very conversant, the food was great (my personal fav was the freshly baked bread). The hotel has recently under gone some renovations, as such the resturant and rooms were equipped with all the modern amenities while keeping to its traditional charm. 2 thumbs up for the service as well. I would highly reccomend the hotel whoever is heading to Kandy. PS: pics to be added soon!

My wife and I and our two daughters (one with her Sri Lankan boyfriend) stayed at the Thilanka for four nights in June. (We booked through Red Dot Tours whom we found both friendly and practically helpful.) We liked it. We just returned from Sri Lanka 2 days ago and I have to say that Hotel Thilanka did not hold a lot of special memories for us. Travelling with my husband and 2 children (ages 7 & 12), we had booked 2 adjoining rooms. Staying on the 4th floor, we found the rooms nicely decorated, but pretty basic in some aspects. The doors/door knobs didn't seem to be all that secure - they appeared to be a bit cheap and without a safe in the room, I would not have kept any valuables inside. This hotel is very nice, the setting is perfect, overlooking Kandy, the pool is in a great position too. All the staff are extremely helpful and very friendly, pretty much, everyone is in Sri Lanka. There is a very good health/massage centre at the hotel which is well worth a visit. We stayed in a deluxe room which was really nice, however they do not offer much privacy. This locally-owned hotel sits high above Kandy with great views. It is just an exciting 300 rupee tuck-tuck ride to the local restaurants. The reception areas, bars, and restaurants are pleasant and spacious. The rooms not in the new wing are shabby but have the better views over over the city with a promenade with seating areas. The pool is small but pleasant again with great views. The food in the restaurant is the usual rice and curry buffet, but the a la carte is no more expensive and varied. i was very lucky to be staying in a superior room due to my aquaintence with a brother of the housekeeper. the hotel is very good quality and the staff very friendly. however, the food is very average, tho i found that to be the case for the whole of sri lanka so it may be a harsh criticism. BUT! beware - one day we were walking in the market area and were accosted by a man claiming to be the chef at the thilanka. with hindsight we should have been sharper but we were dragged around a poor quality spice market with some hard sales... more

If you have a room with a balcony - you'll have a marvellous view - be careful abt shutting the sliding doors as the monkeys can (and did) cause havoc in the room - service not too good and food's poor - small pool but not unpleasant - all in all, Ok for the price
