BUT !!!!!. It was nothing to with the staff or the food. We got there on the 6th Feb 2011 for a week. The only reason why it was our best skiing holiday was because of the weather, we never saw a cloud for the whole week we were there, and this is THE ONLY REASON why it was... more

We've just had a fantastic week at Le Viking. The location, at the top of the Pleney lift, is just perfect for a ski holiday. Walk out the door of the hotel, hop onto your skis and you're away. It's also only metres away from the ski school meeting points so if you're... more

Not the best
The hotel viking could be a really great place to stay, the location is great although the access gondola could do with being open later more nights a week as morzine has some very good bars and cafes. The rooms are small and the beds aren't the most comfortable. Ours had no balcony but the view was superb. they were cleaned daily but not very well, not once did we recieve fresh towels which isn't much use if your having a shower in the morning and a bath at night to relieve the aches and pains from a day on the slopes. There was mold on the bathroom and bedroom walls... the tv didn't work i was told this would be fixed twice but it didn't happen. We had to keep our skis in our room for the first 3 nights as the ski locker designated to our room had a padlock on it and the maintanance man was too busy to remove it.. The food was very good but the plates and glasses at breakfast were pretty dirty. The staff were possibly the nicest i have encountered, although not the most efficeint. they did struggle when the dinning room was busy. The hotel is definately for young families most people we spoke to return every year with there kids and think it's great. i wouldn't go back to the hotel but i would really like to go back to morzine. the area is missive and the week we went (1st week in March) the lifts were fairly quiet.
Had a fantastic time
I read many reviews before we went, so had some apprehension but we had a fantastic time. It IS a family hotel, and is perfect for families - not 5 star luxury, or 5 star service. If small rooms, lots of children and young staff drive you mad - don't go!! The food was very nice, enough choice for all, yes the children's meals were not always the best for choice, but they can eat later with the adults. Normally we found something they enjoyed. The staff are young, basically it is a catered chalet so they are run by youngsters, but all gave their best, were polite, very friendly and enthusiatic. If you do have a complaint though, do keep pressing them - one of our group complained about lack of hoovering in their room and nothing was done! Location could not be better, ski school is right outside the door, it is quite expensive for drinks etc, and luckily we were in such a big group we did not need any kids entertainment as they made their own, but this would have been well received. My only quibble was the free white wine was undrinkable - stick to the red!!!!
Back Again!
This was our 2nd visit to Le Viking. Our party grew from 10 to 19 based on our experience last year. Again the location is second to none 1600 metres up where all the ski schools meet. First on the slopes every morning! The rooms are small but you spend little time there. The good news - the food was great ,plenty of wine at meal times, the outdoor pool was open , the weather was great , the views spectacular and the skiing ace. There are lots of blue runs ideal for beginners/children. We used Easy2ride for instruction and they were fantastic catering for all our different ages/abilities.( Thanks Patrice ). This is a hotel that attracts families so expect lots of small children. The downside this year was the lack of children's entertainment at night, last year the kids loved Charley and Mr. Evil. The price of coke at 3 euros is high especially when they pour it out of a 1 litre plastic bottle worth less at the local supermarket! The staff are young and going a little stir crazy having been up there since Dec but work really hard. All in all a fantastic holiday and I guess the benchmark is left to the 2 new families who came with us after hearing all our stories from the previous year. Both said Le Viking far exceeded their expectations.......
Great 3 star hotel - fantastic staff
We were a bit apprehensive having read previous reviews but am delighted to say we were proved wrong. Great location, fantastic views - you can be first on and last off the slopes which is great. Our 22month old loved the creche - they were fantastic with her. The staff could not be faulted - although all very young they could not do enough for us, and everything was done with a smile or a laugh. Food was varied and tasty, entirely in keeping with 3 star status. Lovely afternoon tea, great breakfasts, free fruit juice and wine with dinner. Overall had a fab time, even the pool was heated and clean! The only quibble is that the rooms could have been cleaned better - the beds were made every day and towels changed once that week but while we were there the floor was never vacuumed and the bathroom never cleaned so it all felt a little grubby - but apart from that a superb hol and i'd definitely go back.
January 6th 2008 - Mixed feelings
We had a great week at the Le Viking, mainly due to the great location, as you are able to ski in/out directly outside the hotel. We travelled with a group of 11 adults and 1 child (3 years old). I tried to book a place in the nursery but was unable to get through to Crystal via phone, so requested on line but this was declined as we booked through an agent. On arrival we were told there were no places, so would strongly recommend booking before you travel. We did however get a place in the town and this proved to be very good although there were not many english children within this group. The hotel has great potential but just needs to be managed correctly. The young staff do their best to ensure your stay is good but we had numerous niggly situations...for example...no water in one of the rooms for 2 days, no heating in another, no change of towels...this is apparently done on a wednesday but the washing machine had broken down?!?!, 3 bread rolls for the whole group, as they had run out one evening, 8.30pm dinner sitting for a group with a 3 year old - we changed this, swimming pool was green in colour and not in use due to the snow fall on the previous week and the filter could not cope, this was then drained and re filled but we still could use it because they were waiting for it to heat up..... strange because half the pool is outside .........Having said this, the location is great, there are fantastic views from the dining/brekfast room, the food is good and varied, great sunsets, bar & lounge area. Worth a visit just for the scenery, especially in Avoriaz !!!
Fantoosh Time at the Viking
Date of Travel 12th January 2008 We travelled to this hotel with Crystal Ski, having read previous reviews we were dreading having to stay for a week. How wrong we were, big thanks to Kieran and his team of excellent Crystal Hosts. They are doing an excellent job despite the number of whinging guests (who were picky over nothing). Only downside to the week was the number of wailing children in the restaurant but it's a family hotel so if you're allergic to small children seek alternative accommodation. Rooms are not the biggest but this is a ski holiday and the room is somewhere to sleep, triple room had enough storage and the bathroom was clean and tidy. One towel per person but if you ask they are happy to provide you with extra. A massive thanks to our host Ben from Bournemouth who greeted us with a big smile on the first day, gave fantastic advice on the best runs (was always right), he even recommended our next destination with Crystal and we'll certainly take his advice. If you have a puschair be prepared for a steep hill from the lift to the hotel this is the only access but if there are two of you should be ok. We were a bit nervous of leaving our luggage on the street upon arrival but everything made it up the mountain to the hotel. A definite ski in ski out hotel, we travelled with our teenager and another couple with a small toddler who all agreed the hotel is a winner. Food is as you would expect when catering for large numbers but on the whole tasty. A few blips with service of an evening but nothing that wasn't sorted with an apology. A lot of guests complained about the lack of bread at breakfast but to be honest loads of alternatives to choose from. Would advise an all area ski pass, the skiing in Les Gets is out of this world, Avoriaz has a lot to offer too. This is our third time with Crystal and would certainly use them again but perhaps a chalet rather than a family hotel.
Loved the hotel
We stayed at the hotel just after new year and had a great time. great location, great food, staff are fantastic. id recommend this hotel to anyone.
Great Location, Awful Hotel
No express transfers, dirty rooms, promises made by management to rectify not delivered, little entertainment. Cold pool. Dirty cups and plates which was a pity as the food was good. General cleanliness not acceptable. Partner became ill (stomach) on holiday. Hotel manager considered that a three star does not have to be clean (our room had mould that had to be there for weeks if not months). He said that little investment in an 18 year old hotel was the reason and that it need new windows, doors and hoovers etc. As I had to clean the bedroom myself I explained the hoovers worked fine but the bag does need changing. Doors seemed fine to me but the lift did breakdown two days when we were there. Generally the staff lacked training and direction and any professionalism. Management seemed to do nothing although promised to do everything. Pity as the hotel has got potential but don't believe it will materialise this ski season.
Great Family Hotel
We visited Le VIking for a skiing holiday beginning of April 2007. Snow was still all around - a definite ski in ski out hotel. Rooms were small - there were 2 adults and 2 small kids in our room. Beds were 2 twin beds and kids had to sleep on sofa bed which was fine but had to make it up every night and put away every morning - wanted to point this out. Nice balcony - great view. Hotel sits on its own up the mountain - accessed by the main cable car. We ventured out one night - leaving kids in fabuolous pyjama club - couldn't get back up the hill for hours because of freak thunder and lightning so had put cable car off. It's islation really suited us - but might not suit everyone. Crystal run hotel - kids club were fantastic and it made the holiday for the kids - pick up and drop off at ski school - ski school right outside the door - perfect. We would definitely visit again if we went earlier in the season - snow got slushy in the afternoon due to gorgeous blue skies and sunshine. We had a fabulous holiday though - well done Le Viking.
Great 3 star for kids
Went to Le Viking last year for our first ski holiday with our 3 year twins. We booked kids club for morning and afternoon and lunch times. The snow wasn't great as this was the last week, however Avoriaz was still going strong. The hotel is a great family base with good facilities. Kids club worked well and the children enjoyed it. They took the children all over the village wearing high vis. bibs. The staff were friendly and helpful throughout the week. The food was on the whole good and kids meal choices were British, such as sausages and mash, fish fingers etc. This went down well with our 2. The hotel had early sittings for the children at 5pm and discos at 8pm. The pool was cold but this didn't stop people from enjoying as the outside temp was 25 degrees! The rooms are basic and small for 4 people but on ski holidays you really only need a place to lay your head. On the whole a great family hotel, not luxurious but more than adequate for our needs. We have booked again this year and several friends are bringing their families too!
