Le Viking Hotel Reviews
" Great value for money "
Submitted By: Jus & JulesThe breakfasts are plentiful and there's loads of choice; cereals, fruit, ham, cheese, cooked food, toast and delicious croissants. Because of the easy to get to location we had lunch at the hotel every day and there was a good selection of reasonably priced fast foods - my children loved the cheese burgers, pizzas, paninis and wedges. Dinners were great too - lots of variety, generous portions and delicious. A choice of two starters, three main courses (meat, fish and veggie) and two desserts.
The rooms were basic but warm and clean with comfortable beds. We did struggle with storage as there were only two shelves in the wardrobe and no drawers. However, they were cleaned every day to a reasonable standard and when we asked for additional pillows they were delivered promptly to the room.
The hotel itself was fairly clean and tidy. The staff were very young and the service was not as slick as it would have been with older more mature and experienced staff but, despite their youth, they were friendly, willing and helpful. The hotel rep was fabulous and was extremely helpful when I mislaid my 'phone and needed to book some extra ski lessons.
If you're into skiing this hotel is ideally situated and excellent value for money.

" Please don't waste your money "
Submitted By: gazborangersWe travelled as a party of five, two adults and three young children (one with special needs) and had requested adjoining rooms for obvious reasons. On arrival we were allocated one twin room on the first floor and one triple on the third floor - on pointing out what we thought would be a mistake we were told they could supply baby monitors and the children could sleep on their own on the third floor - it beggared belief. Needless to say I slept with two of our kids and my wife slept with one.
The common areas are grubby, dark and reminded me of an East European hotel in the Communist era. The rooms were disgusting, cheap pine furniture, mould around the window frames, stained carpets, lights didn't work and poor quality bedding. The bathrooms were basic and the shower in our room would only work by me standing on one leg and jamming my toe in the shower mechanism.
The food was just like school dinners and I have never eaten as many casserole based dishes in a week. The staff didn't even know how to make the most basic of drinks like a gin and tonic and quite frankly their whole attitude to the slops we were fed was appalling.
The manager of the hotel was never around and when we complained made her receptionists do the dirty work, I finally tracked her down on the last day but did not receive any apologies.
The lack of customer service really was staggering and this is by far the worst hotel I have ever stayed in. It really is a shame as the potential for this hotel is massive due to its ski in ski out location. Its just a shame Crystal Ski seem determined to take as much money as possible and give as little possible back.
Advice: Morzine is a great ski area but our accomodation was truly awful.

" Wow! "
Submitted By:The staff on the were entirely accommadating and eager and ALWAYS execptionally polite. The waiters/waitresses were very respectful and professional as was the rep: always smiling and recommending pistes out of work hours. Our ski instructor was very, very nice and gave us sweets at the end of the holiday and accommated our skiing schedules into the drop off also (Denis!). The weather was superb and the on-piste cafes were extortionate but nice.
You also get a badge at the end of the week if you have ski school with ESF, a nice touch. The off-piste trails are icy but a real adventure - wow!
Overall, we will be going back a.s.a.p!

Submitted By: ktkFirstly, this hotel is fantastic if you are a skier! It is ideally placed at the top of the Pleney lift with excellent access to the Morzine ski area. Having flown from Exeter we were the first group to arrive, after a reasonable transfer of less than 2 hours. Our luggage is left at the bottom of the lift to be brought to our room later. In fact I collected it from reception, but it was on its way up! Some people arriving on later flights found their rooms not made up and had to wait a considerable time for their luggage.
Our family room consisted of a double bed with a couch and pull out bed for the children. It was fine. However, they had not provided linen or towels for the children, and I had to ask for our towels to be changed midweek. This could be due to the fact that our room did not appear on any list during the week, howver this meant we were able to stay in it until leaving time on check out day!
My biggest gripe is with the organisation in the dining room. As the hotel was full they had allocated two dinner sittings; 7pm and 8.30pm. Ours, the latter, was far too late for our children, and the manager was most unhelpful. So many people complained that they had to rearrange the dinner service to four sittings, which made it more tolerable. The other problem was the wine offered with dinner. The brochure states that 2 glasses of wine would be served per person, but they insisted that you could only have one, and had to buy any more. Even on Christmas night they relented to offer a second glass! Compared to Risoul, this was miserly at best, and downright mean, given that everything was so expensive, and they had a captive audience.
To be fair, we were there for the skiing, so were happy to go to bed early with the children. However, for those who enjoy apres ski, this is not the hotel for you! You can only access the village by going down in the cable car, and the last car back is at 8pm every other night (2am on some nights). This meant that your entertainment was limited to the hotel bars, and the prices were expensive, partly because of the poor exchange rate.
We took advantage of the DVD player on offer, and left £50 instead of E50 as deposit. When we left, our deposit was nowhere to be found! We were offered Euros in exchange, but this was not helpful on the leaving day!
When you arrive, you are given a day pass for the main Pleney lift only. This was great as we were able to get out hire skis and do the runs down to the village. However, on leaving day you could only travel down once, and not back up again, so if you wanted to keep warm you were confined to the hotel. You also had to put your luggage out for collection by 11pm on Friday night, so we were without access to our cases until we collected them at the bottom of the lift on Saturday afternoon. Not very convenient with young children.
Advice: Access the Portes du Soleil via Super Morzine, not Avoriez.

" We stayed at this hotel last year and... "
Submitted By: Mrs R MackayThis hotels approach to Fire Safety was non existant, and can only be deemed as an accident waiting to happen, so much so that my husband who is a Senior Officer in the fire service was so disgusted and appalled by this, that he spent most of our holiday trying to drum into Management and i use the term loosely, the importance of following to the letter, laid down fire procedures.
On 3 seperate occasions during our stay the fire alarms were actuated by staff playing pranks, not funny when its 3-4 O'Clock in the morning and you have 2 young and very frightened children to evacuate.
On every occasion, the hotel staff failed to conduct a Full Evacuation and Role Call, and were actually meeting people on the stairs as the alarms were actuating, and instructing them to go back to bed, before the reasons for the alarms actuating had been ascertained. UNBELIEVABLY INCOMPETENT!!!!
When my husband raised these issues with the Assistant Manger, he used an example of a hotel fire in Brazil, which had resulted in a huge loss of life in almost identical circumstances, and was given the reply "we have followed our procedures and you're not in Britain now, you know"!!!!!!!!
My husband then demanded to see the Hotels Fire Procedures and Alarm panel but was refused. By this time a crowd had gathered and the Assistant Manager was really starting to become uncomfortable, basically due to his inability to deal with the pressure being imposed upon him by my husbands repeated, intense questioning.
Eventually my husband decided to speak to the Hotel Manager who listened to what he had to say, showed him the Hotels Fire Procedures (which were excellent by the way, just not being actioned) and Fire Alarm Panel. My husband then explained to him that it was his responsibility to ensure that his staff ensured that these procedures were carried out to the letter, which the Manager admitted had not been happening.
Following this conversation, we were sat having lunch in the hotels restaurant when we saw staff stacking picnic benches from the decking outside and placing them in front of the fire escape doors!!!!!! Again, back to the Manager my husband went and the tables were removed immediately.
On the morning of our departure my husband noticed that the Smoke Dectector near the open fire in the bar area had been taped up with masking tape!!!!!!! Back to the Manager he went again and the tape was removed. Boy i bet they were glad to see the back of us!!!
Should anyone reading this comment please heed the advice given, and regardless of where you stay, always always evacuate when you hear fire alarms sounding and dont go back to your room until you have confirmed with someone in authority the reason to why Fire Alarms have actuated. This small piece of advice could save your life and that of your families.

Submitted By: Mr D ChristieWell, the hotel is a bit of an 18-30 place - for the staff ! Don't get me wrong, they were mostly all pleasant and chatty but for alot of them, it seemed that the guests were a diversion from their fun.
Aside from the nights where the cable car runs late, you're captive up the mountain, so this isn't one for the apres skiers out there. But if you're in ski school it's a fab location - literally walk out of the door and you're there. The Pleney / Les Gets area is really accessible from the hotel and avoids the 30 minute morning queue at the bottom of the Pleney bubble. However, don't be fooled into thinking Morzine and Avoriaz are linked from up at the Pleney area though. A ski down to the village, short bus and a couple of lifts are required to get up to the Avoriaz slopes (which are much higher than Morzine and Les Gets). It's not out of the question, but is very difficult to do if you're meeting up with morning ski-school folks at 12 or kids in the lunch club at 2pm.
As a family hotel, it's okay - the childcare was quite good with a lot of focus on security (signing in and out) which was reassuring.
Our room was definitely a room, but it could have been cleaner and the towels and dishes stacked up in the corridor all week really should have been cleared away at some point.
The cinema / games room was an absolute disgrace and at the same time a real missed opportunity as the area would be a great bar / games area for families. The food lying on the floor along with the dirty dishes and glasses was asking for trouble with so many kids flying around. I believe the staff use that area but it was a real hazard with 3+ yr old children wandering around between tables stacked with glasses and dirty dishes. Why not take your dishes back to the kitchen or get a trolley to stack them ?? Really, either close it to guests or clear it.
The check-in "procedure" on arrivals day was nothing short of a shambles. It was definitely "every man for himself" and the challenge was to find a member of staff who could tell you what was going on - the guests had a big game of chinese whispers to share info so we could all eventually get checked in - there was no organisation at all - not what you want after a 3am start. The mountain of bags dumped in the reception area as the rooms weren't ready until 4pm didn't really help either.
Out of 10, the food only just gets a 6. Breakfast was fine (difficult to get that wrong) and the afternoon tea (ie. cake) was also okay but the evening meal was very hit or miss - french onion soup which was made up of clear almost tasteless stock with viurtually raw onions was served cold (even after sending back). This wasn't a good start, nor was the lack of available main course from the Saturday night buffet. From there on in, the meals were average at best although the serving staff were pleasant. There were some surprisingly good and some desperately bad dishes on offer - Q. how does a chef create a wholegrain mustard sauce without wholegrain mustard A. just use gravy and if anyone asks, send them some english mustard to go with it ! Hmmmm.
The creche was really well equipped and staffed by friendly and willing staff. The whizz kids club was also good although it's a good idea to hang back and check that your kids get into the right ski-school class as it's a bit of a free for all at ski-school time.
Overall, a pretty basic experience with friendly staff who were mainly willing if a little inexperienced.

Submitted By: Mr S O''HaraWe had the 1st-7th March week and had a wonderful time. The location is superb, the ski school meets outside the place and the staff couldn't have been friendlier or more accommodating. They are all very young but well managed and not without considerable humour.
True, our room wasn't palatial and yes, it could have done with seeing a bit more Pledge in places but it was adequate for a family that is there primarily for skiing.
The food was hearty and plentiful without being particularly haute cuisine and the afternoon tea was absolutely brilliant. The wine was fine especially as it was free all night.
Our group had children in crèche and whizzkids and both were excellent with the activities being varied, indoor and outdoor. The pool was open all week and the rest of the facilities were fine.
Beer and drinks prices were cheaper than in Morzine (€5 a pint) which was very surprising given that you are captive halfway up the mountain. Le Viking was also the cheapest place to have lunch - pizzas/burgers etc on the terrace.
Slight downsides:- ski lockers are very small, difficult to get a snowboard in them with a pair of skis. The normal ski school in March is only 2hrs long (11am to 1:15pm) and finishes after you are meant to picked up your child from crèche (12:45). You can change your lesson to start at 9am but you have to meet in Morzine. More to do with ESF trying to cram in 3 lessons a day than Le Viking planning I think.
In conclusion, if you're a family that needs childcare and you're on a budget (this is after all the cheapest place for the location and facilities in the Crystal brochure), then you will be more than satisfied.
