The best skiing holiday we have ever had.
7 / 10
Feb 2011, Smiffie.

BUT !!!!!.
It was nothing to with the staff or the food.
We got there on the 6th Feb 2011 for a week.
The only reason why it was our best skiing holiday was because of the weather, we never saw a cloud for the whole week we were there, and this is THE ONLY REASON why it was so good.
We are a family of 4 with 2 boys 12 and 15 and we are all good skiers.
From the beginning.
The Crystal reps were crap at almost everything, including the speeches, but what do you expect from a 19yo yoof ?
We were told it was 90 minutes from the airport, it was just over 2 hours, they also told us it was 90 to the airport and again it was just over 2 hours, these people do this trip EVERY week, surely they know / remember how long it takes, this pee'd me off because it was a senseless lie, even it if were 3 hours we had no choice but to sit on the bus, why lie ?
Get off the bus, lug your cases to the lift and in 5 minutes you are up there, the hotel guys get the bags to the hotel 100 yards away.
Booking in was easy, the rooms were small but ok and clean, this is all that matters, flat screen tv on the wall, with 3 UK channels, so that was OK. BBC 1 and 2 and ITV (I think) There was NO tea making equipment in the room and this was a very big negative as there was nowhere to get a hot drink other than in the bar - OUCH.
Because we didn’t arrive until 9 pm we were asked to eat before we booked in so the staff could go home.
the options was pasta, pasta or pasta as the main food with more than enough "other" food to feed the 5000.
Taking in consideration what the other guy said " if you don’t like foreign food then don’t leave the UK " I appreciate that, but I only enjoyed the main dish once throughout the whole week and that was chicken.
The rest of the week was just..... not for me....
If you like salad then you would love the food, the options were too numerous to name, it was only the main meal that I thought sucked, it was eat as much as you like, and the plates were cleared away as soon as you stopped eating, the service was very good.
However, 4 friends went into town one night and had pizza, that cost £100, so stick with the hotel food and suffer in silence as I did.
The first day.
The ski shop was good, he was a bit arrogant for a English man, I think he has been around the French too long.
Main desk staff were ok, not overly helpful but as good as you would hope for.
There is a PC you can use but have to pay for internet connection, I had 30 minutes and I couldn't get on to my own site or one other I use every day. Take a laptop.
Off to ski then, there had been no snow for the last week or so, so it was all manmade and churned up by the snow ploughs, that said I would give them a 10 / 10 for sorting out the snow.
The lifts were just great, even the fast ones were "held back" by the staff so they didn’t knock you off your feet when they hit the back of the leg, again 10 / 10.
There was never a long wait to get on the lifts because there were SO SO many of them, 10 / 10.
The runs were 11 / 10, and the only ice we found was late in the afternoon. They were both long and short, easy and hard, I doubt it matters how good or bad you are there are runs for everyone.
You can ski into Switzerland or stay around the resort.
There are restaurants all over the place, you are never far from a £5 cup of chocolate.
The night life was nonexistent, you can’t get into town because the lift stops at 8pm except for 2 nights when it is open until 2am, we went into town on one night it was closed, I have seen more people waiting outside a taxidermist than I did in the town, but it was good to walk round and look in to the closed shop windows.
The bar in the hotel was just too expensive to sit in and drink at night, I bought 1x G+T, 1x Vodka Orange, 1x Rum coke, and a pint = £25. It is hard to get drunk with those rates.
The food token for lunch will get you a burger and chips, and I defy anyone to eat it all, we had one between us and still left some salad, it IS worth the money. A portion of chips is huge, more than enough for a kid, the profiterole desert was 8 inches round and 6 inches high, far too much for one kid.
As it was sunny every day, everyone ate outside, and it was dry on the deck, we all sat in T shirts and sun glasses, the boot room was dry too so I had no issues with that. The ski lock is too small for sure and it is hard to get 2 sets in if the guy next door got in before you, I managed it every day.
Crystal reps were crap but polite. the pool table at 2 Euros a pop was in a small room that wasn’t big enough to hold the cues without hitting the wall.
TAKE A FEW BOOKS.
IF, it were raining / snowing / cold / windy / foggy I probably would never go there again, as I said it was the weather that made our holiday great.
We do intend to go again, and hope the weather is just as good.
I hope this helps.

Don't Go This Season!

This would have been a fantastic holiday,as it is in great location with good food and nice staff had not both my husband & I had not contracted norovirus whilst staying in this hotel.
I would have written this off as an unfortunate incident, however staff did say that they had had outbreaks of this very nasty D&V bug in the preceeding week's and a number of staff had contracted it.Yet continue to keep this hotel open and pass this bug onto the guests!
There was a small discreetly placed notice placed at reception about the outbreak of this bug that appeared after we had both contracted this bug.
In hospital's when they have this bug wards are shut and no further patients are admitted - why are they continuing to send people here?
If you are booked to go before the end of the season be extremely careful with personal hygiene - they do have hand gel at the entrance to to restuarant - or get them to move you to a different hotel.
Personally we both used the gel (I thought it had been placed there as a swine flu prevention) however this is not a fail safe as we unfortunately know.
If this hadn't of happened my review would have been very different.
It is lacking in some areas as others have reviewed - general room cleaning is minimal if non existant, towels get changed once during the week, loo rolls were sometimes not replaced and there is a bit of argy bargy at tea and cake time as everything runs out in 30 seconds and they are slow to replenish stuff.
However the hotel is comfortable, the staff are excellent and genuinely helpful, the breakfast and evening meals are the best I've ever had on a skiing holiday and the location is stunning.
This could be an absolutely fabulous place to go if they sort attention to detail and there infection control proceedures.
I feel the rating I have given it is based on the fact that I spent an awful lot of money to be sent into a situation that was like playing russian roulette - if we hadn't of contracted this illness and lost two days skiing I would have rated it much higher and I would recommend it.

As a party of 15 (mixture of couples & Families) it was a little dornting on what to expect and hopeing to meet everones expectations. I found the hotel meet all of my family needs, Rooms are a little on the small side but we managed to get by. Food good range but the portions a little small after a heavy day skiing or boarding on the slopes, only 1 dish out of the whole holiday we didnt enjoy.. The Children loved it as it was right next to the slopes, Hotel amenaties were good Wii, table tennis, table football. Very handy having the childrens meals served at 5pm.... The Swimming pool was ok a little chilly but we enjoyed the odd 10 minute swim, followed by a Sauna to warm us up!!!
Only dig I have is the general cleaning duties could have been performed a little better e.g checking toilets / swilling down the sauna changing room floor daily. On the hole a good value for money on what I Paid..

Great Hotel and Staff!!!

We went to this hotel mid january this year (2010) and found it to be a very pleasant suprise, we had booked it a week before traveling, and hadnt read any reviews previously. but after booking we read some of them and were expecting the worst. But on arrival, we couldnt of asked for more. the staff were very friendly and helpful, the hotel was very clean and well kept. the food, although limited to a choice of 3 courses in the evening was great! it was well presented, and tasted very nice. The only down sides for our group (3 blokes in our 30's) were the room sizes. 3 guys with luggage made it a bit tight for space. the picture of the pool in the brochure is decieving as its smaller than it appears in the pics. and the WiFi was down, which was a roblem for one of our group as he needed it for work purpses. We payed a good price for our holiday and think we got great value for money!!! what i will say is if your looking for a party holiday, then this location only has 3 nights a week with late nite lifts into town. but as a ski base with a chilled and relaxing atmosphere, you couldnt ask for much more. Yes the staff are young, but they are good at there jobs, and we all started somewhere. and i think they are a credit to this fun family hotel!!! all in all a great experience!

Terrible standard and service

The hotel is run by Crystal who use undertrained, unprofessional staff who have no idea about how to provide a reasonable level of serivce. Facilities were broken and the hotel wasn't cleaned to a decent/hygenic standard,- dirty towels that needed to be changed were left on the bathroom floor to be just hung back up by housekeeping staff!! The standard of food was appauling and we returned food every night as it was cold and not worthy of eating. Staff were unfriendly and unable to deal with the slightest enquiry. The location of the hotel is outstanding but Crystal riuned our holiday with the way the hotel was managed.

Just returned from Club Le Viking Morzine France which is run by Crystal. I went with my girlfriend and 10 year old daughter and we had an awesome time.
Transfer from airport only 90 mins perfect, Le Viking is up a mountain so you leave your baggage with the reps and they bring it up and you collect it a little later, on the way back you leave your bags with them friday night and they sort out getting them down the mountain, Easy as that no hassle. Ski in ski out excellent and ski schools meet approx 50 metres away. Breakfast spot on eat as much as you can then you dont need to buy your lunch. Evening meals only slight issue, food was excellent but because the kitchen is small children meals served at 5.30pm adults eat at 7.30pm onwards, however my daugter ate the adults meals with us at 7.30pm and she was more than happy. You pre-order your evening meal at breakfast so you have plenty of time to make a choice.
The staff at the hotel were young, very polite and nothing was too much trouble.
We borrowed a DVD player (Ltd supplies) no charge just a 30euro deposit,
We borrowed an extension lead no charge(Ltd sullpies)
Ski lockers were fine you can borrow a padlock 5euro deposit or use your own. Boot storage in the ski lockers however the boot warmers did not work very well.
Swimming pool was lovely and warm stayed in for a couple of hours.Plenty of activities offered by Crystal you have to have a go at the bum boarding. Ski hosting is also offered for free , this is a good way to find your way around
Rooms lovely and warm beds really comfortable. Would have liked a few more hangers and hooks but that is it.Showers were great loads of hot water when ever i had a shower. The location is perfect at the foot of the Pleney ski area, overlooking Morzine with Avoriaz in the distance. The local area pass is fine but we had the area pass and skied into switzerland. Pistes are well groomed and loads of snow cannons if they are needed.
Club le viking is in a perfect location with good facilities, however if you are the sort of person who is not happy unless you are moaning do not go any where on holiday, because you will always find fault and yes you know who you are. We had a great week and will definately go back.

Great location, ski direct from the door. Crystal holidays are great value; the food was great with varied menu. Young staff all made an effort to make our holiday enjoyable. The soap and towels are provided (don't believe some of the reports, the sinks have integrated plugs). The holiday was a great success and the skiing area was extensive, I suggest you visit La Grand Ourse restaurant at Mont Chéry. The lamb shoulder was fantastic, and the service was excellent. Please be aware that main bubble lift up to hotel closes 17:00, but there is an alternative cable car which runs the same route, every half hour. Access to Avoriaz was easy with free, short skibus journey and then cable car up to the plateau. Morzine has a lot to offer!

  • Advice: Easy access from Geneva, the village centre has lots of cafes /bars, great links by ski bus.
  • Activities: La Grand Ourse, Le Tyrolean (Pizza restaurant) route de la Plagne.

We've just had a fantastic week at Le Viking. The location, at the top of the Pleney lift, is just perfect for a ski holiday. Walk out the door of the hotel, hop onto your skis and you're away. It's also only metres away from the ski school meeting points so if you're having lessons it's ideal too.
The breakfasts are plentiful and there's loads of choice; cereals, fruit, ham, cheese, cooked food, toast and delicious croissants. Because of the easy to get to location we had lunch at the hotel every day and there was a good selection of reasonably priced fast foods - my children loved the cheese burgers, pizzas, paninis and wedges. Dinners were great too - lots of variety, generous portions and delicious. A choice of two starters, three main courses (meat, fish and veggie) and two desserts.
The rooms were basic but warm and clean with comfortable beds. We did struggle with storage as there were only two shelves in the wardrobe and no drawers. However, they were cleaned every day to a reasonable standard and when we asked for additional pillows they were delivered promptly to the room.
The hotel itself was fairly clean and tidy. The staff were very young and the service was not as slick as it would have been with older more mature and experienced staff but, despite their youth, they were friendly, willing and helpful. The hotel rep was fabulous and was extremely helpful when I mislaid my 'phone and needed to book some extra ski lessons.
If you're into skiing this hotel is ideally situated and excellent value for money.

just returned from a weeks stay at the viking with 3 friends. this hotel has a great location so you dont have the long wait at the bottom lift in the morning.the rooms are basic and what you would expect in a 2 star apartment but the beds are nice and comfortable. the staff at this hotel are pretty young but they are all very nice and do try hard even though they dont get paid a lot.i always find if you have a laugh with them and dont complain in a nasty way you get the best out of them. the hotel is also totally english so dont expect any french culture or food . the food was ok and canteen style not posh nosh, the vegie option was a better choice on some nights and if you are nice to your host then they will often give you a bit more wine than the normal 1 glass.the bottom line for this place is if you get a late deal and dont pay the full price then you wont be dissapointed. oh and beer in the hotel and resort has dropped to 3 euro a pint bargain.

Le Viking is run by Crystal Ski holidays and is staffed by people more interested in their two hours skiing per day than customer service.
We travelled as a party of five, two adults and three young children (one with special needs) and had requested adjoining rooms for obvious reasons. On arrival we were allocated one twin room on the first floor and one triple on the third floor - on pointing out what we thought would be a mistake we were told they could supply baby monitors and the children could sleep on their own on the third floor - it beggared belief. Needless to say I slept with two of our kids and my wife slept with one.
The common areas are grubby, dark and reminded me of an East European hotel in the Communist era. The rooms were disgusting, cheap pine furniture, mould around the window frames, stained carpets, lights didn't work and poor quality bedding. The bathrooms were basic and the shower in our room would only work by me standing on one leg and jamming my toe in the shower mechanism.
The food was just like school dinners and I have never eaten as many casserole based dishes in a week. The staff didn't even know how to make the most basic of drinks like a gin and tonic and quite frankly their whole attitude to the slops we were fed was appalling.
The manager of the hotel was never around and when we complained made her receptionists do the dirty work, I finally tracked her down on the last day but did not receive any apologies.
The lack of customer service really was staggering and this is by far the worst hotel I have ever stayed in. It really is a shame as the potential for this hotel is massive due to its ski in ski out location. Its just a shame Crystal Ski seem determined to take as much money as possible and give as little possible back.

Le Viking is situated in an ideal location, with many pistes for all levels of skill and ages. The hotel; had a pool which was adequate for being primarily a ski resort, the rooms were cosy, but could have had more frequent towel changes. It was clear the staff never moved or touched your belongings and the views where-ever your balcony was were spectactular (you could see the shinning lights of avoriaz at night). The cake was very nice to come back too (especially the chocolate with the gooey centre) and the free drinks never failed to surprise. The food in general was quite exellent and had a wide array of choice - oh the cravates!
The staff on the were entirely accommadating and eager and ALWAYS execptionally polite. The waiters/waitresses were very respectful and professional as was the rep: always smiling and recommending pistes out of work hours. Our ski instructor was very, very nice and gave us sweets at the end of the holiday and accommated our skiing schedules into the drop off also (Denis!). The weather was superb and the on-piste cafes were extortionate but nice.
You also get a badge at the end of the week if you have ski school with ESF, a nice touch. The off-piste trails are icy but a real adventure - wow!
Overall, we will be going back a.s.a.p!

We stayed at Le Viking for the first week it was open in the 08 season. I had booked with Crystal because we stayed at their Club Hotel in Risoul last year and found the experience very satisfying. I was worried about the reviews of Le Viking on this site, but went with an open mind.
Firstly, this hotel is fantastic if you are a skier! It is ideally placed at the top of the Pleney lift with excellent access to the Morzine ski area. Having flown from Exeter we were the first group to arrive, after a reasonable transfer of less than 2 hours. Our luggage is left at the bottom of the lift to be brought to our room later. In fact I collected it from reception, but it was on its way up! Some people arriving on later flights found their rooms not made up and had to wait a considerable time for their luggage.
Our family room consisted of a double bed with a couch and pull out bed for the children. It was fine. However, they had not provided linen or towels for the children, and I had to ask for our towels to be changed midweek. This could be due to the fact that our room did not appear on any list during the week, howver this meant we were able to stay in it until leaving time on check out day!
My biggest gripe is with the organisation in the dining room. As the hotel was full they had allocated two dinner sittings; 7pm and 8.30pm. Ours, the latter, was far too late for our children, and the manager was most unhelpful. So many people complained that they had to rearrange the dinner service to four sittings, which made it more tolerable. The other problem was the wine offered with dinner. The brochure states that 2 glasses of wine would be served per person, but they insisted that you could only have one, and had to buy any more. Even on Christmas night they relented to offer a second glass! Compared to Risoul, this was miserly at best, and downright mean, given that everything was so expensive, and they had a captive audience.
To be fair, we were there for the skiing, so were happy to go to bed early with the children. However, for those who enjoy apres ski, this is not the hotel for you! You can only access the village by going down in the cable car, and the last car back is at 8pm every other night (2am on some nights). This meant that your entertainment was limited to the hotel bars, and the prices were expensive, partly because of the poor exchange rate.
We took advantage of the DVD player on offer, and left £50 instead of E50 as deposit. When we left, our deposit was nowhere to be found! We were offered Euros in exchange, but this was not helpful on the leaving day!
When you arrive, you are given a day pass for the main Pleney lift only. This was great as we were able to get out hire skis and do the runs down to the village. However, on leaving day you could only travel down once, and not back up again, so if you wanted to keep warm you were confined to the hotel. You also had to put your luggage out for collection by 11pm on Friday night, so we were without access to our cases until we collected them at the bottom of the lift on Saturday afternoon. Not very convenient with young children.
