We have recently returned from a wonderful holiday in Zakinthos (June 2007) our accommodation at Olga’s Studios made the holiday. This is a superb base for this part of the island.
Our room was spacious and spotlessly clean, high ceilings and louvered windows keep it airy, and pure cotton sheets; sheer bliss. The balconies are very generous well sheltered; you have sunshine for breakfast and sunshine with your “sundowner”, but a very nice cool room to come home to after a hot day.
Olga is an absolute sweetheart, not too much English but it’s amazing, with a few words of Greek and a few of English and lots of miming, how easy it is to communicate. Her son Lazoros manages the bookings in English.
The setting of the Studios is on a quiet side street but not far from the main road and good facilities. The grounds are stone crazy paving in those lovely golden colours with lots of flowerbeds all kept immaculately. It was part of an olive grove and many of the trees have been kept, providing cool shade.
Vasilikos is, without doubt, the prettiest part of the island. The village is a quiet resort (if that’s not a contradiction in terms!), with an adequate range of shops and tavernas. What night life there is tends to be local live music without a disco in sight. Tourists are a broad European mix, unlike the all-British resorts elsewhere on the island.
The beach is a very pleasant short stroll through olive groves is lovely and clean and backed by small dunes covered in bright blue echinops. The sea is clear and warm because of the shallow water and uncrowded. There are two tavernas behind the beach, both very nice (we preferred the smaller one – absolutely fresh food).
As usual in Greece it’s difficult to get a bad meal and there are good restaurants in the village, but the best by far is the nearest to Olga’s, called “Simply Greek”. Definitely a cut above, with the most delightful young host / chef and his Dutch wife.
