Very very disappointing
from essjaygee
Stayed here for three days for a course. Awful, basically. I'm trying to eat healthily - not so much as an apple or slice of cucumber in sight. At one buffet lunch we had the choice of pureed carrot, couscous, chips, rice as side orders. Puddings were not worth talking about. The only fruit came as decoration for the desserts and in the packed lunch we requested on the final day, which was actually the best meal we had from the hotel. A friend of mine needed to have soya milk as he is allergic to dairy - the staff acted like this was a totally unreasonable request to make and brought a carton (yes, a carton, not even decanted into a jug) out to him each day under sufferance. As far as the course went - the coffee was brought at incorrect times, so it was cold when the coffee break time actually arrived. The hotel were incapable of putting calls through between guest bedrooms, despite having been asked in advance if this was possible. They eventually blamed our own equipment and a burly, stroppy "engineer" was sent. Needless to say this part of the course has been done in hotels all over the country and no problem like this has been encountered anywhere else. At least one of my colleagues was given somebody else's room on arrival. Rooms are basic, shabby and not clean enough. There was a hair on my shower wall for the whole 3 days I was staying there. The complementary cupasoup summed it up. What the hotel sells itself on, though, is a charming view of the Devon countryside, with M5 in the background. Interestingly enough, when our concerns were raised back at the ranch, word came back from the Gipsy Hill Hotel that we were overdemanding.....
Avoid this horrendous place - its a disgrace
from Earl_of_Doncaster
Stayed here for one night at a quite unbelievable cost of £90.00! This is simply one of the most awful hotels I have ever had the misfortune of staying in. It is in appaling, run-down condition, the rooms look as though they were last decorated (and cleaned) in 1981. The hallway was strewn with broken furniture. Avoid this hotel, unless you have just escaped from a Rumanian lunatic asylum, after 20 years, in which case you will feel at home.

Oh Dear what a awful review. Just to put the picture straight. The reception area has been decorated in the lest 12 months. I can only think that the broken furniture referred was an antique cabinet. Two of the paynes broke when during a gale when the wind caught the door and blew it into the desk and broke the payne and door. It was fixed within a few days.
Apart form this there has been no broken funiture in the hall.reception area that I can ever remember. It does have 3 other items of quite valuable antique furniture
Dont Have Your Wedding Here .
from Grip1
I had my daughters wedding at this place and we thought it was shocking service. 80 people at the dinner with not a jug of water on the tables. Red and white wine was ordered and we all sat through the meal without a drink, then it all came at once. They ran out of potatoes, so some of us were still eating when the speaches were going on. The wedding cake was not cut, as promised until guests were starting to leave, then the big rush to get things done, leaving the two Mothers to distribute it to the guest themselves. At a cost of twenty pounds a plate I thought this place was shocking, and I`ll never recomend this Best Western to anybody.
Don't have your xmas party there!!!!!
from A TripAdvisor Member
We had a xmas party at the hotel! I warn you now cancel it!!! The food that we did have was terrable, it looked like it had been chucked around the kitchen floor a few times, tasted bad and was cold.To top it off we had about a 30 min wait between 3 main meals coming out before the rest that came out bit by bit. We payed £26 a head and it wasn't even worth £10. (we didin't even have what the menu said). Most of the staff were very good but management were terriable, we were told to get out if we wanted a full refund!!!!! or we could have 50% refund if we wanted to stay! As it was a xams party and there was about 60 of us we stayed. I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone. I feel sorry for the staff who had to put on a brave face.
Awful!!

Right next door to a gypsy site, run down, save yourself the bother and go to the hiexpress which is probably cheaper as well.

There is certainly not a gypsy site next door. There is one caravan on the farm land adjoining the Hotel's car park which is habited by the owner of the adjoining farm land.
Most of our rooms have been refurbished and our prices are very competitive.
Only missing the cast of Fawlty Towers
from Bellch
I can not think of one positive thing to say about this hotel. I stayed overnight recently and found the whole experience very trying. This hotel reminded me of Fawlty Towers; the interior of the building and the rooms are a near perfect match. No Basil or Sybil however. I will do my best never to have to return to this hotel.
Great location
from A TripAdvisor Member
I have just spent the weekend at the Gipsy Hill Hotel and have to say what a great time I had.The location was ideal being close to the motorway and I was able to enjoy the beautiful views of the surrounding countryside. I stayed in a large bedroom which had obviously just been refurbished. It was very clean and comfortable. The staff were most helpful and the food was good. I will certainly stay there next time I visit Exeter and would not hesitate in recommending the hotel to my friends.
Used to be so good

I have visited the Gipsy hill many times on business in the past. I hardly believed the poor review it had receivec until I visited recently. The hotel has unfortunatly changed hands and I was under the impression that the new owner was unsure what to do with the hotle. I am sorry to say that the previously high standards had slipped and the staff appear to have had their hands tied in what they are able to do in order to help geusts. It is such a shame as i have always previously enjoyed staying here with its friendly atmosphere, however this seems to have totaly changed with the general atmosphere being tense. All i can do is hope that standards rise to what they previously were and the changes the new owner is proposing improve things or I for one shall not be returning.
Needs work

I can not understand how this hotel obtained its' three star rating, my room was in desperate need of decoration and a good clean, as was most of the hotel. The food was adequate although somewhat over priced and the blackboard displaying the lunchtime specials seriously lowered the tone. The hotel has absoloutly fabulous views over the Devon country side and brilliant acess to the airport, M5 and Exeter. This is a place with great potential. The staff were friendly and efficent and more than made up for the other short comings of this hotel. We did however encounter one member of staff who learning to smile would do no harm. However we had little contact with her except to watch her eat during the evenings. Overall we enjoyed our stay mainly due to the friendly staff and the fact that Exeter is a beautiful city. The hotel itself I would recommend for those looking for somewhere to sleep at the end of a hetic day. I would geuss that the majority of customers here are business clients as this hotel is designed to service their needs. Definatly not somewhere to stay with children as there are no facilities and they will be bored within minutes.
Loved it. Peaceful surroundings, large old house, terrific food & really friendly staff. Room was comfortable, not luxurious but large. Plenty of parking & a real adventure to find it. Will definitely stay again.
