Please understand that this hotel has...
1 / 10
Aug 2007, Mr P S Cater

Please understand that this hotel has 320 steps from road to top level, with no lift. There are 30 steps from the road to reception, +18 steps to the pool/restaurant, a further approx. 38+ steps to 1st floor rooms, a further 39+ to next rooms, 44+ to top pool. Then 2 further levels making 320 steps in total.
We stayed at this hotel 3 - 10 June 2007.
Firstly, this hotel is approximately 2 stars UK, perhaps 3. Just days before we arrived the hotel changed ownership and most (80-90%) of the staff changed. It showed; pool umbrellas and chairs arrived during our stay; air con service contracts with maintainers seemed not to exist, no spare room refrigerators, etc.
Rooms - variable, basic, poor maintenance, many with non-working air con units, fridge, TV etc.
Friendly staff willing to please but level of spoken English very low; basic understanding, even at reception, patchy but essentially low. The hotel management team are good, friendly and speak better English but this cannot cover up the hotel's present major shortcomings.
The food - repetitive, cafeteria-type. If you want to eat good local bread and simple produce you will be very pleased but the hot dishes were not what most people would expect on holiday. Chips, rice, skin-on mass-catering chicken drumsticks in sauce, somewhat gristly meat etc - you get the picture.
All-inclusive? Possibly. No ice cream, not much choice, I was very concerned about hygiene (salads & cold dishes displayed at ambient temperature throughout service) perhaps this is why I was ill for 3 days, 24 hours after we arrived. My wife had the same diarrhoea & vomiting infection for 24 hours and until then we had not eaten or drunk a thing outside the hotel.
The pool-bar faces the rooms. The barman & DJ seem to run these for theirs & their friends' benefit. All day and night long - loud boom-boom disco music.
I asked the management many times for a change of music. It wasn't just me - most people felt the same but no one else was willing to complain. I asked for any music, Turkish, English, modern, 'radio 2' - whatever - but not ear-crushingly loud disco track boom-boom all day (from 10am) until 1am. The DJ quietened it down until the manager went home at 10pm then got his revenge with deafeningly loud disco beat until 1am.
One night I got dressed at 12.30am and went down to ask for the volume to be reduced. They turned it off! I think it was because I was 'the man who continually complained about it.'
So - by all means holiday at the regent resort but do so knowing the position:-
*up to 320 steps & no lift, no handrails
*pool unmarked with depth indicators
*food not much better than basic cafeteria
*rooms not in good condition, many without facilities
*patchy communications with some staff, but they are very friendly and most try hard
*very loud music day and night
You can see that all of the above, except the steps, can be fixed if the intention and effort is there. My advice would be to ensure they are, before you enjoy a holiday in this lovely location.
Comments from holiday guests since our stay suggest that the infrastructure has not improved - food still poor, erratic room a/c, appalling entertainments team etc., so they seem to care more about income than guest satisfaction.

I have just returned from a week’s...
8 / 10
Aug 2007, Mrs P Long

I have just returned from a week’s holiday and had an excellent time. I travelled alone (age 55) but I had read previous reports and expected the worse.
I had a very nice twin room with small balcony, mini bar/fridge in room, air conditioning which did not work for one day but when reported to reception it was fixed same day, hot water did not work for a day but again restored next day. There are lots of steps and would be unsuitable for elderly people or small children but views are worth it when you get there.
Staff are very pleasant although some don’t understand English and most of the guests were Turkish but hey better than lager louts and didn’t see anybody drunk or unsociable. Food was not to my taste but if I had gone for the food I would have gone to France but ladies, its ideal for those who want to diet, there was always something which you could fill up with, soup and bread and plenty of salads, some night’s chips and variety of Turkish foods if you are adventurous. If you want English food it is not the place to stay but during trips to Bodrum or local bars there are snacks to fill up on.
Entertainment is poor and boring again more for Turkish humour than ours, one evening a group of 6 "entertainers" walked around the stage with bottles of water which they drank then proceeded to spit out over each other, not amusing! So don’t expect too much, pack some cards or board games and just line up the drinks, get other English families together and make your own entertainment, we did and had good fun having our own sing along and just getting to know each other, lots of friendships made.
There is a football pitch and tennis plus the two pools are fine, not olympic size but one has slides and people using them seem to have lots of fun. Health and safety would not be very pleased with some areas of this hotel but there is always something to complain about even looking around our own home, I guess there are some things people would find fault with. I would not give this a 5 star rating, probably 3 but I think the hotel are aware of the bad reports which have been given and are trying to make amends.
I would not say this is a family hotel because of the steps and the football and tennis facilities are at the top of the complex and not as secure as I would have liked for my son. The Turkish bath was 10 pounds but was worth every penny and the massage was also 10 pounds again worth having. Bus service is very good and outside the hotel, costs just 1.75 lire per journey and bus takes you directly into bus station at Bodrum where there is an indoor market on Tuesdays - take English money as they like our cash so you don’t have bother exchanging it (the banter in the markets are brilliant -'cheaper than Asda, Primark, shoplifting'). The exchange rate for Turkish lire out there was 2.70 so change your cash out there rather than here if you want to change any because I only got 2.38 at Gatwick when I changed some, I was arriving at 4am so wanted some pocket money.
If you use the bar at the end of the beach parade where there is music/and a singer be warned that they charge you 5 lire each for the music on top of your drinks which are already highly priced - cant remember name of bar but its at the very end of the parade where the yachts are parked. Don’t let other people’s experiences and views spoil your holiday before you get there, you may get the perfect room etc and enjoy yourself.
I went expecting the worse and just hoped for a clean room and decent weather, I got both - 42 degrees weather too hot but better than the rain we had been having and lovely room cleaned daily with fresh towels and sheets changed during my weeks stay.
Turkey is a lovely country so just enjoy yourself, holidays pass too quickly to spend all the time looking for faults and you will soon be back in the luxury of your own home eating good old English food so think positive!!! I did and now I am home I already miss the wonderful views, sounds and hospitality of the Turkish people and cant wait to go back again.

Not suitable for those with walking...

Jun 2007, Mrs E Bryson

Not suitable for those with walking difficulties/disabled, or young children.
Stayed at the Regal Resort hotel 3rd June for 2 wks with husband, two 15yr olds, and 2 62 yr olds.
Avoid at all costs, this hotel looks very impressive on the internet but is a far cry from the so called 5* accommodation advertised.
Over the 2 wks of our holiday I have 40 odd complaints! Too many to mention.
There is no mention of the nearly 400 steps and all the facilities advertised were not available such as; gym, 2 snack bars, tennis courts, football pitch, games room, Childs play area, poolside toilets, mini bar, entertainment repetitive same music every night for kids (superman, agadoo, music man, birdie dance), no sandy beach, safes are not secured.
Poorly lit stairs and walkways. The rooms are in very poor condition with a smelly empty fridge as the "mini bar.” Air con that doesn't work in rooms or bar lounge, no hot water for a week.
The pool is not Olympic size, sunloungers with no cushions. Turkish bath isn't free.
Constantly running out of drinks, staff using hands to put ice in drinks. Food very repetitive and not at all fresh looking. Struggled to eat after 4 days. Table cloths not changed regularly.
The rep showed no interest in our complaints and was rather rude and ignorant. I would say that over 90% of holiday makers at this hotel had complaints some more than others.
