Great location, pathetic effort at vegetarian meal
4 / 10
Apr 2011, LOVESKIING

This is the second year in a row that we stayed in the Terra Nova, purely because it was one of the cheapest deals we could find that provides ski in/ski out accommodation. The hotel itself is fine (warm, reasonably clean and plenty of hot water) however the vegetarian options at dinner time were truly pathetic. The standard meal that I was offered as a vegetarian comprised a pile of overcooked frozen veg in place of the meat option, served in a variety of forms, on each night. When I finally asked if there were any other options, I was met with a very rude response from one of the waitresses. Needless to say, I quickly lost my appetite.
What annoyed me so much was the fact we complained last year to our Crystal rep but it just goes to show that those questionnaires do not result in anything being changed! We won't be going back.

Warning: money was stolen from our and at least few other room safes

In general the hotel is OK mainly due to its excellent location on the slope ( ski in/out). Room is big enough and clean. Food was also fine. Not like in Club Med but I have no complain. What really spoiled our vacation was ~200 Euro that were stolen from our room safe (while we were out skiing). The hotel staff attitude to our complain was outrageous.
On the 2nd day of our stay at the hotel we could not open the safe when we came back after skiing. In the morning the safe was opening fine. So we thought that we did something wrong and called the reception. At about 5 pm the safe technician visited us and opened the safe. He had a long list of rooms where safes could not be open. On the 3rd day of our stay after skiing we again could not open the safe. And again at about 5 pm safe technician opened our safe. This was strange and we checked the safe content. Approximately 200 Euro ( out of 600 euro total) were missing. On the 4th day before going out we closed the safe (took our remaining money with us) with some signs to see whether somebody opened the safe while we were skiing. When we came back we noticed immediately that somebody opened the safe and again we could not open the safe with our code (technician opened it once again with his master code).
We told about it to members of our group and found out that almost all of them had problems with opening the safe. After they checked the safe many of them discovered that 200-300 Euro were stolen from each room. We complained to the hotel manager but she did not seem to care as if it wasn’t her hotel and her responsibility. She just told us to go to the police. We did go to the police and filled a declaration. In my opinion the hotel management reaction to our complain is at least strange. Every evening their safe technician is helping to open a lot of guest safes and the hotel management thinks that it’s OK : hotel guests just don’t know how to open and close a simple safe. Conclusions in my opinion are obvious.

We booked into Terra Nova at beginning of March 09 for a week. This is a proper ski in/out hotel with the back door literally on the piste. The room was a good size with a balcony and very clean also the bathroom was the same standard. Breakfast was a buffet with a great deal of choice. Dinner was 3 nights buffet and 4 nights waiter served, we preferred waiter served as the food was far tastier than buffet, there was so much food on offer at mealtimes that you could never complain of being hungry. Check out the English waiter who looks like Windy Miller, he was a great help. The only letdowns were, upon arrival we had to wait over 2 hours for our room to be cleaned, reception ran out of ping pong balls for most of the week, being avid table tennis players this was a pain. Lastly don't be fooled into hiring skies off the hotel, it costs 150 euros pp for sticks skies and boots, we walked into the village and hired from ski republic and got 2 sets of equipment for 129 euros. This is a hotel I would definately book into again and after 13 ski holidays it is up there with the best.

Great hotel & excellent location. Bit...

Great hotel & excellent location. Bit unsure at first as very out numbered by french guests as was French half term but everyone was very friendly. The staff were trained above your normal chalet/hotel level & everywhere was clean & service always good. The restaurant offered plentiful buffet food but would agree with previous review that maincourse menu was a bit unusual! we never went hungry though! bar was atmospheric with an hours entertainment laid on every night & the French really showed us shy Brits how to enjoy themselves. Rooms were very large, bathrooms modern & towels refreshed daily if required. Loved La Plagne & the ski area felt so accessible from this hotel, the locker room opens onto the piste & there is no hassle. We are eager to return to area & have trawled the web but can't really find anywhere to match this accom's standards - is that recommendation enough! & if you get a chance to try the luge - go for it.

Newly renovated hotel; ski in, ski...

Newly renovated hotel; ski in, ski out. Within easy reach of La Plagne Centre, bars etc. but never felt inclined much to venture out as has lively bar. Restaurant has great views over the bottom of the slopes. Food was mainly Savoie which meant a few more unusual dishes at dinner times, but always plentiful, hot & several choices - kids were well catered for. Free wine with dinner courtesy of Crystal Ski - very welcome & again plentiful!
Clean, warm & good room service, were really impressed. This hotel & resort well exceeded my expectations. In Feb 07 (OK, not UK half term) but the lift queues were nonexistent, and lift system efficient and mostly modern.
Will definitely return for the variety of skiing terrain to suit our abilities - beginner, blue cruiser & intermediate red rider. Ski school friendly & helpful & my 12 yr old couldn’t get enough. You never need ski the same slopes twice.
Think we had a bargain last year, as I see Terra Nova prices have much increased in ‘08!
