Oct 2007, Mr A Williams

I went with my wife and my 2 daughters which were 9 and 3 years old.
Staff in the hotel very good and helpful the members of the Thomson team were also very good, my 2 children loved the kids clubs and the hour between 8 - 9 for the party dances.
Food was also very good and restaurant and kitchen staff excellent would not be out of place in a 5 star hotel.
The pool was very good for the children with a large shallow end for the young children and the other side was the deep end for all the older children to dive and play about in the children’s parks were also very nice. Plenty of room around the pool no probs for sunbeds but we did go out of season.
Port Aventura is fantastic a must for every child even very big children they go from the most hair raising to the gentle and relaxing. That’s all the good points over now the bad points.
The room we had was a duplex room on the top floor the room was VERY BASIC, the furniture was uncomfortable to the point where you could not sit on the sofa because it was too uncomfortable after 5 minutes. The room needed a total refurb there were holes blocked up in the walls and the furniture looked very shabby.
The large hall was like going back to Butlins or Pontins in the early 80's even though it was clean it need to be updated. Lime green was the colour of the room.
The cleaners came in every day with a broom towels and mops, they changed the towels when needed left sheets for us to change our own bed under the sofa, did not use the mop and broom once in 2 weeks DO NOT LOOK UNDER THE BED that have not been cleaned since Adam was a boy, it was stinking.
Location of hotel was ok. Reading an earlier review the person said about the bald head and tattoo brigade yes they were there puffing themselves up trying to look the bad boys of the hotel.
Overall the hotel was ok due to the staff and food otherwise I would have wanted to be moved. I am disappointed with Thomsons as the try to say they are the best and the hotel rooms were so bad.
Kids had a fantastic time in the hotel and if you don’t mind very basic rooms this hotel would be ok for you also. If you decide to book this hotel there is one word of advice DON’T LOOK UNDER THE BED.

Holiday was amazing. Food was great, staff were great, especially Sam and David!
There’s always something going on through the day and you always feel welcome.
The best activity is the visitors vs. reps' but the reps cheat!
The bingo is fun and so cheap too at 8 o’clock and the crèche and kids club is great.
Bar staff were amazing and the reception were great, they even gave us 4 free tickets to port Ventura. Would go back only knowing that the same staff were there.
20/10 EXCELLENT HOLIDAY.

Sep 2007, Mrs A McKechnie

My husband and I stayed at the Golden Avanida with our three children, aged 15, 11, 9, we shared a 1 bedroom apartment which was ample for us. I would suggest that the maid service extended to cleaning under beds as there was a lot of dust which took minutes to clean! Towels were changed on a daily basis and bed linen at regular intervals.
The entertainment was ok but did not really stretch to include teenagers, luckily my boys were happy in the pool or on the football park. Overall a great base for a holiday in Salou as you are not in the town centre but within easy reach of shops, bars etc. on average a 5-10 min walk.
We spent three days at Port Ventura which the boys thought was great. The attitude of staff within the park was not great as on three separate occasions my eldest son stood in long queues for refreshments but was totally disregarded when he got to the front in favour of Spanish speaking customers. I feel the staff could do with a lesson in public relations! We bought our tickets before going which saved us standing in the long queues to gain entry to the park.
Overall at great holiday for kids and would recommend the Golden Avenida to parties with young children -5-10 yrs.

Sep 2007, Mrs T Jackson

The hotel itself was nice and clean. Entertainment was great except for bingo that goes on for an hour - boring! Staff - cannot fault, really helpful.
The only problem with this hotel is lack of sunbeds; if you don’t get there early you won’t get one. Its a shame as lovely pool, please sort this out Thomson as it ruins the holiday. The beach is too packed to go there. Port Aventure is excellent. Barcelona well worth a visit too.
Will go back to this hotel if they sort out the sunbed situation. Overall had a great time.

On first impression this hotel looks...

Sep 2007, Mr C Porter

On first impression this hotel looks a bit scruffy from the outside and in need of a painting.
What a surprise inside when we were welcomed at reception by Dana (a rather beautiful Spanish receptionist) She spoke English very well & was most helpful as were the other receptionists (a male & Sarah the English receptionist).
The room was pleasant and clean, the maids were good but only for towel changes bathroom cleaning and bed changes. There was dust balls under the bed after the first week and I had to clean them myself or they would have been there when we left.
The restaurant was good, clean & very pleasant, we were welcomed by Ana, the service was very good by the table waiting staff (although they had a habit of asking you what you wanted to drink as soon as someone sat at the table during the evening meal) We found that a young man called Hasan was the best waiter and let us at least look at the drinks menu before taking our order, also nothing was too much trouble.
The Thomson kids club/zone reps were good and kept my 9 year old daughter entertained, although Sam stands out most as she jumps around like a nutter and is always up for a laugh.
The Golden Entertainer "David" was excellent and made everyone feel involved with whatever activities they decided to take part in.
The bar staff were good apart from 1 or 2 exceptions, our favourite barmen being Diago, David & Jesus.
We mostly ate in the restaurant but if you decide to have something different try "the boat" restaurant around the corner (out of reception and turn immediately left) it’s an English owned restaurant and offers good food at a good price.
Just along the road from there is the Italian restaurant & further down the main road (on the way to the beach) is the "orient express" this isn’t a Chinese restaurant as suggested by the name but a Spanish restaurant and the meals were excellent.
Salou was a bit grotty and so was the beach but no worse than you see in the UK.
I suggest when you book asking for the pool side high up as the outside bar area can be noisy about 12-2 am.
The noise from the night club up the road was negligible.
We will be returning next year for the family holiday.

Party of 2 adults and 3 children...
9 / 10
Sep 2007, Mrs R Barnes

Party of 2 adults and 3 children (12/9/5) had a great holiday kids clubs fantastic and a great break from the kids if you can drag them away from the pool that is. We went self catering but soon upgraded to half board. And so glad we did the food was fantastic and such a huge range to choose from.
It cost us 340 euros for the 5 of us for 6 days and was worth every penny.
As the food outside the hotel was awful. We ordered a chicken salad from a cafe around the corner near golden Port Salou Park hotel and it was more of a carcus salad full of bones and scraps of chicken. Which we just paid for and left.
This cafe was obviously more for the Spanish people. That is what made our mind up to go half board. The waitresses in the restaurant were great and they never seemed to go home very happy and good with the kids.
I must point out that you get drinks with your meal in the morning but not at tea and there is a microwave if you like your food hotter.
There were theme nights which were great. Most of the bar staff were pleasant apart from 2 one dark coloured man who had a bad attitude problem and another who slammed your drinks down and always expected a tip.
Reception staff brilliant and 2 English speaking ones very helpful. The only problem we found was the rooms you can hear everything going on in the hotel and around and if you don’t smoke turn the air con off when you don’t need it as somehow the smell of ciggies comes through from other rooms.
All in all had a fabulous time and for £371 for the 5 of us for 1 week booking hotel only through Thomson was a bargain.
Have a good time!

Just arrived back from the Avenida....

Sep 2007, dcsdp

Just arrived back from the Avenida. Have to say had a fantastic time - in a party of 9 ranging from grandparents to 3 children aged 3, 14 and 15.
There was something for everyone. The youngest even winning her own Thomson the dog medal. The two older children always had something available for them to do.
The maid service is good for sheets and towels but as for cleaning maybe you are just better having 2 mins yourself. The bar prices are reasonable, especially in the happy hour 2 for 1. David and Sam do a fantastic job with the kids, showing a great amount of energy and enthusiasm every night like its there first night there.
Would recommend to anybody and will be going back myself.

Aug 2007, Mrs J Munro

Spent 2 weeks in the Avenida with my husband and three kids aged 11 months, 4 years and 7 years, and thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it. Kids were extremely well catered for with an absolutely fabulous kids club.
Although we were self catering, we did 7 days flexi dine at the hotel, which I have to say was fabulous value for money.
The Thomson reps were excellent and kept everyone entertained along with "David" in the evenings.
The maids were very friendly, and did a basic tidy up and change of the towels in the room each day.
The bar staff were also very friendly, but often forgot to come back with your change when the bar was busy in the evenings (this only ever happened with one member of the bar staff, but unfortunately did happen 6 times during our holiday)!
Overall had a great time, would definitely return, as we all loved the accommodation, and thought Port Aventura was fabulous.

Just returned from this hotel having...

Aug 2007, Mr J McLoughlin

Just returned from this hotel having booked a last minute deal. We have two girls aged 6 and 9 and this hotel was fantastic for them both.
The hotel reception area is very smart and the reception staff speak perfect English.
The pool area is very well looked after and there is a pool attendant on duty from morning till early evening. The play areas are clean and tidy also ringed by a high fence and only accessible through the hotel reception.
The daytime entertainment (By David)is there if you wish to join in but you are not hassled to take part. The evening entertainment (Also by David) was excellent with four live shows in the week we were there, and also a reps show which was brilliant for adults and children.
You will be welcomed into the dining room by Ana who is so friendly and always smiling. The food was outstanding for both quality and choice. True there are chips at breakfast but there is also around 60 other dishes to choose from, both morning and evening.
The room we had was on the main road side and was noisy but after the first night you do get used to it. The room itself was clean, bathroom was excellent, air conditioning to bedroom and living room, and kitchen was well equipped. The main beds were very hard which our children had, but the sofa beds were far more comfortable which we used. There is plenty of storage.
Went to port Aventura but would not recommend this for any families with children under 1.3 metres tall as they will be restricted to the rides they can use. Also the food is very poor.
The downsides were, some of the hotel guests made you embarrassed to be English with foul language in front of children and anyone else in earshot, the resort itself was very dirty lots of broken glass all over the pavements, everyone expects a tip even shop keepers, the beach was littered with cigarette ends.
One must is have breakfast just before 9 at a window table overlooking the pool, then watch as grown men race for the loungers once the doors have been opened to the pool, it’s so embarrassing its funny
If this hotel was in another resort we would certainly return but we will not be rushing back to Salou to soon.

Aug 2007, Mr D BELL

Just returned from two fantastic weeks at the Golden Avenida. Although this hotel is rated a 3 star it gives the impression it is performing at a higher level with personnel which are not only competent but are extremely friendly.
The evening meal in the Restaurant was very impressive and good value for money. We planned our own trips to Barcelona and used the "Bus Plana" which runs regularly from the Red Lion.
The Italian Restaurant which is 150m from the Hotel (come out of the hotel and turn directly left) is absolutely fantastic. If going to Barcelona buy an open top bus ticket for 19 Euro and do both the Red & Blue route.

Just got back from a week in this...

Aug 2007, Mrs L Windsor

Just got back from a week in this hotel.
The room was clean although a little rough around the edges, the maid did not always clean the room but they managed to put clean towels in each day. The fridge kept things cool but not cold, so milk did not keep for more than one day.
The nightclub just down the road generates a lot of noise on a weekend, but this is not bad if your room is poolside. The beds are rather hard and the pillows are very thin.
The staff are all very nice and work very hard, but watch your change at the bar on a night!
The only real problem we found was the food, we only ate in the hotel twice as is was disgusting. If you like fried food that is tepid you will be ok, nothing seemed fresh, although the salad bar was not too bad.
This was the only thing that let the place down and if they provide meat without the fat, this would be more enjoyable.
The supermarket on site is only open for a few hours a day, but there is one close by so it’s not too much of a problem.
Would not go back, but as we book a late holiday, it was not too bad.

Aug 2007, Mrs J Eardley

We have just returned from a week’s holiday with our two children aged 9 and 13. The apartments were very clean and the staff were all very friendly.
The Thompson rep's were fantastic and they certainly keep everybody entertained day and night, no need to venture out of the hotel.
The pool area is ideal for everyone with a shallow and deep end. The beach is approx ten minutes away but we stayed by the pool as the beach tends to be very busy this time of year.
Shops and places to eat and drink are just two minutes away around the corner, so not far to walk if you fancy a change from the hotel.
We would certainly recommend this to anyone as we would definitely go back.
