I travelled with my husband and my daughter (16 months) to the resort of salou and the Golden Avenida Aparthotel.
About the hotel..... I wouldn't stay there again at all. The hotel itself is fine if you want to be surrounded by chavvy fat brits who get drunk all day and let their kids run riot at night. I've never been so glad to get away from a hotel purely for that reason. Kids would be running up and down the corridors until half two in the morning, playing with the lifts, you name it. Obviously we can't blame the hotel for that, but still...
We were giving a room on the fifth floor overlooking the main road. I'd read some reviews about these particular rooms and them being very noisy. If I'm honest, prior to going I honestly thought people must have been overeaggerating. I thought 'it can't be that bad'. No word of a lie, these rooms are like living next to a motorway. You can't hear yourself think over the sound of coaches and motorbikes and chavs shouting on their way home from the pub. Want a quiet drink on the balcony - forget it - no such thing!!! We did try to get moved rooms, but the Thomson rep was so useless and uncaring that we gave up trying and invested in some ear plugs. Thankfully, my little girl did manage to get to sleep each night, but I spent a good few nights sitting in the early hours wishing the traffic would shut up.
The rooms themselves were ok. Basic but what do you expect? The beds however are so uncomfortable - never been so glad to get back to my own bed. The maids come everyday, but really don't think they do much other than empty the bins and make the beds. The floor in the room was filthy, was like it hadn't been cleaned for months.
Don't be fooled by the rave reviews about the food either. I'm sure these have all been written by the chavvy brits I've mentioned. The food is ok. There is always something you can find to eat. However, I think the chefs have the idea that salt is a spice because most of the food is a la salt. Tastes as salty as the sea water. Great if you want to have a heart attack, but rubbish if you actually want to taste your food.
However, there are loads of great places to eat nearby and a special shout out goes to Lunatic which is just on the front. Their food is to die for - we ate there quite a bit - and the service is second to none!
We didn't see much of the entertainment in the hotel, as like most other places in Salou, the main entertainment started at 10pm and my little girl was mostly asleep in her bed by this time. However, we did venture to the kids club a couple of times, but DON'T GO!!! The reps are so cheesey - they love the microphone a bit too much but you can't understand a word they say and yet again kids are running riot.
Salou as a resort would not be my first choice. It is very pretty and it has pretty beaches but it is fully of fat chavvy brits. The shops are rubbish - rows and rows all selling exactly the same crap as the last one. If you want excellent shopping, you need to head along to Cambrilis. Local buses are ace and you can get to Cambrils for 1.75E. It's only 10 minutes away and is actually where I would choose to stay if I headed back to the region.
Definitley take a trip to Tarragonna if you can - it is absolutley beautiful and very quaint. Some excellent shops there, and eateries and of course, tons of roman architecture if you like that kind of thing.
Port Aventura is a must. Even our little girl loved it and there wasn't that many rides she could go on. We went to loads of shows there and it was a brilliant day out. It can get very hot as there is not much shade, so try to pick a day when it's a bit cooler to go.
Anyway to sum up, I would not go back to Golden Avenida Hotel and I would not go back to Salou. If you want to visit the area, book a hotel in Cambrils, it's much nicer and quieter and you are close enough to explore Salou as you wish, but also far enough away to escape it!

What a great hotel! I booked this holiday from the reviews on this site and was glad i did! How right they are. I came here with my husband and two children age 1 and 2 along with my mum and dad who also agreed this hotel is fantastic and believe me they are well travelled. Rooms are clean and comfortable food was great especially champagne breakfast everyday. They also had special theme nights which im sure took the chefs all day to prepare as everything was so well presented. The entertainment looked fantastic although we did not take part in the day time activities or even get hasseled to we could see how hard the girls worked to keep everyone happy. We were just happy to sit back and watch. The swimming pool is great for the kids as they can just walk straight in! We visited portaventura but found it far to hot for the kids who just ended up irritable so we only stayed 2hours. It is a good theme park with lots to do but is more suitable for older kids and daring adults. Salou itself is a nice resort especially if you walk along the front its beautifull. Only downside is that its just full of shops after shops selling same things! Red lion a nice pub, parrot pub also nice. we didnt eat out so cant comment on any restaurants outside the hotel but if you go half board no need to eat out at night as food just to good to miss. Dont hesitate on booking this hotel it really is very good and worth shouting out about. Just wish we went for 2 weeks.

Definitely a place we'd return to - The hotel was clean, the service exceptional and friendly throughout our 2 week stay and the restaurant was lovely - much nicer than we expected in fact. We opted for a short-haul holiday this year as our youngest is under 2. Usually we go to Florida and were steeling ourselves for our older 2 boys to be disappointed. Far from it though - Salou has it all and we got by for 2 weeks without a car! PortAventura is a 30min walk away (forget the bus if you don't mind a bit of a walk!). The beach is gorgeous and an even shorter walk, with lots of shops, bars, restaurants near to the sea front to potter about in. It's nice down there at night too - lively, but not too much for families. There are various trips to Barcelona too - only an hour away by coach - we did the Camp Nou & Barcelona Zoo day out and it was excellent. Don't forget the Aquopolis Water Park - we swam with Sealions and it was a truly unforgettable experience. Going back next year - course we are..!
One thing to watch out for though - the shopkeepers and stall-holders are quite 'in your face'...We quickly learned to ignore them, but they are willing to barter - we got some bargains!

This hotel was outstanding, apart from the reps!!! Reception staff and the maids were excellent, and our rooms were cleaned, and towels changed daily. The pool was really good, with a lifeguard there at all times too, and thankfully no massive inflatable whales in the pool, as there were no inflatables allowed! The bar staff were also really good, and was open onto the terrace all through the day. The hotel supermarket was also really reasonable, so don't bother taking anything with you, because you can get everything you need there! We also upgraded to half board for 6 days, at 90 euros for an adult, and 45 per child for breakfast and evening meal, which saved us quite a bit of money!! Our kids are 6 and 3, and loved Salou.Champions bar on a Sunday and Thursday had a clown starting at 9 pm which was brilliant. The kids absolutely loved it, and so did we!!! Uncle Sams up near Burger King was also the best best place to eat, as the meals were really big, and excellent value for money!! The Titanic bar is also worth a look for the kids, as there are regular shows in the evening. The kids watched High School Musical whilst we were there, which they thought was fantastic! They had pics with the cast after as well, which they thought was wonderful! Portaventura in the evening was a bit of a disappointment, don't really know what all the fuss was about really!!! The small kids rides closed by 9 pm as well, so when you can't go in til 7, that didn't give us much time to find them all! The trip to Aqualeon, which we booked with the hotel reception was an excellent day out, and much cheaper than with Thomsons! It was an aqua park, and safari in one, cost 29 euros per adult, 17.50 euros per child over 4 years, including transport. An absolute must when visiting Salou is the fountain show, shown at weekends at 10pm, at the end of the beachfront. It combines music and lasers in amongst the fountains, which was absolutely fantastic.

As A 13 year old I just want to say to you all "GO 2 GOLDEN AVENIDA PARK"!!!
I have just got back and I am telling you that I didnt want to leave.I even cried.
First of all the apartments were excellent. We had a big balcony and the apartment itself was very cosy.I went with 3 other people so there were 2 beds in the main room and 2 joined beds in the bedroom. They were very comfy. The cleaners come everyday and change your sheets when stripped and make the place look very clean. Downstairs the receptionists are very nice and very helpful and will advise you how to save on excursions during your holiday. They always have a smile on their face. The restaurant staff are also great and are always there to clean up mess after you have finished and the woman at the till is very friendly and will always ask how you are that day.I thank the Chefs as they set out such a beautiful delicious Buffee every single day and night. In the mornings you will have a wide selection of choices for your breakfast and in the evening it is better as they have a different theme every night and cook the most tastiest foods in the world. THE DESSERTS ARE OUT OF THIS WORLD!! At the bar the waiters are very funny and nice and will always start a good conversation with you aswell at greet you with drinks ETC. Every single day at 4 till 5 there is happy hour were you get 2 drinks for the price of one. Now I would like to tell you the main thing why to come to Golden Avenida Park. COME 4 DAVID.David is the day/night entertainer and he is just the best person in the world. He is Spanish but talks English and is the most funniest and cutest person in the whole wide world. He works so hard as most days when he works he does not stop but always keeps a smile on his face. Of a day he does activities with both children and adults that so dont get boring. For the adults he does things like Rifel Shooting and Water Pollo and for kids Ping pong, football and kids games for awards. Of a night he does the Bingo. He is the most funniest BINGO MAN IN THE WORLD.He makes the whole room laugh whether their happy or even sad.Just Remember when he says "LEGS 11" SHOUT WOOWOOH N when someone wins Bingo put your hands up in the air and sing to ^Olay We are The ChAMPS^!! After the Bingo he presents the shows that are on every night like (LORD OF THE DANCE,BEJJING ACOBATS,FLAMENCO ETC......). David even makes you LOL so much when he presents the shows. Youll know David from a mile away as he has spiky black hair, he always says Hello/Hola on the microphone and of a day he wears a orange top with Entertainment/animacion on the back and of a night a black one. Every single night at the kids disco apart from Tuesday he dresses up as David the clown which entertains the kids !! I love David so Much and will miss Him loads and Loads !!! x
Aswell as DAVID the other 2 entertainers and holiday reps are Kelly and Sarah are also great with the kids. Everything at the Avenida is excellent but if I had to put 2 downers on it it would be that the hotel/apartment itself can get very noisy of a night especially if your apartment is above the main road and also it is about a 10 minute walk from the beach. Although a 10 minute walk it is not that bad as on the way there is all sorts of shops and restaurants on your walk down. Even though I find these the downers I still rate the Golden Avenida 10/10 as everything great beats them. I still say "GO FOR DAVID"!! HE is The Best xxxX You will love him so much /// By Holly (Age 13) x

We have just come back from a GREAT holiday. This was the first holiday abroad for the two youngest children so didnt know quite what to expect. There were 4 adults and 4 children of ages 2, 4, 13 and 16. We arrived very late at night after a delayed flight and on reception the lady said they had made us up some food in the dining room (even though this was shut they had laid on a meal on a plate for everyone). Everyday the hotel staff were really friendly and always made a point of chatting to the children. The rooms were really clean and tidy and our rooms were made up most days (only when my son hang the sign on the door saying please do not disturb they didnt come in). We were on the third floor overlooking the pool which seems to be the best place as I have heard that if you are overlooking the road at the back the noise can be a bit too much at night with a night club nearby. We didnt have any problems at all overlooking the pool. The food was fantastic!! There was so much to choose from and the deserts were amazing! The one thing that did make us laugh is that at about 8.30am there was a que inside the hotel to get out to the pool! We would watch from our balcony and it was like charge of the light brigade. At 8.30am the doors opened and they were off! Everyone running to grab a sun lounger and lay their towel out on it, they then went back inside to get breakfast before returning later. We never joined in and can honestly say never had a problem getting a space by the pool somewhere (even if it was in the shade). The hotel was in a nice walking distance to the beach and we went to a nearby water park which was also a great day out. All in all everyone had a great time. There was entertainment for all ages (even the adults) and the youngest children loved joining in with the disco and then bingo. I would definately return here again and would have liked to stay longer.

Aug 2008, Mrs T Mitchell

We stayed at this hotel in Aug for the 5th consecutive year. We have 2 girls aged 7 and 10 and they both really enjoy the kids clubs at the hotel. This year was no exception. The kids reps are great with all kids. David the golden hotels entertainer is excellent with the day/evening entertainment. I didn't think much to the 2 Thompson reps Kelly & Sarah compared to last years entertainment. They lacked enthusiasm and were often rude and abrupt. The food in the hotel is lovely. I can be a fussy eater but there is so much choice every evening and lovely puddings! The hotel is clean and very friendly. The rooms are ok and are cleaned daily with fresh towels. We have always been lucky with a pool view which is quieter than the roadside. Portaventura is a must but buy your tickets online 14 days for the price of 3 days, also the evenings are cooler and quieter. Salou is very busy high season and can look tacky! The shops sell the same items etc but the fountains along the front and the bars are lovely. Idols bar is good for kids and cheap! Tarragona is a lovely place to visit on the bus it takes about 20 mins, has beaches, shops(large shop mall) and restuarants. We also used the hotel next door Port Salou which is a golden hotel same as the Avenida. This has 3 swim pools and a spa. The spa only costs 5 Euros for a session and was extremely relaxing whilst the kids were taken care of in the Thompson kids clubs! I would definetely visit the hotel again. My one negative point is that when booking Thompsons charge an under occupancy supplement as there are not 4 adults in the 1 bed apartment that we booked, upon speaking with the rep Amy she confirmed that 4 adults cannot sleep in one of these rooms as the 4th bed is only suitable for a child under 12. When querying why the brochure charges each family no one could advise why??? This needs amending.
A fantastic holiday and a great hotel.

Had a fantastic holiday - would...

Aug 2008, Mrs R B Harding

Had a fantastic holiday - would recommend hotel if you have energetic kids like mine.
Loads to do around the pool when kids needs to be entertained. Water Polo, Basketball, badminton, volleyball in the pool and also a sand pit behind pool to play other sports also nice playground area for older children and also small one for infants. My kids loved the cocktail games around the pool, ball in bucket, darts etc which got them out of the sun for a few minutes. Also table tennis in shaded area, my boys took their own bats as they love it in the UK so saves you hiring out bats, not sure if hotel knew mind!!
I used to enjoy Super splash keep fit which is nice and refreshing when the suns out, good Thompson reps, Kelly and Sarah - nice girls!!
I must also say that David (Spanish) entertainer was absolutely F A N T A S T I C so funny and really nice person always doing something different. My husband used to particpate in absolutely everthing, starting off in the mornign with Archery (over 18s), he loved it brought out the competitve side of him.
We came back to Salou as my eldest boy wanted to go on all the rides in Portaventura Theme Park as he was too short last time we came. He loved it, the faster and higher the better, I must admit I just watched but it is great fun and lovely surroundings and loads to do. We purchaed our tickets in travel agent which entitled us to 50% off the Caribre Aqua park which is much cheaper than doing it when your on holiday.
The food in hotel was lovely, loads to choose from, lovely cooked breakfasts, however they could have more kids PLAIN food in evening if you've got fussy kids like mine!! Ana who greeted us every day is SO SO nice, lovely and friendly like a mother figure, however the waitresses could do with a smile on their faces the male waiters were lovely though and the chefs always seemed pleasant, excellent artistic work on their food - well done.
I was always able to get a sun lounger and we never queued or placed our towels on floor at 7.00 am unlike many Brits I am sad to say - what is all that about - sad. Also I have 2 childrenand 2 beds was plenty for 4 of us as you are not all lying in the sun the same time, there are so many greedy people out there trying to take every bed EMBARRASING and SAD!!
Would recommend hotel to others, however I would ask for room overlooking pool as others have said the other side can become a little noisy but hey you are on holiday so that cannot be helped.
Finally, reception staff were freindly and our cleaner was SO nice and helpful really trusting and would come back if inconvenient, fresh sheets and towels everyday and rooms very clean and comfy beds. Rooms lovely and cool with air con so was able to get a good nights sleep
Thanks for a lovely time!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well... where do I start? If anyone...

Aug 2008, Mr D Henderson

Well... where do I start? If anyone rates this hotel below 8 out of 10 there is something wrong with them (a whinger in my books). We only returned yesterday (2nd August 08) and I am slowly sinking into the UK blues - to make matters worse it's pouring down today. However, let's get back to the hotel/holiday review. I have 2 children ages 6 (autistic boy) and 3 (little girl) and they both LOVED the holiday and hotel. We only booked the holiday on the Thursday and flew out on the Saturday for 1 week. We checked out the hotel and reviews on websites like this and took all the comments on board, so it's important to get the correct message across regarding the Golden Avenida Park Aparthotel. It's fantastic, nice and clean, lovely rooms, great staff, superb daytime activities, and an excellent swimming pool complex. Though we were only SC we ate at the hotel after listening to the "half boarders" raving about the food - and they were right in what they were saying. Long gone are the Spain holidays where you pay 2 Euro's for a long drink - the prices there are now similar to the UK - so you will pay 2.8 Euro's for a lager, 3.5 Euro's for a large soft drink and over 4 Euro's for a spirit. We barely left the hotel during the day as the kids loved the swimming pool, similar to us (wife and I) taking a liking to the happy hour (now 4PM to 5PM - buy one get one free). On an evening we ventured out to the promenade and strip of restaurants - we would then return to the hotel for the evening entertainment (Bingo @ 9PM and Singer/Illusionist/Acrobats/Lord of the dance @ 10PM). All in all a brilliant hotel that we'll be looking at going to again next year. 1 week was just not long enough, we were devastated when we left yesterday afternoon. Never mind - we had a great time ! I'll now look forward to reading my wifes review.

Jul 2008, Mrs S  DUNMORE

Only been back a week after having a great holiday in Saolu and staying at a really nice hotel 'The Golden Avenida Park!' What a clean hotel and the rooms are ideal as there set out for self catering, fridge, toaster etc
The hotel and staff come highly recommended. polite, friendly and at all times willing to help whenever they could. The reception staff should take most of the credit as their English and local kowwledge is excellent!!
The food was nothing fancy but cooked nicely and to everyones taste. Salou is expensive for eating out and gets very busy at night so i would reccomend paying for the HB and eat out as an extra treat, you'd still save money I'm sure.
Portaventura park is very good but you must buy your tickets before you go as you will not get a better deal on the gate! We used www.attractiontix where you take your voucher and ID to the gate and they then printed off our tickets for 7 days continuous use. Children do need to be above 1.4m to get the best of everything. Stay for the firework show but get a good view point around an hour before.
Salou can come to life at night and especially at the weekends as the locals seem to park around the hotel, we had a couple of wakefull nights but only because we were road side and they would sing quite loudly between 3-5.30am when they were heading home... there was no trouble and the hotel has security.

the stay at avenida park was amazing it was the best holiday i have ever been on, the entertainment was brilliant especially the entertainer david he made the daytime activities really fun, the rooms were very very up to date and top notch i would probly say the hotel needs to be more than a 3 star, we didnt have any of the foods as we went self catering but it spelt absolutely delicious, the day time food that they served was gorgeous and service was within 5 minutes (foodwise) overall i must say that i would really really reccoment avenida park to all people they also had really good childrens clubs during the day which meant that parents could have time to themselves for a couple of hours the kids clubs were from 10 in the morning up until 5 in the afternoon depending on the age range.
