I went to this hotel reluctantly, dont normally do Spain, but was surprised at the cleanliness and warm welcome and great customer service from staff. Food okay but got quite repetitive, but I didnt starve. Hotel close to beach and Port Aventura theme park.

Pool had a dirty tide mark and mopuld growing around the tiles. The room wasw tatty, the kitchen work tops had broken areas and the bathroom was grim - mould around the tiles, the floor round the toilet had ground in 'dirt' the cistern had brown 'stuff' round the lid. The bath wasn't cleaned and I swept the floors daily, the cleaners only seemed to make the beds - they were also quite rude if you were in your room when the wanted to come and 'clean'. The food was excelent, although I would have liked more than 1 choice of hot veg. I was quite amazed that chips were avaiable at breakfast every day! The kids club 'tots' was great my £ & $ yrs olds loved it and the staff were great. The evening disco although good was drowned out by all the adults chatting at the bar, which was a shame. Last year at a Thompson family holiday (Mallorca) the reps at the disco were really good at getting everyone to be quiet, particularly when the children were doing their turns. Last year we weren't to the minidisco everynight but this year we went about 4 times. We saw Thompson the dog brifly at the disco for his song and round the pool once a day. Salou is dirty, lots of litter, be careful to dodge the dog poo - I was constantly watching where my children were walking. The main beach was heaving so much we strugged to get to the sea to paddle and then we were in the way of all the people just walking up and down the shore line, eventually found a lovely beach (Llarga - turn right out of hotel, up the hill to the top and turn left and the beach is immediately on your right) which almost emptied after lunch. With a double pushchair we constantly had to cross roads as the paths were not wide enough - a real pain. Salou heaves at night, my husband was offered drugs and we were approached by a lad who was high on drugs trying to get us into his bar. Salou is for young people who want to go drinking and clubbing. I would not recommend Salou or avenida and I certainly would not go back. Disappointed with Thompsons standards.

Party: 2 adults, 2 year old, 3 year old.
The hotel: Very clean, some of the rooms a little small, no oven, only microwave. self catering by defination means you ought to be able to cook if you want to. Air con worked very well. The lifts were very small and slow, could hardly fit 2 adults and 2 buggies. Fantastic outside area with pools and play areas that the kids loved. Great location, shops about 5 min walk with buggies, beach about 10 mins.
The reps: We felt ripped off by Thomsons on more than 1 occassion when they over-cherged us, no local knowledge, not helpful at all, avoid like the plague. I have made 2 complaints and as of yet had no response.
The resort:
We have been to Salou before and love the place. You will not find a better beach, great for the kids. Salou is pretty and scenic and very flat, good if you have prams to push. It has a good mix of English and Spanish, with good local attractions, especially Barcelona. If travelling with small children, best time to go is June or Sept. with temperatures in the high 80s. In July and August it gets very hot.
Summary: we would definately go back to Salou, maybe in this hotel, biggest let down was the reps.

i stayed here for 2weeks and was the worst holiday of my life. Everyone is packed in like sardines. the food was disgraceful and often uncooked! if that wasn't bad enough i had a cleaner steal my purse cobtaining the rest of my holiday money plus my credit cards! buut when i complained i was not expecting to be told they could not do anything as my purse wasnt in the safe!
The pool was horrible with a smell of sewage and what looked like fleas everywhere. would never go back here again, steer well clear.

Stayed here last week with my huisband and 2 boys aged 5 and 7 and had fabulous time - hotel was clean and lovely and had everything you wanted - went self catering so we could eat out at night - beacvh is not far away and you have to walk past the shops so can collect shopping from supermarket on way back -
Staff were brilland and catered very much with both kids and adults in mind - Had loads time to relax as kids made friends and went to play in safe enclosed environment
Would def recommend this for families .
Only down side of the holiday was not able to experience much of the spanish life as full of English and irish.

having never ever been to salou me and my family where a bit aprehensive.
i took my wife 2 kids and my mother and father in law to stay at the golden avenida suites in salou.
we where so impressed from the secound we where greeted at the reception...
the hotel staff gave us bags of information and helpfull advice for our stay and when we went to our room i personaly was impressed by the cleanleness of it and the size of the room too.
we stayed half board but next year when we go back we intend to take advantage of all inclusive, the meals are outstanding with lots of choice and believe me im the fussiest eater there is and even i found something to eat.
the hotel entertainment staff and thomson reps are first class the kids club im imformed by my kids is excellent and while the kids are in the club adults can have fun too taking part in such activities as rifle shooting, archery, vollyball, ping pong, killer pool etc and the best thing is if u win one u get a certificate at 8-45 prize giving time hahaha!!!!
i cant say anything other than good things about our stay from the rooms to the pools to the food and the night shows everything was first class and i would definatly recomend this hotel!!!

We went here after much research and it was one of the best holidays we have had. The kids loved it, entertainment is mostly the animation team with some outside acts so it's ok...to be honest it was enough for the kids before they went to sleep. The pool is great with entertainment for kids int he pool, games etc..Rooms are clean and well equiped. If you need anything the staff are REALLY helpful.
Beach was a bit of a walk but situated in town so was great.
Staff were great, service was excellent (can't say it enough). Tons to do around the resort...weekly market, open trains to take you on tours, little funfair..4 different routes, there is the local tourist town where the restaurants are ok...if you walk to the beach in the evening and keep walking a bit futher it goes dead (most people turn back here) but acutally if you carry on for 5-10 mins then suddently opens up into a very upmarket happening part of town with amazing dancing fountains, posh restaurants, desert bars, designer shops etc...we stumbled on it because my wife insisted she wanted to visit a hotel she stayed at years ago - only to find it's the wrong town.
Highly recommended if you have kids around 3+...they will love it and so will you.

Just back from a 2 week stay at this hotel, My second time at it (first time was best holiday i have had). This time we arrived at 11am on the Saturday morning and were told our room would not be ready till 1pm, we had 3 kids one at 13 months, 5 cases and the pushchair and no rep there to advise us what to do with the cases, not a good start, on the Monday one child was sick when we found a rep she told us "that there had been a bug going round the hotel for the last week" not what we wanted to hear, over the next week we had one kid sick each day. The day our youngest son was ill he was sick in the cot and over my bed, The rep said she would sort it, we got handed 2 sheets !mattress in both beds still smelling of curdled milk, nice in the heat. The reps were not interested in anything helping us. One kid not in our party was on a drip with the bug . 2 reps even lied to us about things. This said we had a good second week and the hotel staff were only to keen to help the best they could. would go back to this hotel but not with Thompson's .

First thing is first. The people on here moaning about this hotel are obviously hard to please, and perhaps in future should book elsewhere other than a FAMILY hotel. We are not 'chavs' by the way, as the families were described by others, We are both hardworking and have kids who respect others. I am quite critical myself of.most hotels, but found very little of fault at the Avenida Salou. The appartment was comfortable and kept clean by the efficient maids. Kitchen has microwave, a hob, and every cooking utensil you could ever need. You probably won't need to use the kitchen area though, as you will eat like you have neer eaten before here. The restaurant was second to none. The vast choice and quality of food on offer, with theme nights into the bargain too was fantastic. Simply the best hotel restaurant I have experienced.
The pool was a bit cold, but considering it was October with less hours of sunshine, it is to be expected. The playpark and soft play area was great for our 18 month old. The football park was handy for our older kids. Access to the shops and beach is a few minutes walk. Excursions could be booked through the hotel, but we chose to go with Bus Plana, which was cheaper, but in hindsight I would not recommend. (organised chaos).
The reception, maid service, waitresses, and kidzone entertainers were all friendly and approachable and bent over backwards to ensure you were happy.
The only 'problems' at the hotel were that the room got cold through the night and could do with another few blankets in October, and the cockney entertainer through the day was pretty naff.
All in all, I would rate this hotel at 4.5/5. We will definately be back.

We have just arrived back from this hotel and we had a brilliant time.
The hotel rooms need modernising but were very clean. The reception staff were brilliant and nothing was a problem to them.
The food was great, they even had a seperate buffet for the children. I can imagine that the food would be repetitive if we had been there for two weeks but I was impressed with what we recieved. One night they had roast beef and real yorkshire puddings it was lovely.
The entertainment staff were fantastic they never stopped the whole time we were there. There was games going on all day to keep kids and adults busy (Golf, table tennis, water polo, quizes, giant jenga, limbo, killer darts, speed pool, giant connect four, volley ball etc. My 12 year old joined in on the day time activities and my 3 year old loved the kids mini disco.
Keep up the good work Leanne, Davey, Chelsea and David you were all fantastic and a credit to the Thomson team.
We only left the hotel on two ocassions to go to the Portaventura Theme park. The theme park was good but I wasn't impressed with the smoking situation there were no designated areas and people were even smoking in the lines which wasn't good if you had a 45 minute wait for a ride.
Salou itself was quite dirty and I was shocked as I thought it had been cleaned up, but we never ventured out much so this didn't spoil our holiday.
Hope you all enjoy your holiday as much as we did. I will definitely be recommending this hotel to family and friends.
Lyndsey, Steven, Brandon and Alex.
