Overall poor impression
from Symro01
Stayed for 2 nights in May 07. Hotel has a great spa and the food is good - however, the rooms are appalling. The whole place creaks, the walls are wafer thin, there is about enough room to swing a cat in the ensuite (so much so that the sink was in the bedroom!). The bed was uncomfortable and the room smelt. Very over priced for what you get.
great food

Stayed at the Bay for a valentines break with my wife. We really enjoyed it the hotel is in a spectacular position. The service was friendly and enthusiastic. In particular the food was of the highest standard, the bar was uber trendy. We have booked to return in April when their new spa is built.

from nighthawk8
traveled with newmarket coach holidays,in small group from wiltshire. tour guide and coach driver where very good all though our long weekend stay. when we frist saw the fristal bay hotel,we thought it needs a good paint, but when we got inside it was ok,everything was clean but dated. the staff where very friendly, and helpful. the food was fantastic, even had an eight course gala dinner, there was always plenty of veg etc,for the table and the food was hot. all in all the weekend was enjoyable
Was wary due to some of the reviews
from Velvet47
Went with Newmarket Coach trip and was a bit wary due to some of the reviews but it was not as bad as some of the people made out. Room was basic but I think we were in one of the smallest rooms they had. Tea/Coffee facilities very good - even biscuits were supplied. Food was excellent although I think they had some problems with staff not turning up. Bar prices were very reasonable and entertainment supplied on 2 out of the 3 nights we were there. Public bus service not too bad from hotel every hour (bus driver dropped us off right outside the hotel even though the bus stop was only a few more yards further on!! Only disappointment was that the hot water boiler broke down on our first day there so could not have a shower - only method of hot water was from the kettle in the room. Still, boilers do break down occasionally, don't they? Regarding the smoking in the bar area - it was not too close to the eating area. I did not notice a problem with it even though a few people were smoking there. Plenty of other seats in the hotel if you didn't want to sit too near a smoker.
Fantastic, warm and welcoming
from Worthingtons
Upon arrival the staff were friendly and welcoming. The rooms were excellent and the distance to the beach was a leap from the hotel but a good climb too. The rooms were excellent with very good facilities, i.e. shower, toilet and sink plus coffee/tea making facilities. Comfort was also highly rated. Meal times were fantastic, again with friendly staff serving your table, and enormous portions of food that were just too much for myself. One downside to this is that they allowed for smoking inside the bar area with was also part of the dining room, meaning you got a smokey atmospere when ever anyone lit up after eating. Evening entertainment was good, but put on for an earlier generation that what I have been used to, however the bar prices were excellent with cask ales and a vast selection of Single Malt Whiskey's available. Be prepared to eat well when visiting here - an eight course meal was provided on the last day which was a struggle to say the least. (The yorkshire puddings were enormous!) I do have to add that the food was fantastic and they provided a large selection of home made desserts. Overall: Comfort 8.5/10 - Food 9.5/10
Fistral Bay Hotel Don't Stay
from mrslucy
My husband, daughter and myself stayed in this hotel last year - for two weeks! We had to pay on arrival as well, otherwise we would not have stayed more than one night. We booked this hotel through local TI leaflet some six months prior. Our room size was ok, but dirty, smelly and in need of a thorough clean. We bought air fresheners as well as the smell was so bad. The bedding was absolutley disgusting, but as the weather was glorious, we slept with just a sheet over us - the bedding was NOT changed for the whole fortnight- how disgusting is that? Yes we did complain and I actually spoke to the cleaner and requested clean bedding but nothing happened. The food was, at times, just unbelievably disgusting and inedible. There are far far better Guest Houses and B&B's as well as hotels that have a far higher standard of everything than Fistral Bay. We looked around a few, as we would return to Newquay but I would rather sleep on the beach than stay at the Fistral Bay "Hotel" I don't think so !!!!
Do not stay at the Fistral Bay
from Sabden
We had to pay almost immediatel on arrival. never had to do that before. Room was smelly, dirty and small. Bathroom was dreadful. Terrible fetid smell all week. The whole hotel needs a damn good cleaning everywhere. Even the lift was dirty. Wehad to buy air fresheners to try to alleviate the awful pong. I found the place awful. If it hadn't been for the glorious weather, we would have returned home. They could learn something from hotels in Spain wich are cleaned thoroughly. Clean up your act Fistral Bay. We did complain but didn't get very far. Were told by receptionist that we were late availability. What theheck does that mean. Doesn't matterif you are bargain tourists or Lady Whatsername. Accommoation should be CLEAN.
Loved the food

I have just returned from the Fistral Bay Hotel. Accomodation average. Food excellent, three course meals, Full english breakfast, Third night banquet supper. All I can say is that I can be a fussy eater but I never left any food over the three day package. I also was torn with what to order. Staff were very efficient and pleasant.Overall I personally give the hotel a high rating. Rooms are basic decor could be improved, but taking into account the cost of our weekend package. This is minor nit picking. We went with Newmarket Travel 3 nights ,Half board excursions to The Lost Gardens Of Eden,The Eden Projact . Only problem is journey extra long because of pick ups in different parts of the country.
Don't Go!

We booked, and had to pay in full (over £1000.00)on arrival for a 2 week break for myself, husband and our daughter who joined us for the 2nd week. Oh how I wished we had paid the morning after our arrival! Had we not paid there was NO WAY we would have stayed another night. The room was quite smelly and musty not only in need of a thorough clean but a coat of paint everywhere. Bathroom very shabby with shower working intermittently. Our bedding was NOT changed for the whole fortnight - we actually believed our bedding had been slept in because it was creased and not at all fresh smelling. The actual duvet was absolutely disgusting. VERY stained and VERY smelly, which I removed and we slept with just the duvet cover. I did tell/ask housekeeping but nothing was done. Towels were changed every day because I dumped them on the floor, but they were very stained, oviously not washed in hot water. The food was on most occasions very inferior with the most disgusting bread and toast I have ever had in my life.We had to make the best of a very bad job, we could have made a fuss but we were on holiday and did not want it spoiling. On our return home I did write to the Manager but have not had the courtesy of a reply! I have stayed in better Youth Hostels (St Pancreas London -fantastic)than this 3* hotel. Looking at the reviews in this page I think Newquay Hotliers need to learn from these reviews. Going to Cornwall this year? Not on your nelly - Norway here we all come.

My wife and I stayed at the Bay Hotel, Pentire, Newquay, in September 2010. We booked one of the best rooms with the best view. The view is tremendous - provided you look over the hippie vans that line the front of the hotel where illegal camping takes place. The room is... more
