" We were pleasantly surprised by these... "
Submitted By: Miss N A AustinI'm not very good at summarising but I'll do my best!
Apartments right in the centre of Koukounaries with 2 separate routes up small dirt tracks (approx 5 mins walk) - either to the left or right of Stamelos Bar - we tended to use the right hand path more!
Our apartment initially looked a bit of a let down as it was very dark inside and looked quite basic but first impressions should NOT count in this case, believe me!!
We spent no time at all in the apartment during the day as we were on one of the 5 beaches within walking distance so the the initial darkness didn't bother us again.
Apartments were cleaned EVERY day by Magda who spoke no English but was a lovely, sweet woman!
On the last day we were putting crockery away when I had an unfortunate accident & broke about 5 plates and bowls - I fully expected to pay for the damage but Magda said not to worry!
You should bring your own bath towel but write up states this clearly.
Also, DO bring a torch as the walk back at night is unlit but beautiful looking up at the stars!
The best bit about the Magda apartments was the pool area. It really felt like out own personal pool - hardly anyone used it and it was totally spotless - in fact the pool shower/toilet area was almost nicer than our apartment one!
Mandraki & Elias beach was accessed out of the gate by the pool area and turn right - good 20 mins walk through lovely forest area, some of it uphill.
Koukounaries beach was as busy as they say it is at peak time but go approx 11am and there are plenty of sunbeds and it didn't feel claustrophobic as it's huge!
Banana Beach nice through the day but a bit Ibiza party crowd when the sun went down - I'm a party animal in my mid thirties but the loud music on repetitive almost drove me mad!!
Ambelakia Beach (accessed by turning sharp left as if heading for Banana and go past the derelict Xenia Hotel) was lovely - steep to get to and steep stairs down but maybe this is why is seemed a lot quieter and peaceful!
Nightlife - Stamelos Bar was great for cocktails - not sure about the restaurants next to it - we had a very dodgy meal on first night. Wholeheartedly recommend Elias Mandraki hotel restaurant - come down from apartment and 5 mins on the left & Asprolithus restaurant in Skiathos Town was totally amazing - the best food we've ever tasted.
We didn't hire a car - didn't need to, but we got the bus into Skiathos Town 2 nights. The bus IS busy but not as bad being based in Koukounaries as that is practically the last bus stop so no problem getting a seat - quite amusing also!
Strofilius restaurant towards the far end of Koukounaries bay was lovely too for pizza and Italian food - outdoors surrounded by fairy lights and beautiful stray kittens (I wanted to take them all home!)
Captain Michaelos didn't do the best food.
Definitely do the evening boat trip to Skopelos - it was beautiful - we ate at a taverna and did Greek dancing at a fantastic cocktail bar cut into the rocks.
Overall, Koukounaries was great with excellent beaches and some lovely bars - Magda apartments were great for what we wanted - good, clean, basic facilities with a fantastic pool and sunbeds!
Very much recommended!

Submitted By: Mrs Sue KeeganThe beaches in Koukanaries are stunning, but the main one gets very crowded in peak season. If you don't mind a slow 15 minute walk through the sandy forest, you can be on Madraki, elias or Elena beach which are much quieter and even more stunning. All the tavernas on the beach are well equipped and very friendly. The Bus service into Skiathos Town run every 15-20 minutes and only take 30 mins to reach the town, although sometimes these can get very crowded. The town itself is beautiful and has plenty of tourist shops to look around. The old port and new port are well worth a visit. I will booking to go there next year as it is such a beautiful island.

Submitted By: Miss L SpencerIsland itself is enchanting, green, hilly and stunning views. We loved it and would love to go back. Buses run every 15mins and there is a bus stop right outside stamelos bar to take you to the other resorts and the wonderful skiathos town. Restaurant thats highly recommened in skiathos town is Asprolithus we went there 3 times in one week. Would recommend for families and couples as probably not enough going on for singles (skitahos town is probably better option).

Submitted By: Katie HThe pine trees and fruit groves surrounding the place look and smell beautiful. It is an idylic area of Koukounaries, a short distance from the main road, there is no noise pollution, no cars nearby and yet it is so close to the beach, its a real gem. My only slight annoyance was the dirt track is quite dusty (it wrecked my killer heels) but its hardly a problem.
There is a nice pool at the hotel, beautiful views and very peaceful. The rooms are lovely, me and my brother had a 3 bed apartment to ourselves and found it very clean and spacious. There was a basic kitchen, fairly comfy beds, a large bathroom with a good shower, and a balcony with fantastic views over looking the pine forests and pool. The maid is an angel, she came everyday and always left the place immaculate.
Like I said, the hotel is very close to the beach, depending on which you go to (there are four within walking distance) koukounaries beach is 5 minutes away and there is a nice walk through the nature reserve you can do instead of following the roads. The other beaches; Mandraki, Mandraki Elias and The Hidden Beach are all picturesque and much quieter than the popular Koukounaires. Walking to them is about 20 mins at a medium pace and the tracks to them are very pretty and quiet.
Just 200 metres from Magda there is the main street, there are several bars and tavernas along this road, which is usually fairly quiet. The tavernas themselves are fantastic, very friendly staff, lovely food catering for vegetarians and traditional greek food. There are a few Fish speciality restaurants. The bars are very english friendly, not too crowded but also not empty, these bars are very nice and none of them are particularly expensive. My particular favourites are Elias (a very cosmopolitan restaurant with fantastic food and views), The Village (for its friendly staff and lovely food) and Captain Michaelos (for the owner, a true greek character and a charming host). The big bad wolf is recommended for its child friendly atmousphere, as is Strofilia. Hera (Hotel Muses) is also a good restaurant, in fact, I never had a bad meal whilst I stayed in Koukounaries. My favourite bar was Stamelos for its array of cocktails, extremely welcoming staff and the vibe you get there is very relaxing.
All in all, Magda is fantastic, I will certainly be staying again next year and possibly the one after that as well : )

" Very basic accommodation, but very... "
Submitted By: daviedThe towels are ridiculously small and some worn through so that you can see through the fabric. The walls are extremely thin, and the slightest disturbance sets the owners dogs off. They live in apartment 6 and speak very little English.
It is set back nicely from the road, and is at the edge of the forest. It is 10 mins from the beach.
I personally would not stay there again, as the room we had next to the owners was dark and difficult with the owners looking over you the whole time.
The trip with Kosmar was also ridiculously long.
On the return flight our luggage was collected 7 hours before the flight, and we had to be picked up 4 hours before the flight. We were also not told that the plane went via Kavala which meant a 5 hour return flight to Gatwick.

It is a very nice, basic and clean place with a very romantic garden, there is nothing for kids But if you are travelling as a couple its really relaxing ,very close to the best beaches on The island.
Cleaner will come every day to clean and put fresh towels.
The only thing is Uncle Magda loves cash too much
Rooms have air conditioners but you got to pay for each time you use them
Also you need to pay 10 Euros for the safe box.
All in all we enjoyed our time and loved the place ,I would definitely go back there,
Advice: very nice very expensive
Activities: seafood restaurants, 60 different beaches
Good for: Beach
