Repellent Experience
from rjbrowne
We were very sorry to have wasted our money and spoiled a big part of our holiday by choosing to stay at Mayfair. The building itself is visually unappealing up close, unlike in the photos ... it's been poorly kept and has an unattractive, dilapidated look about it, readily apparent as soon as you walk in the door. Checking in does nothing to dispel this impression; the staff are generally short and unfriendly, and their T&Cs require you to pay at check in, before you've even seen what you've paid for! That's on top of the booking deposit. Not even good hotels try and get away with that. In our case, what we paid for was a double and a single room, neither of which had been properly cleaned (there were cobwebs and rubbish left in the room), and worst of all the double bed's sheets didn't appear to have been changed since the previous occupants had left. When we asked for them to be cleaned properly, half-hearted efforts were made. Not only is Mayfair dilapidated, it is filthy. The televisions in the rooms were almost too small to focus on, and the double room's was far too high to watch in comfort. Incredibly (in this day and age) it was a choice of the big four channels, with a poor analogue signal. The rooms had no telephones. One of our en suites had a bath\shower with nowhere to attach the showerhead, the other had a very tiny walk-in shower. Smokers were invited to congregate outside the single room, and the window didn't close properly. This was also a problem at night when the poorly attended lounge bar's entertainer decided to have his enormous speakers far too loud. Ability to sleep and\or hear oneself think was also challenged by the creaking floorboards above, and some kind of loud machinery directly above the rooms that would turn on randomly. The breakfast offered was not pleasant, and had little to choose from for vegetarians (there was no continental breakfast). To add insult to injury, there was no buffet, everything having to be ordered from forgetful waiters, some of whom had little English. To add the cherry on the pie, we discovered after we got home that we'd been ripped off over the "inclusive" ferry price. They charged us more than we could have paid ourselves if booked separately, AND more than the ferry people say they charge hotels booking inclusive fees. They basically made an extra dishonest buck off us. I want to make it VERY clear that we pointed ALL this out to staff during our stay - there was ONE person who worked there who tried at least to be helpful on occasion, but in most cases they did nothing and basically seemed completely uninterested in the very clear problems. Even though our stay with them is over, we would be very happy for the hotel to apologise sincerely, and offer compensation (especially for the rip-off over the ferry price). However I doubt it will ever happen - if they don't understand the concept of customer care when the customer is in their building, I doubt they've even heard of customer after-care. You certainly can't say that we haven't given the management plenty of opportunity to sort things out. To anyone reading this - please don't put yourself through a stay here. A bad building with useless facilities and rude, incompetent staff is a great way to wreck a holiday.
Please save your money

I wholeheartedly agree with the review entitled 'repellent experince' except when we went, there were no coach parties booked therefore in such an event there is no evening meal or evening entertainment provided (they'll take your money for an evening meal anyway - you then have the problem of arguing your case with staff that seemingly fail to comprehend you - see below) I found this website after my husband had booked with this 'hotel' and with such mixed reviews here I didn't know what to think so figured we'd thnk positively and not expect a great deal and we got a whole lot less than we expected. The premises and the service were so dire we didn't even bother to wait to find out what 'breakfast' might entail we just wanted to be out of there. Horrible experience - everything was dirty and run down in the extreme and the staff were few and far between and those we did see spoke little or no English therefore any chance at communication was hampered from the off. The shower gave approximately 5 minutes of luke warm water; the shower door did not close and in addition the most incredibly loud noise was heard from the pipes/system every time a toilet in the room above was flushed - this would startle you awake several times during the night. We didn't take any photographs (we tried not to be there any longer than necessary) but all photographs shown on this website are a more than fair representation of the place. I understand modernisation is costly but there is no excuse to my mind for anywhere to be dirty and put simply the place hasn't been properly cleaned in a very, very long time. Please heed this review and don't give any of your hard earned cash to this establishment - they have done nothing to consider the customer and honestly don't deserve to have any custom.

We are at a lossw to understand this review. During late October until present, we have been on a Bed and Breakfast rate only. No evening meals were included in the rate and no evening entertainment was advertised. If this guest had problems with their room, we would have offered a room move immediately. The hotel is NOT DIRTY. Yes it is tired looking which we have explained before that due to a heavy 2008 booking diary inherited from the previous proprietor, the new management have not had the opportunity to upgrade and refurbish. Rather than leaving scathing remarks like this review. It would have been more appropriate to advise the proprietors of any complaints whilst at the hotel. We can help while guests are here. We can do nothing to once they have left.
Warm Hotel, Okay experience
from joseph_22
Needed a place to stay for the weekend so i chose the mayfair because of the decent rates on offer. The rooms were what can be expected of a two star hotel; tv, bed and shower, views out of the window were nice aswell. Delicious breakfast and kind staff, a decent experience overall.
Best for the Bestival
from JiggsLondon
Booked rooms for the bestival weekend at the mayfair. The staff at the mayfair were friendly. the room itself waas very presentable with a modern shower. the location of the hotel was next to perfect with beautiful sea views and a five minute walk from the shanklin beach. the whole group had a great weekend with first class music comfortable accomadation and excellent views of the ocean from are rooms. the staff at the hotel helped us out big time as taxis where hard to find on the bestival weekend. one of them drove us to the bestival and picked us back up. if it wasnt for them we would have missed the festival.. thank you mayfair
Amazing Views and great Value for Money
from Dave403
After a look round at the other hotels on offer in Shanklin, my wife and I decided at the Mayfair Hotel. We were given a very nice room on the second flor with spectacular sea views. In terms of value for money, this hotel was excellent! We had a very modern room, internet access, a very relaxed bar area and great food. The receptionist was very friendly as well as the bar staff. Overall, we had a fantastic weekend break. I would definately book again.
MADE FAWLTY TOWERS LOOK LIKE THE RITZ.

We have just returned from a 5 day National Holiday trip at the Mayfair Hotel. The hotel is grotty and desperately needs a facelift . The first night we got there, we were ferried straight into the dining room before we were shown to our rooms whereby we witness the unorganised service in the dining room. I really felt sorry for the waiting staff as it was clear they were overworked. Food was very basic due to the chef doing a runner the night we arrived.(so we were told). POOL WAS GRIMY and didn't want my two children going in which was a big disappointment to them. Luckily, the beach in a stones throw away. Rather they took their chances in the sea! Room was very big and contained a double bed, 2 singles and a cot. Plenty of room to walk around in it. Bathroom was tiny. Had to sit sideways on the toilet as my knees hit the wall if I sat properly on it. Shower cubicle was grimy and a lovely blue bucket was positioned under the pipes near the toilet to catch the drips from the leaking pipe WHICH YOU COULD ANNOYINGLY HEAR THROUGH THE NIGHT. Welcome pack tells you there is a rotary dryer in order to dry your beach towels. When I asked to use it I was told they didn't have one but could put them on the radiator (which was cold) so towels remained soaking wet. Towels changed every day however some guests complained that theirs had been changed once in five days. (Tip: leave them on a pile in the floor). Some rooms could not be locked from the inside(one lady travelling alone had to put her unpacked suitcase in front of the door before she went to sleep). Came away convinced that the people running it don't have a clue(did feel quite sorry for them as they were quite friendly but out of their depth).

We would have really appreciated this guest approaching our staff with any complaint they may have had. We would have done our utmost to rectify the problem and given them a room move. We, at the Mayfair, have not long taken over this hotel and due to a heavy diary inherited from the previous owners, have, in effect, not been able to implement the desired upgrading of our hotel. This will be carried out during the coming months before we begin the full swing season beginning in March 2009. If guests do not allow the opportunity of recifyiong their problems whilst staying, there is not much we are able to do once they have vacated the hotel. We have National coaches on a continuous basis and 99.9% leave us having enjoyed their stay. We are very sorry to hear that this guest did not.
Basic Hotel
from Greece2008Yorkshire
The Mayfair Hotel is very basic inside with Late 80s style interior which made it feel old and run down. It needs totally redecorating. The rooms were moderately sized with a T.V which did not have a remote, tea and coffee facilities and a small en-suite bathroom. One of the rooms had a bath which was very small with a small ledge to sit on at the back. The food was more homely than restaurant style; e.g. cottage pie, cauliflower cheese, roast dinner. Food was table served by a waiter/waitress which was often a bit slow. Dinner was a three course meal with about three options for each course which were ordered at breakfast for the evening meal. The swimming pool was a small kidney shaped pool. The Hotel car park has been built in a strange way which means reversing on a very high narrow slope which is quite difficult. The communication between the hotel and customer didn’t seem to work as I sent an e-mail 3 days before departure but did not receive a reply. If you wish to go on the beach/ Esplanade there is a massive hill to climb which is okay if you are young and have your full walking ability but would be a climb for certain people. When I asked the staff to tell me about the bus information in the local area it felt like asking somebody who had recently moved to the area. The insulation in the rooms was hardly noticeable as music playing in the lounge at 11pm at night was tremendously loud. Rooms near to the Bar e.g. room 28 is no good for people who wish to get to sleep before 11pm. It was nice that there was a porter to carry all necessary bags/ suitcases. Breakfast was traditional such as cereals or fruit juice, full English or beans on toast or scrambled egg on toast or poached egg on toast or kippers with brown bread. No coffee at breakfast. Overall I wouldn’t stay in this hotel again nor recommend it.
Overpriced for basic accommodation
from Palacemonkey
Decided to go to the Isle of Wight at very short notice for the bank holiday weekend, and after ages on the internet, this was literally the only hotel with availability which was along the isle of wight train line. The hotel cost £84 for one nights b&b, and to be honest we have to say that it was very overpriced for the standard of accommodation. The hotel was predominantly frequented by large coach groups, and I don't know if we were just unlucky but their guests were all up at the crack of dawn to have a 5.15 breakfast before an early departure which was a bit noisy The hotel is basically a basic 2 star built in the 1960's. To be honest a Travelodge would put it to shame - most of the fixtures and fittings were old fashioned and pretty basic, and the look of the place was 'economy' and 'functional' rather than any sort of luxury or quality. The ensuite bathroom in our room was a real relic of the 60's - to be honest I haven't got a problem with a shower over the bath, but at least provide a shower curtain! The breakfast was ok, if a little of the mean portion side. You would understand all of this if you had paid £50 a night for a double, but at £84 we felt we'd been done, especially when we past so much nicer looking accommodation. The 2 diamonds it has are a fair reflection of the hotel. Overall, if it was the last b&b in shanklin I'd book it, but to be honest I'd choose just about anywhere else first if at alll possible. Best word to sum it up is 'dissapointing'. Maybe if you are on a coach holiday and you get a really cheap deal, then you can't complain, but if you're paying full rate, you'll be a bit dissapointed with it. Quite a walk from the station and the old village too.
lovely holiday

just returned from a 5 day trip with national holidays to the mayfair hotel isle of wight. Our driver Peter very good on history of the area could have been a bit more helpful to eldery passengers getting on and off coach. Hotel could have done with a facelift our room cramped but beds and towels clean and serviced well. Food good and plentiful also a vegetarian choice each day, dining staff very good.Entertainment every evening which was o.k. no lounge to sit in and be quiet. As we had good weather it was a very good holiday and the hotel was nicely situated for access to walks in the area.
We have stayed at many places on the ISLAND and non can match THE MAYFAIR for its very LOW STANDARDS. The STAFF when AVAILABLE were RUDE and COULD NOT CARE LESS. The ROOM AND BATH ROOM were NOT CLEAN when we arrived and no cleaning was done while we were there.THE FOOD was... more
