Nothing really wrong with the Cay Beach

O.M.G. don't some people whinge about nothing.
Ross the rep was great - one of the best I have met.
Yes, the Cay Beach is not 100% "new", but it was clean and tidy.
The pools were very clean.
Bungalow was very good.
Pool bar snacks - excellent.
Always enough sun beds to go around (how many places can say that? Eh?).
The cats were a diversion, but never troublesome.
Bus to the beach was good, but if you missed it, the walk is not too bad.
Pity the Cay Beach Princess is a longish walk to restaurants, etc, but we knew that when we booked. BTW - try the Chinese restaurant at Faro2 centre - excellent. Also the Italian restaurant by the "waterway" heading towards the beach.
Only real complaint was the woman in the next door bungalow with the LOUD VOICE - I just hope her holiday companion was deaf - I would have stuffed a rag into her gob after
2 days!!!

if anyone tells you this is a 5* or even 4* hotel they are wrong bugalows would have to be between a 2* or 3* pool area wouild be around a 4* if you was to stay in a really nice place try the costa melonares in maspalomas it is fab and for around the same price as the cya princess.

Dec 2008, jakeggnan@hotmail,com

just returned from cay beach princess bungalows. small pool was very cold for first week jacuzzi was warmer but spa beds were out of order for the full 2 weeks. no entertainment to talk of, we're use to going to 4* accomodation and that was not 4*...
however food in pool bar was very good. bungalows were very small and tv's were like a postage stamp, no sky tv. no lounge, nowhere comfortable to sit in fact it was only the sun that saved the day.

  • Advice: holiday world was very colourful made a great evening out
  • Activities: undiscovered GranCanaria with Last Minute Travel was very good

Oct 2008, Miss H McClay

Had a brilliant 7day holiday at cay beach with my boyfriend. Rooms were very spacious and clean, the only problem was the plastic sheets underneath the sheet on the bed! There is a few cats that hang around the bungalows but all they are after is a saucer of milk and they are harmful! pool was huge, plenty of sunbeds for everyone. Staff were friendly! The only big problem was how remote it was, there isnt much around therefore it is necassary to get taxis almost everywhere! But apart from that it was the perfect holiday!

The only reason I have given this...

Sep 2008, Mrs W Hames

The only reason I have given this resort 3 is for the swiming pool where we spent a good deal of the time we stayed there as it was the only place the cats could or did not go into. Altho they did stroll round the outside , under the sun beds, thru reception in fact wherever they liked. Being woken in the night by cats fighting and going out to see cat poo on the patio table or finding 4 or five cats outside crying to come in then being informed that there are many more on site completely spoiled our holiday. Apart from basic hygine standards if I wanted to holiday with that amount of cats I would have booked into an animal shelter. As the complex is so isolated it was necessary to get the beach bus or taxi or stay with the cats. Last beach bus comes back at 4.15 so an afternoon or night at the beach is out unless you get a taxi. We booked loads of excursions as we needed to get away from cats and after all there is only so much time you can spend swimming as the hydro beds still werent working and the jacuzzi was tempermental that just left bingo in the evening or walking to the Princess hotel and enjoying their entertainment. Eventually (at our own cost) we moved to Playa de Ingles as that was the only resort Thomson advised us their were vacancies and thoroughly enjoyed the rest of our stay in Gran Canaria. The only way we could get moved was to contact Thomson direct in London as Ross kept assuring us their wasnt a cat problem well 7 cats or more between your accommodataion and the pool amounts to a problem for us and we are animal lovers with pets of our own. Also Thomson trips were over priced having taken a bus to Mogan for 5 euros we booked the market trip at over 40 euros only to be taken to Mogan and then returned 3 hours later. Again all Ross said was he couldnt see a problem. We feel let down by Thomson on many issues and will be wary of booking with them again

Just returned from a great two weeks...
8 / 10
Sep 2008, Mr S Kennedy

Just returned from a great two weeks in Gran Canaria. Set off a bit concerned after reading some of these reviews but we thought it was ideal.
ACCOMODATION:
Two of us shared a self catering bungalow which had more than enough space. Yes its only the bedroom which has air-con but thats all you need as each place has a table and chairs outside where you can eat no matter what time of day, and your therefore never really sitting in the living areas much. Cleaned and new towels 5 times each week. Its worth noting that there isn't an oven (only 2 hobs and a micro) but we didn't eat in that much anyway.
POOL/BAR
The pool is huge. Can be chilly in the morning but its what you need in the heat and its fine once your in. The pool bar can be expensive (3 Euros for just over half pint) but happy hour is well worth making the most of as you get two of whatever you order for the same price. Evening entertainment fine but not overly exciting (but you dont go to stay in all week)
TRANSPORT
Taxis the best way to get around. About 3 Euros to the beach and restaurants at Maspalomas, just under 4 Euros to Playa de Ingles.
EATING/DRINKING
We mainly ate down the waterfront at the Lighthouse at Maspalomas. 'Grill Faro' amazing meal (although you do pay a bit more). ''The 19th Hole also lovely and Thomson customers get 20% off all food and drink.
Chinese called 'Tony Chui's' near the British Centre in Playa de Ingles is great value for money and great food and right next door is 'Maccars' bar which is 1 Euro a pint!!!
ENTERTAINMENT/ACTIVITIES
The waterpark is a good day out. We went on a Sat and it wasn't too busy at all. Garbo's night (which will be explained when you go) is well worth the money. A great show, good meal, and the free bar just flows and flows.
SHOPPING
The shop at the bungalows is ideal for wee bits but can be expensive. Best supermarket is EuroSpar in San Fernando (3.50 in taxi) Definatley worth it if your there for two weeks.
All in all we had a great holiday and would recommend it to others. Its not 5 stars but its great value for money and a brilliant place to just go and relax.

oh, how can i forget to mention the best to eat.....
LAS CAMELIAS- super self service buffet on avda.tirajana (name of the road), about 3 euro taxi will get you there.
for 9.95 euro and cheaper for under 8, you can seriously eat as much as you like, mussels, prawns, salad, cheese, bread, pizzas, chips, fresh grill to order, stew, soups, ice-creams, fruit, pudding and more and more.
so if when you eat out, you like a 3 course meal, this place will save you LOADS.
we went there 3 times in 2 weeks. (our children eat loads)
chinese buffets are another bargain, between 6-7 euros and 1/2 price for kids, best ones are by the beach playa del ingles.
ENJOY

thank you so much for other advicers, we went there well prepared with cereals, coffee and tea, shame no one mentioned about sweet and crisps for the kids. also sauce like salad cream, ketchup etc. and after reading about ross-the-rep, we met him finally, yep, very helpful. and also melissa and her smile, from 11am with football to 9.30pm with bingo, still smiling.
very tidy bungalow, cleaners starts about 8am. never did breakfast at the restuarant, but pork chop for dinner was very valuable, 5.70 for 2 chop big chops. toasties by the pool was reasonable too. the water was a bit cold if you just want to float in there. light sleepers may have problems with people checking in 3am, but i didnt.
many mentioned about yumbo centre, not bad. but we prefered the anexco which is off the beach playa de ingles, about 4 euro by taxi. the beach was a lot better then maspalomas.
kids had great fun scuba diving (through ross) and sand boarding throught a leaflet in reception (PR surfing), but you have to book yourself. we highly recommend these 2 if you have kids between 10 - 15ish. but not yellow submarine and the sioux city did not interest the kids nor us at all.
car hire to tour the island is a must, you cant get lost. you can also top up cheaper food in supermarket (hyperdino is a good one) inland while you got the car. really worth the trip. expect at least 2 euro difference on a loaf of bread, a few rashers of bacon etc.
remember to take kids essentials like crisps, sweets, cereals, biscuits etc. i will try and load some food photos.
apart from expensive shopping, we had a really great time, lovely and tanned all over. kids really enjoyed it and that's the main thing.
have fun!!

just arrived home form cay beach what can i say after seeing some of the reviews i was a little worried, the bungalows are clean and very relaxing and have a great little patio area that you can sit and have your breakfast, the pool is very nice and clean but not enough parasols to go round so you have to get up around 6 - 7 am to get a sunbed and parasol which was not much fun as you really need these as it gets very hot and are a must for children, they have a happy hour twice a day but found that they put the price up a little on the drinks at this time which was not quite right and the drinks are expensive 8 euros for two rum and cokes. the staff are friendly and polite and so was ross but again his welcome meeting talk is a little wearing after you here it over and over again. the air conditioning is 6 euros a day but it only works in one of the rooms in which it is fitted so the other rooms remain very warm and after paying 60 euros for this i was very disappointed as you can hire fans which works out alittle cheaper. you will need plenty of spending money as the food and drink is very expensive in the gran canaria now as dear as spending a holiday in britain and most of the people we met mentioned this. the bungalow gardens have many cats that like to come into your room if you leave the door open and bring you their kittens, i thought this was great as they were really friendly and the kittens gorgeous and fun to see them playing and climbing up the tree's and my children loved them ,but i did only let them stay outside and fed them everyday. their is no oven but a microwave and two rings on a stove which took forever to get hot so could not use, its adviseable to take a travel kettle as their is no electric kettle only a whistle kettle that never boils. tennis was available and crazy golf but again at a charge. this was a very relaxing holiday and i would reccommend it if you wanted to chill out, there was entertainment most nights that was okay but their is a great place called yumbo's were they have bars etc and many shops and places to dine including the hard rock caf'e which had live music and only cost 4 euros each way by taxi. i would return again as i had a great time and the bad points mentioned were minor things which were shadowed by the great weather, the lovely people we met, the relaxing beach and by seeing our children enjoying themselves and meeting other children and the playing in the pool for hours which was suprvised by a lifeguard.

just got back from cay beach and am quite impressed considering some of the reviews previously featured on this site.
yes the bungalows were a bit dated looking but there was more than enough room for a family of four and they were quite comfortable, my only disapointment was that there was only air conditioning in the bedroom where my children slept so we had to leave the windows open in the lounge area which was fine until a fueding family moved in next door for a week and woke us up with their drunken arguments at 3 and 4 in the morning, however had a word with ross the rep who in turn spoke to the family and this did the trick, thanks ross.
The pool was great and refreshing not cold, after all you want to cool off not take a bath!
by the way never mind the germans reserving sunbeds the english were worse putting their towels out through the night, shame on you! there were plenty sunbeds and plenty room in the pool, our 1st week there was a lot of spanish on holiday and the atmosphere poolside was great however the 2nd week was more brits and the kids took over the pool a bit with their water pistols ok if your in the water but not if your just on your way out for the evening fully dressed!
went on two excursions, souix city which was ok much preferred garbo's, we didn't upgrade to 'gold package' and unless your really bothered about tapas or extra champagne you wouldn't be missing out on anything, entertainment and meal was fantastic and were sat with another family of four and by the end of it we were dancing on our seats much to our childrens embarrassment eh samantha!
we also went to las palmas twice the bus fare for the four of us was 21 euros which is cheaper than going through thomsons, great place for shopping.
also got the bus to mogan market costing 14 euros for the four of us,great market but take a bottle of juice as when we got to the end of the market the only pub on that side of the market was really expensive 12 euros for 4 soft drinks, plenty other places to eat and drink at the start of the market,we also haggled with the traders and did quite well.
got taxi's to playa des ingles and meloneras.
meloneras is a really good place to go for something to eat in the evenings try 'grand italia' or chino canton are really good but you won't go wrong with any of the restaurants along the front but if you arrive after 8pm be prepared to wait for a table at grand italia.
Meloneras is also the place to go if you want to shop for designer clothes.shops include lacoste and boss.
overall had a fantastic holiday and would definitely revist the same area and the cay beach bungalows

Got back from the Cay Beach Bungalows...

Got back from the Cay Beach Bungalows this morning. Arrived late at night, receptionist spoke quite good English and was helpful. The pool was of a very good size, nice and big although same depth all way round. Temperature of the pool was cold but once in for a few mins you soon get used to it. Plenty of sunbeds although could do with a few new ones!
Pool bar was very expensive and the shop next door also expensive, however sells almost everything! The bungalows are small and basic but clean. Shower was a little cold trickle, until u bash it and get it working properly. Maids could have cleaned and changed the beds more often.
Location a bit out, closest place to walk about 10 mins away! Taxi's very cheap around 3-3.5 euros to playa de ingles where the nightlife was. Definately recommend the yumbo centre; shops, restaurants, arcades, bars. 'Cafe la Belle' and 'Rickys caberet show' definately the places to go, had a right laugh! Faro 2 shopping centre, a 10 min walk from the bungalows a very nice restaurant called the 'Dali' excellent food and nice waiters. Aqua land was very good, some good slides and some good things to do e.g the sea lions. A very expensive day out although well worth it!
Ross the rep very friendly and helpful, knows what hes talking about and recommends some good places to visit.
Most families and couples in the complex really nice and friendly. I would recommend the Cay Beach Bungalows to anyone and would return in the near future.

Just returned back from the Cay beach...
10 / 10
Jul 2008, Miss G Durham

Just returned back from the Cay beach bungalows this morning and it was a brilliant two weeks!
On arrival we were unsure what to expect as most reviews seemed bad, but when we'd spent a week there we realised some people must just like to moan as there were no problems with the place what so ever. It was no where near as bad as some people made it out to be.
We were self catering, but took lots of food with us to see us through the first week. The prices of food there werent great, SOME things were expensive where as other things weren't. Supermarket next door is obviously expensive, however you can get a taxi to a local spar supermarket (about 3 euros) and stock up on all food there as its cheaper. Pool bar is a total rip off for drinks, but so is every other resuataunt around. It was about 2 euros 80 for a fizzy drink, so we kept nipping to the supermarket next door to buy drinks, theyre 1/3 of the price! for example bottles of fizzy orange can be bought for 1 euro, and kids capri suns only 50 cents. Also a supermarket at faro 2 shopping center which was cheap and a short walk.
Loved the bungalows, people said they were small when they were not! we had a room for 4, but they slept 5, there are other rooms which contain two bedrooms aswell as a living space as we found out in the last week.people said kitchen cutlery was basic, but what else would you need apart from knives, forks, spoons, cups, bowls, plates, saucers, toaster, microwave, fridge & freezer, sieves, teapot along with sugar and milk pots? Bathroom was spacious and had enough room to get everyone washed and ready, however the hair dryer was poor and took ages to dry hair. Bedroom was big also, much more room than was needed! Air conditioning was only 6 euros a day, we didnt buy it but got it free as they had forgotten to turn it off from the previous people before us! But the windows are great for a night, you can leave them wide open, as there are shutters which have gaps in to let in air, however nothing else can get in except your cool air.
Pools were great! one was huge, plenty of room for everyone even with people playing their ball games aswell as people on inflatable beds and rings, and there was no fighting for sunbeds either. no matter what time of day you go down to the pool you are guaranteed sunbeds and lots of space! The large pool was abit cold, but arent most holiday pools? but you get used to the cold witihin minutes and warm back up again. Water polo was played every day from 11-12 o'clock. and again in the afternoon sometimes when people asked to play it again. the other pool was great aswell, it's heated in winter but it was alot warmer when we were there aswell! its not as big, but it's great, not many people in it usually which is good also. it has a jacuzzi and hydro beds, which didnt work, the jacuzzi did however but we couldnt work out how to turn it on. people have made big deals out of these two things not working in their reviews, however who really booked thase bungalows just for them? it's abit pathetic if someones holiday is ruined because these weren't working and making the place sound bad because of it.
Reception staff and maintenance were also great, you just had to phone up with a problem and they'd send someone to fix it straight away. Maids were great too, they came in to the room every day and cleaned the floor and bathroom, swept outside, changed sheets and towels 2-3 times a week and even do washing up for you if you've left out anything dirty.
Trips, went on two. sioux city, it was pricey but worth it! It was cheaper booking it through thompsons also, otherwise it would have been another 10euros each to get in when you got there as it was 50euros per adult to get in if you just turned up at the place. it was a great night out, deffo worth the money. there was a free bar all night, an old western town, lots to do, brilliant BBQ with lots of food, wine and fizzy drinks, and a show at the end of the night, along with a live western singer in the saloon bar and line dancing.
Also we went on a free trip, a blanket trip to the caves. it was very interesting and a good half a day out. you didnt have to spend a single penny if you didnt want too. however there was a presentation for about 45 mins to do with a range of bed products, which looked great but were expensive, but you were not hassled to buy any of these at all. if you didnt want any you walked out at the end, and if you wanted some, you had to go find the salesman to talk to. we were then taken to some caves, in which people still lived which was interesting. we also got a tapas dinner there for 6 euros per person.
Ross, the rep was very helpful and a lovely person. he was always around and could always be found. Yes..his welcome speech was boring and repeated alot, 3 times a week at 11am..but this was only because it's done outside in the sunshine which was much better than being crammed in to a hot room, there are also free drinks of sangria and orange at the end of it. It wasnt a big deal to me and i didnt find it annoying. Obviously he has to give the same speech to all new arrivals otherwise it wouldnt have been fair! So i dont know why people complain! also, he does mention alot about trips thompsons have which most poeple thought was bad, however most families want plenty to do and him giving all the information gave people the oppertunity to do something exciting and different on their holiday rather than sit around all day.
The area was lovely, not alot to do but it was still great.
Taxis, you could get them to anywhere, usually between 2-3 euros! that is unless you are greedy and tight with money and cannot spare a few euros now and then.
Faro 2 center was literally 10 minutes away to walk, there was a long way and a short way to get there, ask ross about the shorter way! Theres shops and resuaraunts there which are cheap enough, apart from drinks which were expensive everywhere. The bars were great and stayed open till 3 in the morning! they werent as expensive for drinks, it was always fizzy drinks that were expensive, alcohol was cheaper! one bar especially, banana tropical bar was brilliant! the waiters are great and lovely to everyone, they're lively and it's also a great place for children to go. one waiter sergio was great he made flowers out of napkins for the children and taught people card tricks and was a good laugh. we went there every night for drinks after our meal.
it was a great holiday and we all enjoyed it and would deffinatly go back next year!
But...it's cheaper to book direct from the hotel and not through thompsons, we asked at reception and it's 66euros a night per room! not person.. to stay there in a room which sleeps 5, or for a two bedroomed room with sleeping space also in the living room its 82 euros a night per room.
