We stayed at this hotel for a Tinsel and Turkey weekend and weren’t expecting the Ritz as the price reflected this. The hotel itself is a little dated but had a warm feeling and the welcome was good. Our main issue was the food, this was very disappointing, and as I said... more

Having just returned from this hotel we certainly would not recommend it. The hotel is very tired, very frugal and the food left a lot to be desired.

good value for money
The carlton hotel is well presented and clean and tidy. We found the room to be a fair size the bed comfortable. We had a third floor balcony room with sea views; chambermaid services every morning and new towels every day. The food was of a very good standard with a good choice of menu. We found all the staff to be very helpful polite and tidy. The entertainment was good and enjoyable, overall we found our holiday good value for money The Carlton Hotel could easy get a three star rating compared to some of the hotels we have stayed in on the island.
Clean & Tidy with excellent staff
We went on holiday to the Isle of wight staying at the Carlton Hotel, (booked before looking at reviews on this site) on arrival we were served with tea & coffee which was a really nice start to our stay. Our rooms were very clean and tidy and the food at the hotel was also very good. The staff were excellent and we would reccomend this hotel to any of our friends to visit, we had a really good time. The only negative we could see was that it could do with a lick of paint.
Super weekend at a dump of a hotel
My wife and i stayed for a long weekend at the Carlton Hotel in Sandown we had a super weekend because of the family and friends we spent the time with but this hotel could only be discribed as a dump the rooms were dirty, thick with dust on every surface and a smelly grimey unclean toilet /shower room. The staff in the hotel in general were very good all apart from the general manager who really could not cope with the level of complaints and became rude and obnoxious and showed no level of customer service. I would urge everybody to stay away from this poor excuse of a hotel and would not return even if it was for free.
PLEASANTLY PLEASED
My wife and I have just returned from a weekend break at the Carlton Hotel in Sandown On The Isle Of Wight. We had read the reviews prior to using the hotel and it would be fair to say that some are very good but some paint the hotel in a very poor light. We stayed as part of a large group celebration of around 150 people and must therefore have taken over most of the hotel. Our experiance of the stay I can honestly say was a pleasant one. Value for money is key to this hotel as some of the rooms are a little dirty and tired. However the beds were very clean and reasonably comfatable. The staff were helpfull when given to opportunity and tried very hard to please. The location of the hotel is very good and is placed no more than 10 meters from a very nice and sandy beach. The local shops and amusments are also on hand. The bar area and dining areas of the hotel are also very nice with well trained staff.
Much better than expected!
Right on seafront we had top floor room, with balcony. Panoramic views over bay, and could hear waves all night. Room was clean, not especially homely, but perfectly adequate. Breakfast very ordinary, but again perfectly adequate. Outside hotel looks tired and lacked character. Inside it was Ok, but for the money, was good value, and perhaps one of the best locations in Sandown. Felt quite young, as average age of guests was nearly 90yrs. Would definitely stay again!
Not for us!
We have just come back from a long weekend at the Carlton. We had a 3rd floor room with balcony.( The balcony being the best bit ) The room was rather worn to say the least. I don't usually go for the evening meal option as the IOW has lots of good places to eat but it was a deal with ferry thrown in. Dinner was between 6 and 7 and as we tend not to eat till 7.30ish I asked if by getting down at 6.50 would still be ok and was told at reception this would be fine. When in the restaurant, the waitress asked what starter we wanted but first told us in a charmless manner that the "fishcakes are burnt and were sent back" Hmm... The alternative was a prawn salad which consisted of a bit of lettuce and 4 prawns in lashings of mayo. We asked if we could order a drink and was told the 'wine waiter only comes round at the beggining of service. My husband went to the bar and the waitress delivered our main meal, plonking it on the table with the words " you were lucky - the chefs closing the kitchen!. One slice of turkey and burnt roast potatoes with stewed veg. Somehow we didn't feel lucky. We went along the road to a very nice restaurant and didn't bother again. The evening singer that night was quite good but it went downhill after that with the last night's singer not turning up. This a coaching hotel and I accept meals etc are not going to be of the standard of some. However, even though we were not on a tour we have been on a number of coach holidays in this country and abroad and I can honestly say the food has always been far better than this hotel. I think it's a shame as the hotel is in such a prime position and could be very good but they need to up their game to make it work. I would never recommend it as it is now. Sorry.
Overall very poor, worst hotel every stayed at
Apart from close location to beach, this hotel was very disappointing. Rooms tatty, hole in floor under carpet. Some guests couldn't sit on toilet straight as sink was over the bowl. Many things wrong with rooms, some very, very small, not enough room to move around bed!. Curtain rail broken, ceiling light rusty. Toilet seat loose. Shower/bath taps not fully functional and shower flooded bathroom and water cistern leaked onto floor. Patio door on balcony unlockable. Blankets very old and well used. Brown water marks on ceiling. TV only partially working and very old and broken legs. Stool/cupboard very tatty with torn fabric. Headboards torn/split, not clean and worn shiny. In conservatory area, armchair backs were very badly marked, cushions old, marked and some split. Double glazing 'blown' condensation in between panels. Fan light handles either broken or missing. The food was very poor, with very small helpings. Staff were extremely busy with too many tables to look after, therefore service was not good. Milk jug had mould round the top, tea and coffee pots very old. No table cloths and paper serviettes. Tables also very small, i.e. 4 on table that would be more suitable for 2. Tables near fire exit door were covered in sand which presumably had blown in, and there were cigarette ends on floor. Restaurant was very hot, fire door could not be left open to let air in as table right next to it and was draughty. The smell of cooking fat permeated throughout the hotel. Only 1 lift working. Would never recommend this hotel to anyone, definitely the worst we have stayed in.
OK
We travelled on a coach tour and our arrival was met by the manager who showed us into the hotel where tea and coffee was waiting for us. A very nice touch. Our suitcases where delivered to our rooms. Our room was on the top floor and we had a balcony with fantastic views. The room was quite clean. I've been in worse. all in all we were very pleased. That is until we went down for our evening meal. We were the first into the dining room but some managed to be last to be served. When we finally got served the waitress brought us Roast beef in gravy. She said the roast potatoes would be a few minutes. So when they arrived the beef was cold. But to top it all the roast potaoes were still frozen in the middle so they went well with the beef. I immediately went to see the manager who couldnt be more sorry and he promised it wouldnt happen again. The rest of the meal was washed out and boring too. The sprouts looked like they had been mashed and to sum it up it was appauling. I've never known anyone not be able to cook frozen veg. The breakfast was nothing to write home about either. If your looking for a hotel with good food then I suggest you go somewhere else. The hotel was ok though and most of the staff were friendly apart from the girl that snapped at me when I complained about the roast potatoes. Sandown is a lovely place and the beaches are lovely. I dont know if I would stop at the Carlton hotel again though!
Appalling service
I booked to stay at this hotel, and received an email confirmation, but after waiting for over a week for telephone confirmation (which is apparently required) I called the hotel. Apparently someone had tried to call me (I was advised someone 'probably' tried to call) but did not receive any messages, apparently the room was no longer available, although it was at the time of the booking. I pointed out that I hadn't received very good service as the room was obviously available at the time of booking online, but because no one had called me the room had gone. The employee at the hotel was VERY rude and put the phone down on me. Completely unacceptable service.
