Beware

Nov 2011, Maggie

We stayed at this hotel for a Tinsel and Turkey weekend and weren’t expecting the Ritz as the price reflected this.
The hotel itself is a little dated but had a warm feeling and the welcome was good.
Our main issue was the food, this was very disappointing, and as I said we weren’t expecting The Ritz or gourmet food, but how hard is it to cook fresh vegetables that isn't boiled to mush or cook a piece of chicken that’s so dry you can hardly swallow it, as for the Turkey on what would be the "Christmas Day" this was thin slices of pre packed meat warmed up yuk, I could go on but hey lets tell you about breakfast.
Breakfast's if your not with a coach party "LOOK OUT" you must be down to the restaurant 08.30 Sharp or the tea and coffee is cold (as its put on the table whether your there or not) and the breakfast table that holds Grapefruit and a couple of cereals looks as if a bombs hit it (at no time were we offered the porridge or fruit juice). The cooked breakfast consists of " egg, scrambled or fried, bacon, sausage, hash brown and beans" what ever you do don’t ask for two eggs and bacon that’s not allowed or a full breakfast with out beans, One of my party asked for this as she has an allergy to beans only to find a couple of beans under the bacon so all they had done was scrape off the beans from a pre plated breakfast which obviously had been kept warming in a hot plate. When asking for more toast (we had one rack with 6 quarters for a table of 6 people) we were told sorry the toasters switched off.
My advice to anyone looking at staying here is "DONT" pay a little extra for another hotel "you know it makes sense".

I would not recomend this hotel or the tours, i have just came back and was very stressed,i had no heating in the room after complaining till the wensday, also went hungry 1 evening meal as i couldnt eat turkey and the cheff would not even do me a sandwich, a member of our party had 6 beans on her plate at breakfast, the lift holds 4 people and had to climb stairs and 1 day it wasnt working at all, i also paid £28 more than the others for a seaveiw and they got a seaveiw as well so if you do go dont book this option as chances are you will get one anyway.the tours consist of sitting on the coach for 5 hours out of seven and half, was given 1hour at the towns and one and half in a field with a cafe and wine testing, this was a waste of time and ached from the amount of hours we sat on the coach

Having read some very bad reports about this hotel, my partner and I arrived with much trepidation as to what we might experience during our 5 day (4 night) coaching holiday. Much to our relief, we found quite the opposite as soon as we walked in.
Arrival: Our bags were brought into the hotel by staff while we sat in the lounge for coffee. Check-in was simple, quick and efficient.
Room: We had booked a double room with balcony and sea-view.
Cleanliness: This was in a good state of decoration with a clean carpet throughout, except for a couple of minor blemishes.
Bedding. Clean and tidy with freshly laundered sheets and pillowcases. Mattress was clean and protected with a mattress protector. Spare blankets provided.
Storage. Plentiful. Modern matching clean units. A three-door floor to ceiling fitted wardrobe with internal shelf and plenty of coat hangars. Ample room inside robe to store empty suitcases etc. Fitted dressing unit with 8 good sized drawers. Two bedside units each with 3 drawers.
Amenities. TV. Tea/coffee making facility, direct dial telephone, chair, comprehensive information booklet.
Security. Main door locked securely. Access by swipe-card. Balcony French doors and windows secure when locked.
Noise. No bothersome noise. At night, the sound of gentle breaking waves on the golden sands below our balcony lulled one to sleep.
Overall. Clean, comfortable and tidy.
En-suite: Small, but adequate. W.C., hand basin and corner shower. Constant hot water, even at busy times of day. Towels and soap provided. Overall well cleaned daily and hygienic.
Dining: Very impressive speed of waiter service. Full English breakfast. Three-course dinner, with 3 choices per course. Excellent food with adequate portions.
Lounge: Comfortable sofas, armchairs and tables overlooking the sea. Large dance floor.
Overall: The Carlton does not profess to be a 5-star hotel. It is a holiday style hotel that offers excellent value for money. (One can easily pay more in some other accommodations for a lot less excellence). All staff very helpful, well presented and very courteous. The hotel is in the process of refurbishment, with more new beds and carpets arriving during our stay. Conversion to digital TV and flat screens are now being installed.
Some hotels on the island have lacked the initiative to invest in refurbishment, ultimately to their own cost of survival. These are being forced to shut down with bailiff in, fore-closure and boarded up as a consequence.
The Carlton clearly is making every effort to give excellent service, quality and value for money. WE WOULD DEFINITELY STAY THERE AGAIN.

A Pleasant Holiday

I have just returned with other members of my family from a short stay holiday at the Carlton Hotel with 'Majestic'. We were very worried after reading some of the reviews regarding this hotel. However, we enjoyed our stay there with none of the problems that other people say they have had. We found the hotel to be clean and comfortable, the staff to be polite and friendly. My family had two rooms booked which were also clean and comfortable. The quality and choice of food (we were half board), was in our opinion very good and we enjoyed the evening entertainment provided. The hotel is perfectly placed with the beach in front and the main street behind.

Having just returned from this hotel we certainly would not recommend it. The hotel is very tired, very frugal and the food left a lot to be desired.

Worst Hotel Ever

I have stayed in many hotels over the years and this one is way down at the bottom of the heap. The rooms were just about ok except the bathing facilities. Bath with overhead shower facility. Could not fill the bath except through the shower head and water either boiling or cold. Beds not very comfortable. Balcony door needed dinamite to open and shut it. Food was as previously stated. Shopping done in Icelands as everything frozen. No need of a Chef as anyone can heat something from a packet. Even then it wasn't cooked properly or even hot some of the time when you got it. 6 out of 17 in group refused to eat evening meal in hotel after first experience. Staff friendly enough but understaffed. Needs a miracle to put right and would never stay there again.

Stayed here 4th-8th June 2010 with Majestic coach co.
Hotel in a prime position on the seafront but looks can be deceptive.
Food appalling school dinner standard, no jugs of water on the tables, conveyor-belt service by waiting staff doing their best though clearly understaffed.
''Enjoy your meal'' at each sitting - a pointless PR exercise with such poor quality food and cooking - states 1st -class cuisine on website!!
Rooms stained and tired in appearance, basic cleanliness with no frills whatsoever.
Shouldnt be allowed in this day and age.
