Just got back from Playa Blanca a couple of days ago. This was a very nice apartment to stay at whilst on holiday with my girlfriend. Its a bit more quiet than what it would be in the summer time but still the Sun Royal is a nice place to stay! the rooms have all the things you need and the facilities on the hotel grounds are good also. I reccomend this hotel to anyone who wants a relaxing holiday in the winter sun. My Rating: 7 out of 10

Nice resort - shame about the room

Just back from a first time visit to Lanzarote - a nice wee island. Sun Royal was smartly-kept and very clean if basic. Our only complaint was that in a half empty complex our room was north facing and therefore got no sun at all - a shame as we like to sit on a balcony and watch the sun go down with a large G&T in hand. Friendly staff helped our problem with the safe, lights and calling us a taxi when our aurport transfer failed to turn up. As we were self-catering we didn't use the restaurant or cafe. The resort is nice - the old part has an original feel to it - and the marina is very new and very hip. Restaurants are a bit more expensive, but worth it. We ate at the Casa Roja (good if a little dear) el Mano (good food but the surliest waiters outside of Paris) il Commendatore (the best with fabulous veal and steaks on the stone) Lani's which became a firm favourite mainly because of the waiters and the H U G E measures of whisky and Tia Maria! Food was good too, certainly a varied menu and very popular with kids. We also ate in the old part at Brisa Marine and the mussels and king prawns were fabulous. The long promenade makes for a great walk. Papagayo beach was brilliant, as was the longer walk (two and a bit hours there and back) to the lighthouse at the other end. We walked every day and took one of the all-island tours (55 euros each but not bad for an all day excursion) Would we go back? Not in November. Temperatures during the day were great - 24degrees and with a cooling breeze, but it got cold at night so a fleece was necessary. We would be tempted back a little earlier in the year and Playa Blanca would be ideal.

Had a fantastic holiday. Would recommend the Sun Royal Apartments, basic but very clean, maid came in every other day and sheets changed 3 times in 10 days and towels changed every time she came to clean. Pool area and reception kept very clean and no problem getting sun beds even though it was peak season, everyone very friendly. There were a lot more Spanish than English staying there but every effort was made to include English guests. The reps for the childrens club made every effort to speak English and include all children. My children aged 9 and 15 had a great time and have asked to go back next year which in fact we most certainly will. It is a short walk to the beach and restaurants at Playa Blanca offering a wide range of food, would recommend the Tex Mex and Jumbo the chinese. We did not eat at the hotel so cannot offer any comment although other English guests recommended it. The trips were a bit on the pricey side so take extra money if you want to do these, would definately recommend the Grand Tour as you get good value for money and includes a camel ride which is a must if you have kids, would also recommend the submarine dive.

Returned today from the Sun Royal...

Returned today from the Sun Royal (wife, 2 kids and I) and what can I say - fantastic holiday. The Apartments are fine, clean and with every amenity required. Maria, our cleaner was excellent and towels regularly changed. There were plenty of English families there but having said that the Spanish were very friendly. The Kids club is Spanish run but did everything to include the English kids - no complaints at all. The supermarket onsite is well stocked.
Playa Blanca itself is great for a relaxing holiday - good clean beach, lovely new Marina and established 'old' town.
We will be returning to the Sun Royal and Playa Blanca.

Have just got back from playa blanca...

Have just got back from playa blanca where me my 8 year old daughter my sister and her 7 year old daughter spent 11 nights. I have to say the hotel was very clean as was playa blanca. Had really hot weather our whole stay[don't be fooled by the very strong winds you still need to slap on the sun cream]. Our sheets were changed maybe once while we were there and the towels every couple of days. Wasn't much to do in the hotel unless you were spanish. All the fun activities were on a noticeboard only in spanish, so the children couldn't mix in if they wanted to. Couldn't fault our tour guide Carly as she was always there if you was needed. We went to the restaurant on our second night there and was very dissappointed. The food was awful. Apparently we were told by another english family the rest of the time the food was fine. We spent most of our time at the main part of playa blanca , where we had our evening meals. Couldn't fault the food. as every restaurant we ate in was great. You've got to try Jumbo's chinese, an Italian restaurant called Contins and a Tex Mex place a little further up. If you are looking for a lot of night life then this isn't the place for you.[you'd probably be better off in somewhere like playa de carmen]. This is a nice family holiday, but teenagers would find it boring. It was ok for my daughters age as she is happy with the beach and the 2 swimming pools at our hotel. Went to 2 excursions whole we were there. One to Rancho Texas Park which the kids loved, and also to Costa Teguise market, which we needed more time at. as it doesn't give you long to cover the whole market. The only downside about self-catering was the colossal prices at the local supermarkets. The local Netto's[about 5-10 minutes walk from the hotel] was charging 2-3 euros for a loaf of bread [and that's an ok loaf]. We all thoroughly enjoyed our holiday, found it very relaxing, and it was lovely overlooking the sea as we were eating our evening meal. The kids didn't want to come home and my daughter wanted to bring the swimming pool home with her! Would recommend it, and would definately go back again.

This hotel was for spanish guests...
4 / 10
Aug 2008, Mr Pm Mccormack

This hotel was for spanish guests using the company Travelplan. Thomson only gets 12% of the rooms.
BE AWARE THAT MEANS ONLY A COUPLE OF ENGLISH FAMILES
Everything is done for the spanish hoilday makers including kids club run by travelplan.
We booked the kids club as part of the hoilday we didn't pay for a spanish run one where the kids don't have an idea what the reps or kids say.
We had room 603 which was shabby and dirty including,
Sofa bed coming apart.
Gouge out of a unit
Bathroom door would not lock infact if you shut it you couldn't open it.
4 tiles were missing of wall
Waste water came through a waste pipe on floor twice and needed an engineer out.
Walls stained.
Shower was as good as useless
coffee table heat stained all over.
Front door would not shut unless locked.
Most of the sunbeds were broken only towards second week did they bring some more and added some shades only three when we arrived.
The spanish guests took over the place and their kids were very rough with the english children infact several familes had to make the problem know but as they were spanish and staff spanish this ment a big laugh and nothing done.
We have being made aware that 7 reps have gone through this hotel and the major complaints all the english guests have is ,
No English kids club.
No evening entertainment in english.
This was a real let down by THOMSON they knew what we were going to get but didn't tell us.
We only had fun outside of the hotel as we used another one not conected to the SUN GROUP WHO OWN BOTH SUN ROYAL AND SUN PARK(SISTER HOTEL)NEXT DOOR.
We had lovely weather and some good meals out but this was all runied by the SUN ROYAL HOTEL..
PLEASE THINK TWICE BEFORE BOOKING THIS HOTEL.
I went by what other hoilday makers had written I don't know what hotel they were at but this is how it is. Many familes we meet including a THOMSON TRAVEL AGENT WERE DISGUSTED BY THE HOTEL AND WILL BE TAKING FURTHER ACTION ON THEIR RETURN.
If I had one word to say it would be DONT.

Have just come back from 11 nights in...

Have just come back from 11 nights in Sun Royal Apartments. Went with my daughter who is 7, my niece 8 and my sister. The apartments are very clean as too is the hotel. Cleaned and changed towels every 2 days. Beds changed once. Walk to beach, town centre and the Marina all pleasant 10-15 mins walk. Everywhere is absolutely spotlessly clean and children made a fuss of wherever we went. Went to Rancho Texas Park in the day and kids loved it, would recommend, worth the money. Also went to Teguise Market, the only downside was not long enough on the excursion, all a bit rushed, didn't have time to take in the town of Teguise only enough to shop at market. Very relaxing holiday. All the restaurants we ate in along main strip of Playa Blanca sea front had lovely meals and not too expensive. Kids loved making a fuss of the parrots. Went to Jumbos chinese twice, had lovely Italian, Spanish, Tex Mex - every taste bud is catered for, they even have a Burger King. The market in the Marina is on Wednesday and Saturday mornings and well worth the visit. Supermarkets all rather expensive, approx 3 Euros for a decent loaf of bread. The only downside we would say is the Hotel caters mainly for the Spanish Tour operator. All entertainment was run by them including the kids club. There were 2 pools and the warm one was taken over by them also so English tend to sit round the cold pool. No fault with our Thomson rep Karli, she was lovely and really helpful but Thomson need to put entertainment on for the kids and the bar in the evenings as everything was in Spanish so our kids could not join in. We had to go into town in the evenings and went to Paddy Mac's Irish pub one night and they had an Elvis impersonator on and even the kids had a great night.
Overall would recommend the hotel and Playa Blanca for anyone who does not want raving night life - it suited us as the children are young and plenty to do in town but would suggest if you were looking to stay at the hotel for all of your entertainment and meals you may be disappointed. We ate in the restaurant at the hotel 1 evening and was not treated very nicely as we were not full/half board although we were happy to pay 12 Euros per head for the buffet - which was awful (maybe just chose the wrong night as met a family who were half board and they said that was the only night they didn't enjoy it as everything else was fine.) Needless to say we did not go back.
Feel Thomson need to consider doing more for their customers.
However, we had a thoroughly good time and would definately go back again - kids did not want to come home.

Been back from Lanzarote nearly two...

Been back from Lanzarote nearly two weeks now....stayed at Sun Royal. What can I say...it was great. The complex itself was kept very clean and tidy, the apartments were nice, did their job and were clean. The towels were changed every couple of days and our beds were changed twice I think, in the 10 days that we were there. The supermarket on site was good and the staff very friendly.
It was about a 15-20 minute pleasant walk to the main part of Playa Blanca and the same to the Rubicon Marina. (there was a good supermarket there, quite cheap Maxi Coop).
I would definately recommend Tipico Canario Restaurant in Playa Blanca for a meal ----the staff and the food are A1! It is on the main promenade front, just around the corner after Playa Dorada beach.
Roll on next year when we are able to return again!!!!

Have just returned from Sun Royal and...
10 / 10
Jun 2008, Mr P Herrington

Have just returned from Sun Royal and really can't find fault with it. Apartments are the cleanest I have ever stayed in and the bedding and towels were changed 8 out of the 10 days.
The top pool is heated via some kind of solar panels in the pool and it gets really nice and warm, especially in the afternoon but it is NEVER cold. The bottom pool is but this is, I think, mainly for those who just want to sunbathe, the top pool is there to be used. Unlike other places I have been, the sunloungers are not all towelled up by 7 a.m. and we got to the pool around 10ish and always managed to get 4 together so it is not a problem.
Playa Blanca itself is lovely and there are many great places to eat and is only a 10 minute flat walk along the promenade. Jumbo's chinese is a must, as is Pizzeria Playa Blanca, which piled us with honey rum (gorgeous) on the house at the end of our meal!
All the staff on site were helpful and friendly and not in your face at all. The inclusive offer is worth taking, at least for one day, at 22 euros adults and 11 for kids. Couldn't do it every day as would have come home a couple of stone heavier.
Maybe the only downside was in the Thomson brochure it was advertised as a Kidzone resort but there were no Thomson reps for the kids. It is a Travelplan resort (Spanish) but they speak good English and were fantastic with our 2 girls (11 and 10) and they loved it when they got to know what was going on and when.
Would thoroughly recommend this if you wanted a nice peaceful and relaxing break where the kids have entertainment laid on. Can get a bit breezy but don't be fooled and make sure you slap on the sun lotion as you will get burnt without knowing it.
Go and enjoy.

Resort very clean and rooms cleaned...
10 / 10
May 2008, Mr I Smith

Resort very clean and rooms cleaned at least 3 times a week.
Staff very friendly and the Hotel Kids club welcomed English kids with open arms (although Thomsons rep told us it was Spanish only).
Two pools - one freezing so sun worshipers stayed round that one while the other was climatised and had most people round (and the kids club)
Playa Blanca was a short walk away with loads of places to eat (most were cheap) and places to shop.
Just watch that wind as it feels nice and cool but all the while you are burning as I found out to my shoulders expense.
That good we've booked to go next year already.

Bad points - Pool and Sea were ICE...

Apr 2008, Mr P Potter

1 reader found this review helpful

Bad points
- Pool and Sea were ICE cold (Not enjoyable).
- Far too windy (forever blinded by sand and unable to read properly)
- Food was horrible in most places and far too expensive for what you get.
- Walk to the beach is down hill - So up hill coming home.
- Never change the bedding all holiday.
Good points
- People dont really hassle you to go in shops or resterants.
- Walk to the beach although down hill is only 10 minutes.
- Mollies Irish Bar does a fantastic sunday dinner and breakfast.
- Has a Burger King which makes up for cr*p food elsewhere (but you can't have one of these every day. lol.)
- Fresh towels every day, made the bed and cleaned up.
- Sun Royal has an internet cafe (although only 10mins for 1 euro)
- Shop in the complex with Friendly staff.
- Squash court and Sauna in the complex
Special Note -
You can use the hotel next door which has a pool which is quite shallow and shaded from the wind. We only found this out on the last day. The partner hotel also has a Tennis court, Volley Ball court and Crazy golf.
